Uruguay Rocks!

Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:51 pm

So, after two weeks bumming around this overlooked little corner of South America, we´ve had great time, and couldn´t recommend it higher to a.net members.

Ten things to love about Uruguay:

The weather! Not too hot, not too cold. And no humidity, mossies or jabs.

The prices! It´s for NOTHING for anyone coming from Europe or the States.

The steaks! Some 3cm thick, some plate size. Who cares about BSE?

The people! Well, with up to 80% of Italian/Spanish descent, it has to make for a great gene pool. And they´re friendly too.

Mate! Well, I suppose it must be if you get used to it. All Uruguayans can´t be wrong.

The flag! If Versace were to design one, this would be it.

Colonia! Unesco World Heritage Site and the most amazingly beautiful little place to do nothing for a few days

The cars! Some old bangers from the 40s and 50s still chugging around. And the ones that don´t are used as street decorations. Inspired!

Grappa con miel! Probably the quickest and sweetest way to lose the plot.

and finally, Punta! South America´s premier tourist resort is an amazing combination of Canaries, Ibiza and St Tropez. Just a pity we´re going to miss it when the season stars in a few weeks time. Apparently, that´s when the fun REALLY starts.

The Uruguayan Tourist Board badly needs to get its act together and sell this gem of a country abroad. They are going crazy for visitors, particularly from the States and Europe. So, if anyone is looking for somwhere civilised, different, safe and fun, GET BOOKING NOW!

This advertising is worthless without any pics ...
But it sounds good.
Still, even in the most arid desert is an airport somewhere ...

I've been traveling to Uruguay for vacation ever since i was a boy and i also LOVE it!! BTW, the "PDP" in my nick is the IATA code for the airport in Punta del Este; which is one of the coolest, most beautiful beach resorts [with beautiful people] on the planet.

The country-side is gorgeous, with endless rolling, grass-filled plains and wonderful ranches; great for an authentic south american countryside experience.

The coastline is amazing and you can drive all the way to the Brazil border and stop at countless beautiful, deserted atlantic beaches.

As Braybuddy has correctly pointed out, the best thing about Uruguay is the people. The country is safe and its people are warm, engaging and cultured.

Finally, no BSE worries as the cattle are pasture-fed; eat all the steaks you want while savoring some local Tannat red wine!!!

Yet the best barbecue is still brazilian  Wink

When I was growing up, my folks had a house for vacation in Uruguay - La Coronilla to be precise. I absolutely concur with you that this country is terrific. The people, the food, the sights. We often go back there when visiting in Brazil.

I am posting a few google pics for you. This is the place we used to spend the summer.

Whopps bad mistake.

I like the white house by the sea with the pool. Are those finger tips protuding from the beach?

Also I see Uruguay are still in the 30's when it comes to automobiles. They might just be shocked if they ever saw an F1 car  Silly

No! They are just individual fingers sitting ON the beach. It's by a Chilean artist and it's called "Mano", which I think means "hand". I can just imagine what would happen to that in Ireland: the local knacks would topple the outer three and turn the two remaining around giving the V sign . . .

LOL! They're not all that old! The ones in the pics are used as street decorations. Brilliant idea.
