So Who Is Your Favourite Football Player?

Mon Nov 27, 2006 10:45 pm

After the "best goal" thread, I thought why not?

For all you football fans out there, who is your favourite football player of all time, and why?

My favourite: Ryan Giggs

Ever since 1993 or so when I started paying proper attention to football, Giggs has been the player I've looked up to more than anyone else. His speed, acceleration, skills on the ball, crossing and shooting, everything is just brilliant. I've never seen anyone else run as fast with the ball "glued" to his shoes.

And despite being the talented player he is, and has been for nearly two decades now, he has managed to keep both feet on the ground throughout, and kept a fairly low profile.

Another thing is that he has been loyal to his club ever since the start. Even when he was about to develop with Manchester City at the start of his career, he always wanted to play for United. And despite many offers from other clubs over the years, he has stayed loyal to United, and always delivered.

And if any more reasons are needed to explain why I think he's the greatest player ever, then sit back for the next 10 + minutes, and enjoy:

Now if only he could learn to use his right foot too...  Smile

Ryan Giggs

My roomate as well. He adores Giggs. He grew up in Isle of Wight and would travel wherever he had to to see him play.

As for me, my favorite player all time is Zinedine Zidane. In 1998, when he exploded onto the stage in France, I told my friends and family that France was going to win under his leadership. Nobody believed me at first. Then, in 2002, they got embarassed. Again, something I called, thanks to Zidane's movement to Real and all his team members' issues. In 2006 they were expected to do badly, and even had to resort to pulling Zidane out of retirement, along with Thuram. I told my friends and family, France will play badly its first game, but then will go to the Final. If they play Italy they will lose, and if they play Germany they will win. I said this before they even started games in Germany. Again, I was called crazy, but lo and behold, I was right. I think Zidane is an incredible leader on the French team and overall a great guy. Despite the idiotic head-butt, no matter how provoked it was, I still love to watch him play and I still think he's definitely in the top 5 players all time, along with Pele, Maradona, and Ronaldinho. The fifth one is hard to choose, IMHO. After last weekend in the Champions League, maybe Nakamura? haha.

My Favourite player for last few years would be Frank Lampard when he first came to Chelsea and every year he is getting plenty of great goals, setting them up and absolutely owning ass against the opposition......I just hope he doesnt go to Barcelona.

Also another one of my favourites when he played for Chelsea was Gianfranco Zola, scored alot of memorable goals.

Barthez was overall a good goalkeeper, but he made too many crucial mistakes which got a lot of attention. Keep in mind that Schmeichel had some unbelievable blunders too. Nobody is perfect.

Right after Peter retired I said always said "Get Barthez, he'll do a good job!" And then fergie brought in Bosnich and Taibi...  Yeah sure

Tim Howard is currently on loan to Everton for the season. With Van der Sar there just wasn't any chance of first team action for Howard. Van der Sar is btw the best keeper United have had since Schmeichel I think...

Van Dar Sar is a great keeper, although Tim Howard was a nobody when he joined United. He was a good goalie for the money they paid for them.

Schmeichel was on tv over the past few weeks on a programme called strictly come dancing. He still has all his charm!

Speaking of Edwin Van der Sar i heard his position at stake because of Louis Saha's last 2 performances for Man utd,He cost man utd their chance of one point in champions league by missing a penalty......Damn it was funny hearing that his own teammates didnt have faith in him taking the shot!

Also against Chelsea where he did goal a pretty soft goal but his goal keeping antics by trying to head the ball when Van Der sar had it clearly covered allowing Chelsea to equalize costing Man utd their chance at 3 points has alot of people speculating what position he wants to play in.... Smile

This is a difficult question. A list would be better. Modern day for me would be Zidane/Henry/Ronaldinho. All time greats Maradona/Best/Pele. Best is close to home for me, but I only praise him for what he did with a football. Simply, simply, amazing.

For what is worth, I hate Maradona to the death. The guy is nothing but a fake, especially since he scored with the "Hand of God" in 1986. Just notice how his performaces rapidly started to decline during the 1990 World Cup. At least people like Pelé played consistently good throughout their carreers.

Left United for Everton in 95.
