New 7 Wonders Of The World - Vote NOW!

Wed Nov 22, 2006 5:23 pm

Just in case you did not know, voting for the new seven wonders of the world is under way. You may choose 7 out of the 21 finalists:

Acropolis
Alhambra
Angkor Wat
Chichen Itza
Christ Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro
Colosseum in Rome
Easter Island Statues
Eiffel Tower
Great Wall
Hagia Sophia
Kiyomizu Temple
Kremlin / St. Basil
Machu Picchu
Neuschwanstein Castle
Petra
Pyramids of Giza
Statue of Liberty
Stonehenge
Sydney Opera House
Taj Mahal
Timbuktu

http://www.new7wonders.com

I think it's an interesting and excellent idea although I find the selection of finalists somewhat odd.
Some "new" wonders often predate those "classic" wonders of the Ancient World (Stonehenge, Chichen Itza), some were already among the ancient wonders (Pyramids)
And some just desperately smell with political correctness (Kremlin, Statue of Liberty).
Where are those REAL wonders like the Panama Canal, Channel Tunnel, Itaipú dam, Golden Gate or Firth of Forth bridge, etc.???

I thought by "wonder" they mean something that we're still not sure how it was constructed/completed with the materials/technology at the time they were built.

Obviously this is not the case with the Kremlin/Statue of Liberty or some of those mentioned by L410Turbolet.

My personal 7 wonders of the world:

1.Great wall: no explanation needed
2.Taj Mahal: the most beautiful building I ever visited, no photo of it comes close
3.Gizah plateau
4.Chichén Itzá
5.Angkor wat:Heared so many good things about it that I just must see it 1 day.
6.Moon Landing (saturn project): Men at it's best, never equalled until today.
I know it isn't in the list but it just belongs there.
7.Japanes railroad network (metro, Shinkansen, etc): If you ever used it you'll know what I mean and why I consider it a wonder of the world

And what is so mysterious about the Colosseum?

Same thing that is mysterious about the Acropolis and the Parthenon, amazing architecture for their time, no mortar to speak of, just stone . . . .

Ok, it makes sense to me.
Although I would argue that at least Petra, Angkor Wat and
Chichen Itza are similar impressive.

Edit to add the Great Wall - impressive logistics!

I see your point.

When i read "wonder" and put it together with the above structures my definition is... "amazement" and "curiosity".

 twocents

anyways....

And the Great Wall of China as well . . . .

It's something that always fascinated me about the Pyramids in Egypt . . . they should have been impossible to build in their time . . .

I have not visited Perta, Angkor Wat or Chichen Itza . . . so I can't make comment really.

Oh, if I take this as a criteria I shouldn't comment at all! I haven't seen one of the candidates.  embarrassed
Fortunately I've the chance to begin to change this and see the Colosseum next week.

Awesome place.

The construction - arch onto arch - offsetting - is what holds it up. And if you haven't been to see the Pyramids, and it's the sort of thing that interests you, I definitely recommend the trip.

I have only seen pictures - and watch History Channel - about Easter Island.

Petra is definatley up there... how they managed to carve so much into the side of a canyon is amazing, the buildings there are truly stunning, especially the famous khazneh (treasury). The Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China & Hagia Sofia get my vote as well!
