I Think I Need To Whack My Fish

Wed Nov 15, 2006 10:19 am

I've had a fishtank for over a year now. One of my original fish purchases was a scissortail who was at least 2 and half times bigger than any other fish I bought. I have a small tank, only 10 gallons, and I usually kept 4 or 5 fish at a time. The rest of the fish have had an average life span of only 3-4 months.

Well, now all the other fish have died, and just the scissortail remains. I can't prove it, but I suspect this guy has eaten a couple of the smaller fish over time, and I'm very damn sure he has at least hindered the eating habits of the others. I was very good about putting food in the tank on a daily basis. I've decided I won't get any more fish until the scissortail dies.

I'm not terribly fond of the idea of keeping the tank going just for him, especially since I've marked him for termination. The tank is also due for a good thorough cleaning, new rocks, full water change, and sterilization of the glass. I kinda wish somebody would come in and whack him - perhaps do it while he's eating a plate of spaghetti like in the mafia movies. I really don't have the heart to kill him myself, but I feel like it's time for an ending. I'm putting a contract out on my fish. Can anyone recommend the best way to resolve my dilemma?

I smell a fish supper coming up Big grin

However, ask around, I'm sure there is somebody who would love to be donated a fish. Just because this one is doing what comes naturally to it, i.e. eating other fish, doesn't mean he should be killed for it, joking aside I am an animal lover and find it a little harsh just to kill the poor thing. Somebody will want him (other than the cat Wink )

Perhaps bring him to the local aquarium supply shop. They may take him off your hands and might even offer you a discount on new fish.
You know the gear is up and locked when it takes full throttle to taxi to the terminal.

I was not aware of that possibility.

I realize that but I don't know anyone who has a fish tank large enough for this fish.

If you pay for my transportation and buy me a 12 pack of Bud I'll whack the fish for you. Just leave the house, when you come back in, it'll be gone, you don't even have to know how I dispose of it.

I have about 15 bottles of Bud in the fridge right now - but a $500 ticket from YYZ to LAS for a $3 fish? We'll have to negotiate further.

Not wanting to sound rude to old people, but you could try a local retirement home, they always seem to have a huge tank for the residents to pass time by watching the fish go around Smile

I'm sorry. How about you accidentally fill the fish tank with beer instead of water.

Better yet put some speed in the water.

Well, now all the other fish have died, and just the scissortail remains.

It depends on what fish you had in your tank. Scissortails (Rasbora Trilineata) are a fork-finned fish, so they are faster than fan-tailed fish; because of that, the fork-tailed able to hog the food. Also, the Rasbora are very hardy, so it is possible that something is wrong with your tank, and less less tolerable fish simply croaked.

Which leads me to this:

How often do you clean your tank? The carbon filter should be changed every 2-4 weeks, and the gravel vacuumed and water partially changed every 2 weeks.

What to do? a)Clean the tank and filter more often, b)Put only fork-tails in the tank of the same aggressiveness, c)check the Rasbora for any abnormailities (like Cottonmouth, Ick, etc.), or d)eliminate the Rasbora

How do I know this? I used to work the fish department at a pet store for several years-while I was in high school.

Why kill a fish with Bud when Foster's is perfectly toxic?  Wink (Actually, I like Foster's)

Get him on a plane to KSFB, I'll adopt him into my 20 gallon tank... If you are serious about getting rid of him humanely send me an IM.

Firstly, I respectfully insist that you donate this fish to another home. Visit your local fish store. If it's a privately owned store, they will likely give you credit for it, which can be applied to other fish and accessories.

If you must kill the fish, put it into a disposable cup, with water from the tank. Then, place the cup in the freezer. The fish will not feel a thing, and be dead within minutes. That is the most humane thing you can do.

I've practiced aquaria for over twenty years now, and almost have a B.S. in marine biology. If you have any more questions, shoot me an email.

Plugin your toaster and throw it in the tank. I bet that would make quite a show.

Great. A.netters are so bored, they're giving hand jobs to fish...

I, too, have a fish that won't die. Had a yellow angel for nearly ten years. I keep waiting for him/her to punt the pail so I can go saltwater.

Or you could drastically alter (i.e. increase) the ammonia levels in the tank, but have fun cleaning the algae afterword.

Dude, it's a fish.
Take it out of the tank and watch it flop around for awhile.
Feed it to a stray cat
Stick it in someone's gas tank
Flush it

ect, ect, ect.
