How Far Away Is Your House From The Next Freeway?

Thu Nov 30, 2006 3:10 am

Today I've been at the Peugeot car dealer to get winter tires for my mother's car. While I was waiting in the line at the customer service desk I listened to a talk between some lady and an employee. The lady said something like: "Sorry, I can't be a customer here for longer because I'll move away next month, we bought a house near Muenster which is approx. 45 minutes away from the next Autobahn, all in all I would drive 90 minutes to you... blah, blah, blah".

I said to myself: "WTF, which normal thinking person is moving to the middle of nowhere where the next freeway is 45 mins away?".

My apartment is 3 minutes away from the next freeway entrance (as you can see on the map below), I have direct access to the A40 which leads to Essen in one, and to Dortmund in the other direction.

The A43, A44, and A52 are nearby and I can reach them in max. 15 minutes.

So how far away is the next freeway from your house? Do you live in the middle of nowhere or in an area with a good traffic infrastructure?

Patrick

Some people like living out in the sticks, in a more rural environment and so forth.

That said I am about 20 minutes away from the nearest freeway (about 15 miles). But the road to it, about 2/3rds of it, is a 4-lane limited access road w/ a 55 mph speed limit.

Lets put it this way - A good magnifying glass and I can tell you what radio station the commuters on I-5 are tuned to.

As a rule, I like to be no more than five or so miles from on-ramp. That's why I'm a city boy, I can live in a great neighborhood full of character, and still be on the freeway w/in five minutes.

I'm lucky to live in the North West of England which has the densest region of Motorways in the UK. I live within 2 miles of the nearest Junction of the M61 and about 3 miles for the junction of the M6. However, we can use a local service station to get on the M6 as it's now illegal to close the site access roads thanks to ancient laws! It saves a lot of time and is only know to locals though.

Whilst you can probably guess where I live with a bit of detective work here is a modified Google Earth shot of my village.

I live pretty close to freeways (or highways as we call them all here in MA):

From my house:

I-95/MA-128: 2 miles, 6 minutes
US-3: 2 miles, 5 minutes
MA-2: 5 miles, 15 minutes

Big version: Width: 635 Height: 683 File size: 97kb

From my apartment (only moved here 4 weeks ago):

I-93: 2 miles, 10 minutes
MA-2: 4 miles, 15 minutes
US-1: 3 miles, 10 minutes
I-90: 4 miles, 15 minutes

Big version: Width: 639 Height: 638 File size: 146kb

not too shabby all around.

EDIT: edited to add the wicked awesome googlemaps screenshots.

It's less than 5 minutes from my apartment to the next entrance of A12 (Austria). The thing is, I won't use the autobahn that much in the next months since they reduced the speed limit to 100 km/h during winter. I would definitely call myself an environmentalist, but 100 is a bit too slow, even for me.

My house is about 50 miles from a motorway, takes up to 50 mins to reach it, depending on speed. Although there is the A38, which was re-named "The Devon Expressway" to make it sound better, that's about 6 miles away.

I live in Plymouth at the bottom of the map and the motorway starts at Exeter, at the top.

Closer up though, there is the A386 which runs not too far from my house, it's one of the few dual carriageway sections and is just a 40mph section of road, so its not too noisy.

btw - it's literally just in the last day or so that Google Earth have mapped my area at home, I checked a few days ago for something, so I'm pleased now, it's taken them long enough!

We do, but it still can't work that much of a wonder on the scenery! As far as I can tell, it was mapped some time during the summer of 2005, between late July and the start of September, and at about 12-3pm.

I live maybe .3-.5 miles away to an entrance to I-195 and from my backyard I it is even closer to swim. But it takes me atleast 3-5 minutes to get on the freeway which might be .5 miles away anytime of the day except for late at night.

My house is about 2 miles north of I-10 in Kenner, LA. The fun thing to think about is that if one hops on I-10 and drives 1,800 miles to the west, then gets off I-10 and goes straight north for about 3 or 4 miles, they'll reach the house I grew up in in Claremont, CA.....

Given the choice I'd move out to the middle of nowhere and work from home.
But there's precious little of that around here and it's too expensive for me to live there (because others got there first and don't want to move).

So I make do with a quiet little place about 2km from the nearest highway, about 1km from the nearest trainstation, and 500m from the nearest busstop.
Sadly it's also about 2m from the nearest humans, but decent sound insulation means I don't usually hear them.

