Windows Vista With Aero

Wed Nov 15, 2006 12:59 am

Hey quick question to all ye techies; I've heard many different things about the Windows Vista Home Premium with Aero on it, and what graphics cards are needed, etc.

So to those of you who have actually installed Vista, or are more in the know than I am, would an Intel GMA 950 do the trick to run vista with the aero interface? I'm thinking about buying a laptop, but adding a discrete video card would jack the price up a bit. If a GMA 950 wouldn't do the trick, would a geforce or ati mobile card with 256mb memory work? I'm looking at one of the mid-range Dell laptops, and am not sure which card to get.

(Please no "buy a Mac instead of vista" posts  Wink)

Thanks!

P.S. I just joined A.net today, after 2 years of lurking, and this is first post.

It worked fine for me on an Intel Mac Mini with GMA950 graphics and RC1 of Vista, but dont expect miracles  Smile

Anything better would be fine.

Well, thats good news! I might just go ahead and get a better card anyways...

Thanks for the input

Or if you're like me, you just use Stardock's WindowsBlinds and make Windows XP look like Vista (or even Mac OSX).

Seriously, on MS' website there is a Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor that scans your computer and determines if and what edition of Vista your computer can run. My Acer Tablet PC w/nVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 can run Vista with Aero, but not my 4-year old desktop, with an nVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200.

That will get you where you need.

Personally I have seen the demos for aero and wonder what the hype is about. I'm happy I got a relatively stable OS that's script/virus resistent at this point in time.

Pretty much anything looks better than Windows XP's Luna (Fisher Price) blue theme. Except the green version.  yuck

The PC that I have Vista RC1 installed on has a 64MB GeForce4 MX440 graphics card. The Upgrade Advisor rates it a "1" for graphics, so I only get the basic Vista theme rather than the fancy Aero. And it still looks way better than XP.
