it seems to me that Amnet doesn't want to admit that there may be an outage on their feed

The problem was remedied by running new cable from the connection outside the house to the modem.
|Quoting Carmenlu15 (Reply 2):|
What I usually do when I have issues with my internet connection is to reset the modem: disconnect the power supply, wait a minute or so, and reconnect. The lights will start blinking one by one, until all of them are lit up. (My modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5101, so I assume yours will work in a similar way.) Then I open the Network Connections folder, right-click on the internet connection icon, and select Repair.

the TV cable signal is OK.
|Quoting Go3Team (Reply 4):|
Ours was ok as well. It was just something funny about the actual wiring that was messed up. There was a way to pull up a menu on the digital cable box and tell it wasn't getting a full proper signal, but it still worked ok.
