Playstation 3 - Who's Lining Up?

Fri Nov 17, 2006 1:47 am

Yesterday I went to Fry's Electronics (big electronics warehouse in the US, for those of you who don't know), and there were 5 or 6 tents lined up outside the front. I asked one of them what they were lining up for, and he said for the PS3. It arrives tomorrow, and he's been at the front of the line since Monday. He's a nutter.

So, my question to you all is: what's the big freaking deal? It's a games console that will put you back $600. In 5 or 6 weeks, the big deal will be over, and anyone will be able to stroll in to Fry's or Best Buy or wherever, and get one. What is it about the "must be first to get it" mentality that forces people to deprive themselves of basic functions like a working bathroom and a shower for a week, just so they can get their hands on a a new toy?

Twofold:

1.) First of all, it won't just be "a few weeks". Sony has so underproduced that it will be MONTHS and MONTHS before they will be available at all.

2.) Profiteering. People will buy 5 or 6 of these at $500 and sell them on eBay for $2000 or $3000. Parents will do anything to give their little brats what they demand for the holidays.

That's what they said about PS2. That's what they said about Xbox360. Neither were true. I walked in to Best Buy three days after Christmas last year and purchased a 360 for regular price. I'm skeptical about Sony's underproduction claims - it's psychological marketing. In any case, it won't be "MONTHS and MONTHS".

Geez, people put too much value on these things, especially as Fry's have a strict one-per-person policy.

I was at Best Buy monday out of boredom and noticed they had a PS3 set up for demo already. There was absolutly no one there looking at it so I stood there and played it for about an hour. What an awesome system!! A guy that worked there came over and started talking to me and I asked why no body was here playing it and he said that people dont know they have it set up yet. I asked also if they have people lining up yet and he said yes....but they are throwing them out and only letting them there for up to 24 hours. I drove by the store today on my way home from the airport and there are about 10 tents lined up out front. Its cold and rainy here too, so that has to suck! Target store next door has about 3 tents out front. I thought it was an awesome system and would love to have one...but I will wait till they are in supply again till I get mine. Hmmm or I can dish out about $2000 on ebay to get one.......ok ill just wait....

All that trouble and hassle for a gaming divice. That's just crazy. I would buy anything if I had to wait for more than ten minutes max.

some people have addictions I guess??

Here in Atlanta, they had like 5-10 minutes on the evening news interviewing people about the PS3, why they were lined up, etc. Most stores have a one-per-person rule, except for one or two.

Currently, a guy I know is camped out in front of a store that does not limit the ammount you buy... he is first in line, and is planning on buy 4-5 of them, then re-sell on ebay for a 5,000 or 6,000 dollar profit.

Not bad if you ask me.

But still, why would people spend so much for a game system that they will be bored of in a year?

Same here. (Un)fortunately for me, Jr. only wants Legos and trains for Xmas. So his holiday train and BNSF engine are already waiting for him. Crap! Now I have to spend Xmas building Lego! (Very sarcastic)

BTW, Legoguy, it was mentioned some time ago that I have more Legos than you! I ran out of space to put them in.

Wrong, at least for the PS2 part. From what I was told from the higher ups as well as from Sony personel themself, Sony only had 550,000 units TOTAL throughout the states. Therefore, buying a PS2 for the next 2-3 months was next to impossible. The Xbox didn't have this problem since it doesn't have the fanbase that the Playstation has, although it is starting to get up there.

Advice: DO NOT BUY these first generation production models. The PS3 is still plagued with problems as were the first PS2s. I'll wait for a year before I buy mine, thanks. Plus it will be cheaper by then too.

EDIT: By the way, looks like they are doing it again:

All mine. But for this reason only:

I was forced to give up my collection at 14. Regretted that decision since then. Figured I would keep the collection when he feels he's too old for them. Will be waiting for grandkids or maybe we'll have enough to do some really cool stuff.

Restarted collection at 19. Kept it going. Jr. has destroyed a good chunk of it, but at 4, has started to finally bug me to fix all the models. There is no more space at home to actually place all the models I have.

Last year, he started on his trains, and after Xmas we will have this for the train side, all 9V.

1. High speed train
2. Santa Fe engine + 2 cars
3. BNSF
4. Holiday Train
5. Cargo train
6. Cargo crane
7. Train station
8. Intermodal set
9. Enough track to fill up his room

For Xmas, I will ask for additional Lego sorting boxes, the three I have are not close to enough. And these would be for the Legos that dont belong in my models.

