Official Army/Navy Game Thread

As close to combat as it comes
Ian O'Connor / Special to FOXSports.com

The winds of war forever sweep across the West Point campus, stirring the souls of officers and gentlemen and the young halfbacks in training for the day they must confront a sniper or roadside bomb.

In this culture, Earl Blaik never had trouble inspiring his Army cadets on the eve of the one and only football game that ever mattered on their schedule.

"Playing Navy," Blaik would say. "is the closest thing to combat."

Nearly 50 years later, Bob Anderson can still hear the Colonel delivering that scouting report. It was 1958 when Anderson and Pete Dawkins formed the all-American backfield that defeated Navy to punctuate the last undefeated season posted by either academy team.

The world was a different place back then, and so was the world of major-college football. Vince Lombardi was in the Municipal Stadium stands that day in Philadelphia, because Army-Navy wasn't just an occasion to celebrate the young men courageous enough to man America's war machine for the bloody conflicts to come.

How many points did Air Force put up against Army 43? Expect the same or more from Navy and a nine victory season before playing in some car-repair bowl.
*Side note best drive I ever saw in college football was the 26 play 14 minute drive against New Mexico two years ago in San Francisco that used up almost the entire 4th quarter and ensure the win for Navy.

I am surprised that Army still plays Division 1 football. With the current weight and size measurments including the BMI how can these guys compete except with a whole lot of speed the way Air Force plays with it option style play. Army still believes in the 3 yards and a cloud of dust in which they get clobbered by bigger defensive lines and lighting fast linebackers, cant belive Notre Dame still schedules the service academies, it does them no good with their BCS rankings and are poor competion for them right before the powerhouse of USC.
I would help you but it is not in the contract

But it gives their whale of a coach an excuse when they loose. I believe he said something along the lines of "we didn't really have any stiff competition leading up to the USC game to help us prepare". I also believe he said before the game that their game against Army was basically a practice for their game against USC. Truly a douche-bag. *And I was at the USC-ND game and Weiss truly does look like a whale. I would be embarrassed to have him as my coach.

o yah... GO NAVY!!!

Hell I'm going for Army, I bet on them, so they better win. The Army/Navy game is far and away my favorite game of the year.

Well, it's over, and the Annapolis class of 07 is the first Navy class to have beaten Army in each of their meetings while Midshipmen.

Sad for Army, but you have to give Navy's coach Paul Johnson a huge amount of credit. He has somehow figured out how to take a group of motivated but undersized players and produce consistent winning seasons.

Paul Johnson with backing from the administration has really turned the Naval Academy football around, a very decent mid level program. Now the question will Annapolis be able to keep him, and if he does stay can he avoid going off the deep end like 5 star out in Colorado Springs, who is quickly turning into an embarrassment for the Air Force Academy.

Well I was at the game, in the "ear-popping/nose bleeding" section. It was freezing and windy, but the game was at least half descent. Even if it wasn't any good, the pageantry makes it worth going to. The 4 F-18 and 4 AH-64 flybys were nice too  Smile.
