My Internet Connection Is Acting Up

Mon Nov 27, 2006 6:22 am

Throughout the entire weekend, we've had nothing but problems with the broadband connection here. The receive and the send lights would constantly blink and according to the manual, it happens when the modem tries to establish a connection. Since friday evening, the connection would be dropping many times throughout the day.

We've called our ISP and they say they have no problems on their end. Later we called the cable modem service distributor, Amnet (remember that here in Costa Rica, the state holds a monopoly on all things regarding telecommunications) and all they told us is to power cycle both modem and router. The curious thing is that every time we do that with the CSR from Amnet on the phone, it would stay connected but after a few minutes, it would drop yet again. As far as the cables go, they are all properly connected.

My connection is now up for the time being, but I'm worried about it crapping out again. I doubt that it's the modem (a Motorola Surfboard SB5120) though, because this happened already twice before this weekend and it would sort itself out without any power cycles (and as I said, power cycling didn't work they way we expected), yet it seems to me that Amnet doesn't want to admit that there may be an outage on their feed. In any case, we'll talk with our computer technician to evaluate further and on the spot.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

I've had the same problems awhile ago. The moedem would try and connect, and when it would, the connection sucked, it was pretty slow. The problem was remedied by running new cable from the connection outside the house to the modem. The cable wiring in the house needed to be redone. I havn't had a problem since it was fixed.

What I usually do when I have issues with my internet connection is to reset the modem: disconnect the power supply, wait a minute or so, and reconnect. The lights will start blinking one by one, until all of them are lit up. (My modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5101, so I assume yours will work in a similar way.) Then I open the Network Connections folder, right-click on the internet connection icon, and select Repair.

If this should fail, or if the modem lights keep blinking, then it's definitely an ISP issue, or in your case

 yes

Fortunately I don't have much trouble with my ISP in that aspect; if they say they'll take 20 minutes to reestablish the connection, they will take 20 minutes, otherwise they let me know I'm SOL on the spot. Big grin
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

It might just be the wiring, but I seriously doubt that. The cable modem and TV are connected through two different outlets and the TV cable signal is OK. It's only the internet signal which sucks.

Did all that, and it all failed. I thought that maybe today it could sort itself out if it is indeed an ISP issue, but nada. The lights are still blinking, with a sporadical connection for a few minutes.

I'm at work now, so I'm back online for the moment. I hope that once I'm back home, it's all good now but I'm not holding my breath on that. Hopefully later today or tommorow the technician who set up the router comes with a few more ideas.

Ours was ok as well. It was just something funny about the actual wiring that was messed up. There was a way to pull up a menu on the digital cable box and tell it wasn't getting a full proper signal, but it still worked ok.

Come to think of it, while it may not be the wiring inside the house, it could be the outside wiring (maybe the cable got loose from the master distributor box). All the main wiring in Costa Rica is above the ground (power lines, phone lines, etc. are not underground except in the San José city centre) and with the start of the autumn winds here, something could have happened.

I just hope that I don't have to call Anmet again or else, they'll say it's the modem. But then again, if it is, the modem is still under warranty. I also hope that it's not the worst case scenario, which is that my father, who pays all of our bills (while I always give him money for shopping and paying bills under this mutual agreement we both have), has forgotten to pay the bill. If he did forget to pay the bill, there will be hell.  gnasher

Well, it seems it was only the outside connection (not the one inside the house) which made my internet act up. I was told that the connection between the distributor box and the coaxial cable was loose, so they had to screw it tight again, although later they came to replace some part (don't know which, but maybe it was a precautionary replacement) and everything is back. I hope this won't happen again at all.

Thanks for the help.

I occasionally have problems with mine doing the same thing and the cause of it is the splitter outside the house. It splits the computer and t.v. cables I saw the technician when he came out to fix it he changed it and it worked for a couple of weeks and it did it again so I went an bought a splitter and changed it myself and it fixed the problem. Every now and then I have to swap the new and old splitters to keep it going but I was getting tired of calling the cable people out to fix it although I shouldn't have to do it.