If you only lived close enough, I would ask you to help me rebuild.

I literally just got back after having heard my brother is one of those people in a tent, waiting for tomorrow.

He's a serious gamer but he too knows the first few will be on bug-laden, so he's going to buy and then throw it on ebay to turn a profit.

Apparently though, some guy came up to him and offered $500 for his spot in line!! My brother declined. He's waiting for the $2000 offer.

Pretty interesting value structure we have here.

I was going to until I saw the tents in front of Best Buy.

I thought that 3AM on 11/17 would be "plenty early."

I have no interest in the console whatsoever. I just wanted the money.

Oh well.

Apparently he does. I just went back there to pick up some satellite speaker stands, and he was still there at the front of the line, offering me a hot dog (he had his BBQ going). The line now stretches around the back of the building, I estimate probably 150 or so tents and twice as many people. They had signs up advertising the package, and after the first 200 in the door, the others will be on a lottery basis - people given a ticket as they come in through the door, they present the ticket at the counter, and if their number matches one of the tickets on the PS3, they get it. If not, they must go to the back of the line.

It's totally ridiculous.

There are 9 Fry's stores in the area, and this one is the only selling the PS3. The other stores are referring all customers to this one, probably because it is a larger store with the capability to handle ultra-long lines and maintain business for those shopping for something other than a PS3. Perhaps that's why that have that many in stock.

I planned on lining up tonight around 10 and then selling it on eBay tomorrow morning, however, my friend that works at BestBuy said that people were there early Wednesday with tents, so, I sure wasn't doing that, so I guess I'm not.

I did it with the XBOX 360 and made a great profit, but I can't take time off of school to line up, so it's out for me this year. Too bad though, I loved getting suckers on eBay to pay up for the 360!

I keep wondering if I should change my flag. I was born and raised in Ecuador, still have plenty family there, but now live in SMF. 2 hrs from SFO and about 7 hrs from LAX. Plus other wonderful California spots.

But if you want to go to Ecuador, I might get my sister to give you a tour of the beach areas.

Thats the best apart about building lego. Building you're own stuff. I have only ever built 3 sets! and that was when I was 7 or 8. It's best to build you're own stuff.

I tried organising the pieces out into little clear bags, however it was ennoying opening and closing the bags. These days if I build something, I just hoke through the huge box and leave pieces that I think I might need littering the floor.

I'm seriously tempted to build a 747-8 now. I have had so many requests for a 747 since I showed a rough outline of one with lego bricks... and the 747 is starting to grow on me.

http://home.verizon.yahoo.com/

I just saw a CBS news video about violence in a Palmdale, CA Wal-Mart owing to confusion over getting in line for the PS3. This is LUNACY! Are some losers lives so barren this is all they have to live for? Don't get me wrong: I've long been a gaming aficionado for many years now but going to these extremes is just NUTS! No gizmo is worth going through this nonsense for, no matter how many gee-whiz bells & whistles it may have. These folks are just pathetic, like the ones who camped out weeks in advance for tickets to the mediocre last 3 Star Wars films. Has the need for immediate gratification become so overwhelming that some people have absolutely no self-control. To go through this AND pay top dollar for a likely to be bug-ridden console is INSANE and I hope someone makes a videodocumentary about these morons to put into the public domain to embarass them, that is if they have even a shred of self=respect. Rampant stupidity and irrationality are still prevalent in many gamers, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately, I re-started my collection with models, and have a hard time breaking those apart. But slowly have begun to collect free-style pieces, those are mostly the one that need classification. What I got were those containers that can be used to store screws, nuts, etc. with drawers of different sizes. They work great, but I need more of them.

Wrong. The PS2 didn't have production problems.. It was readily available just a couple weeks after roll-out..

The PS3 is extremely limited in the USA roll-out. There were alot of production problems, and the first editions of this system are full of bugs, that have to be fixed by an upgrade that I dont know when will come out... Each system is costing Sony over $1,000 to produce, and the're selling them for $600, for the more expensive version... Sony is losing alot of money on the system, but will make up for it with the game sales... Thats why they aren't too freaked out about not having so many available at roll-out. They know people will still buy the games in preperation for buying the new system.

