Who's At Work On New Yrs Eve?

Wed Nov 22, 2006 5:51 am

Just got my December roster, and found out I will have a night shift on the 31st of December. That means I don't need to celebrate with all the drunks and pyrotechnics freaks... HOORAY  Smile

Actually Im looking fwd for the night, there won't be many flights and we surely will have some nice meeting at the office. Hmmm.

Your feelings about Dec roster?
there is no coincidence

I now have my railway roster from December 06 thru to June 07  Smile

I can plan ahead, at least where the days off on the railway are concerned.

I'm not working NYE, but i've told them I can if they need me to  Smile

I will not be working. Our company usually takes 2 weeks off during the Christmas/New Year holidays.

On new years i will be doing my impersonation of Gkirk/Myt332.  Wink

I won't work on NYE, a friend and me will arrive back in DUS from Spain on December 31st at 8 PM-ish and I hope that we'll make it in time to the NYE party we're invited to.

Starting December 1st I'm on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so, there's a possibility I'll be working New Year's Eve, Christmas Day and every other holiday. All depends on the snow.

Im not sure yet, but looking at my rosta from a different point of view, I think it works out that I shall be on an early shift on New Years Eve and owed a day off on New years day. I dont care to be honest as im not a fan of celebrating New Years.. Last year I was fast asleep by 10pm..

Yep I'm working that day (being a Sunday, it's rather lucrative). Also working in the run-up to Christmas, worked Christmas Eve last year and for years worked Christmas Day and Boxing Day - the joys of being in the travel business.

I might do an hour or so's work on New Year's Eve, I suppose. I usually do a bit on Sundays.

Damn, I wish snow plowing paid better on Sunday's, holidays, weekends and all that. The Canadian Farmer's Act means I get paid the same no matter when I work. Although I go on salary starting December 1st, 50 hours a week, no matter how much I work, or how little, so I guess it could work out really well, of course I could get screwed.

If you worked for a government body, you could make a very nice income as a plow operator.

As for myself, I have the option of working or not, and at this point it looks as if I may. Its double time and a half and I want the money.

Very true, but I'm only 21, and I love the small company that I work for, only about 40 people in the summer and about 20 driving the plows in the winter. I like the small company feel, I've worked for the Town of Richmond Hill before and everything is so bureaucratic. This way we're all friends at this company, and in the end, the boss treats us really well.

Another problem is that I'm not licensed to drive the big plows, I use a Ford F-350 with a plow to do apartment building parking lots, I have a route of about 15 apartment buildings in Toronto and just keep going over the route until it stops snowing. All in all I can't complain, if it snows on New Year's and Christmas, that just part of the job.

I remember a couple of years I had the night shift on the 31st December (1800-0200) and the Morning shift on the 1st of January (0630-1530). Interesting experience I guess you could say, had the best sleep ever after I got back on New Years day  Wink

Thats whats most important. How I wish I could relate. I took the job that I have now because it pays well, not because I like doing it, and its starting to take a toll on me.

I am licenced to drive the big plows, although I never have. Just buses. If you are interested in getting the licence, there is a school up in the GTA that charges about $600. Although you would have to spend some money, the money that you make in return would likely be higher.

It's great to go to work knowing that no matter how much work we have to do in a given day it's always going to be fun because we're all friends.

While the money would be nice I'm not a landscaper for life, I'm finishing my degree in a few weeks and eventually would like to move on and become a police officer. I am however interested in getting the license just because it's good to have on the resume. I'll probably be landscaping for a few years to make some money before I go off and try to be a police officer, and even if I could make more money elsewhere, I am honestly willing to work for less money in an environment that I love. I won't be working on New Year's Eve - I'll be flying, LAX-BOS, when midnight hits. Of course, it's entirely possible I'll skip right over midnight and run straight on into Jan. 1, depending on when I hit the time zone line.

As of right now, I have New Year's Eve off, however, knowing how low I am on the totem pole, I'm worried that I'll get suckered into working that night, so I'm not making any plans yet.

Not I. As a state employee I get all state holidays off but with pay. We'll be a little busier in the next few weeks as divorcees who want to screw the other parent out of holiday visitation or demand holiday visitation file to make the changes. Sad to say but there are people who are low enough to do it. Then after the holidays, we'll get the folks who got beaten up over the holidays seeking restraining orders or bailing the other party out of jail.

I'm working 6AM on December 31 and also January 1st Sad

I'll just take a nap in the afternoon, then I'll try to go to bed before 0100 AM so I get at least a couple of hours of sleep.

In my street, square really, we're only 14 houses and everybody who's not on holiday comes outside at midnight to wish all the neighbours a happy new year and enjoy the fireworks  eyepopping

Sometimes we all get together at one of the houses afterwards but no way this year for me.

My kids roam the streets until early in the morning, I hope they're home before I go to work  Cool