Hmm....I guess I can so I'm about say 75mi from the nearest true freeway (I-95). If you call the SR-1 expressway a freeway, then I'd say 35mi, but that doesn't really take you anywhere.

15 miles to I-87.
7 miles to Rte 17.

Almost all the local roads around here are 55mph, so it takes no time to get to the entrance ramps.

3 minutes south - 407
3 minutes south - Highway 7
8 minutes west - 400
8 minutes east - 404
15 minutes south - 401

I'm about 3 minutes from the 407 (Bayview) and 5 minutes from highway 7 (its not really a "highway" but close enough). From the 407 we can access the 401, 404, QEW, 403, 427, 400. When doing directly from the house we only use the 407 and 7.

I am 1 mile away from the Turnpike (not free). In the mornings it tkaes me 15 minutes to get to work. Going home is another story; that can take 25 minutes leaving at 1530, 40 minutes at 1630 and an hour after 1725. And I hate traffic. I told my wife I want an M1A1 for my birthday so I can go around or over the traffic.

My nearest Motorway is either Liverpool (M62), 60 miles and a 3 1/2hr ferry journey, or Lancaster (M6) a 4hr ferry journey.

Of course, I can fly to LPL, MAN, LGW, BHX, GLA, NCL, LBA or BRS and be minutes away from a motorway by hire car!

5-10 minutes from the Barton/Federal Highways. 30-60 minutes to the Hume Highway, depending which way you go.

The nearest freeway would be one up near Sydney, so three plus hours away.

Let's explain. The red box shows my student housing area, Vildanden, here in Lund. The red dot shows the location of my dorm-room, on the ground floor of that building.

The green dots are bus stops, not a long walk from my dorm. The blue arrow points to the nearest motorway, which, if you follow that road, is about 3 miles away. The yellow arrow points toward the city centre.

I am about 15 miles from the nearest interstate highway (I-10) and getting there takes 20-30 minutes due to all of the roads being four lane, 40 mph surface streets. Folks in NE Tucson have it worst as they are about 20-25 miles from the interstate either way they go. To get to the interstate from there takes about an hour as there are no high speed routes. When I was driving motorcoaches and took groups out the resorts on that side of town, often someone would ask how close the nearest interstate was. The answer was you can go 20 miles south or 30-35 miles east-take your pick! The drive from TUS to the Westin La Paloma resort is something like 45 minutes and all on city streets!

It's great to be close to the freeway, but man the noise is just deafening. I plan on moving within the next three years.

Defining a 'freeway' as a limited access divided highway without any businesses directly accessable from the road - I live less than 2 miles from NJ-21, 5 miles or less from I-80, I-95 (NJ Turnpike) and the Garden State Parkway. Where I grew up and where my parents still live, is only about 1 mile from I-287. I also live less than 3 miles from NJ-3 and NJ-17 which are major divided highways, but with direct access to roadside businesses.

Well I have had to change the google maps image, because it is wrong.

It has missed of the emergency slip roads and the motorway goes under the road not over it.

No doubt some people may be able to figure out where I live.

I live some 500 m from the Carretera Interamericana or CA-1 (this large highway that crosses the country from east to west, and connects with other large highways that go all the way up to Alaska and all the way down to Chile  Silly ). However, the part where I live is between two cities, and there's almost nothing (except for plenty of trees) nearby, so I feel pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Five minutes early on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Ten to fifteen minutes at all other times.

I am about 1 3/4 miles from the A5103 (which joins the M56) and a bit closer to the M60 which is the orbital motorway that goes around Manchester. I'm in quite a convenient location because I can be on either motorway in less than 10 minutes, no matter what time of day.

I drive along the whole length of the M56 (and then some) into North Wales for work. It is a 45 mile commute but can be done in 45 minutes off peak and 60-80 minutes in peak traffic. Not too bad at all really considering the distance. I have to agree that the motorway network in the North West of England is quite good and the congestion isn't all that bad except for relativley brief rush hour periods.

In case anyone is wondering I don't live exactly where the arrow is pointing  Smile

I live in a small, landlocked area that is close to the freeway from either end. Since 1994. There is another area about 25 minutes away that my wife loves, but I can't take the long drive and she is hesitant about it because of that.

And there is a very small area close to us that has some nice houses, right next to the river, that face a very large greenbelt area in front. So when you live there and face the river, you feel you are out of the city. That's the place we want to live later.

So in all likelihood, I will live in this area and keep the same phone number and easy freeway access for a long time.