Sony is releasing 400,000 PS3's to the USA and the Nintendo is releasing 4,000,000 Wi's. Personally I say, go for the Wi. Supposedly it will be cheaper and the games will be better. Also the launch of the PS3 has been delayed in Europe until March 2007.

RE: Playstation 3 - Who's Lining Up?

I'm heading out now! My small town has two stores that will be selling them today, but only one that has any sense. Target will get a few, and has been letting people line up and camp out over night. However, Fred Meyer-the lesser verseion of a WalMart, will be getting only four of them. Two of the 20 gig version, and 2 of the 60 gig versions. However, they did NOT let people camp out or line up. Rather, they are handing out numbers beginning in 20 minutes, and will hold a random drawing for who will get to buy them. To me, this makes the most sense. No one gets to be a retard and camp out. No one is left out for being smart enough not to spend 4 nights outside in a tent. So, I'm off to Fred Meyer! I'll let y'all know if I get one or not.

Yeah, dispatch called us last night and said Target had requested extra patrol throughout the night as people were camping in their parking lot..crazy.

Nothing beats this though:

1 Shot in Conn. Playstation Waiting Line

PUTNAM, Conn. Nov 17, 2006 (AP)— Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting to buy the new Playstation 3 gaming console early Friday and shot one who refused to give up the money, authorities said.

The two confronted 15 to 20 people who were in line outside a Wal-Mart store shortly after 3 a.m. and demanded money, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a spokesman for the state police. The new Sony consoles are selling for around $500 to $600.

"One of the patrons resisted. That patron was shot," Vance said.

Did that. Nowhere does that article cover the production cost of the unit

Sorry, did not know you were looking for unit cost production. Here you go:

Which option will Sony choose? Probably taking a bath on console sales. However, the company is going to end up hurting a lot more with each PS3 sale than Microsoft does with the Xbox 360. A recent analysis of the 360's component costs showed that Microsoft was taking a US$126 hit on each high-end Xbox 360 sold. With the Xbox 360's components estimated to cost US$525 (the Xenon CPU accounts for US$106 and the ATI GPU another US$141), Microsoft is able to keep the tag on the "good" Xbox 360 attractive to most gamers. If the figures for the PS3 components are accurate (and keep in mind that firms like Merrill Lynch make big bucks nailing this stuff for institutional investors), Sony would lose US$400 on each PS3 sold if it decides to meet the Xbox 360's price point. Taking a US$200 loss per unit would result with a US$599 price tag.

Ouch.

The high-end console looks very nice, and the combination of a wireless controller with motion-sensing ability, built-in WiFi support, and an HDMI port make it attractive if you can get past the sticker shock. Given the feature disparity between it and the US$500 console (akin to the Xbox 360 and the Core system), the cheaper console looks like a lemon from here solely due to the lack of an HDMI output. Either way, it's a lot of dough, and with the estimated price to manufacture each console as high as US$800, Sony could be taking a bath in excess of US$500 million on the first 4 million consoles out the door. Holy loss leaders, Batman!

After reading about the assorted violence and general mayhem that ensued over the launch of this pricey new console, I'm thoroughly disgusted and angry. I'm suggesting that Sony itself should perhaps be held accountable since they shipped FAR too few units to satisfy anticipated demand. They should have held off the launch until they'd ramped up production enough to reasonably approach meeting that demand. While few would have predicted the level of brutality we've read about here, it would be reasonable to expect that shipping far too low quantities of such a hotly anticipated product COULD lead to such problems. True, Microsoft did roughly the same thing with Xbox 360 last year without the same level of ugly consequences but the pieces were in place for it to have happened then, as well. Despite the fact that victims of losses due to PS3 fever helped set themselves up for robbery or assault due to their own irrational need to be first on the block to have this gee-whiz new gizmo, they should still sue Sony for culpability as well. If enough aim is taken at the corporation for making this, in my view, irresponsible move, maybe we'll have fewer such blunders in future. As sick and twisted as the losers who lined up for this thing are, Sony helped feed their perversion, baiting them with long-lead advertising then failing to ship enough units up front to quench most of the unbridled lust. Even if the lawsuits don't happen, I still hope Sony's P/R machine gets a serious blackeye from this mess and that they're forced to publicly apologize for this debacle, even though the discraceful behavior of some was something they couldn't fully have anticipated.  Angry

Personally anyone who's inline like an idiot deserves to be shot. Absolute idiots, to be standing inline, then to do it with CASH for a week outside. This just shows how absolutely stupid some people are.
