Are Older Operating Systems Still Being Sold?

Mon Dec 04, 2006 5:44 pm

Like Windows 95 or Dos 5.22 or previous?

Do the computers that supported them still exist?

Yes and no. For the consumer in the retail market the answer is no. Microsoft will only support the latest 2 revisions. Once Vista hits the shelves you will see support for Win2K go bye bye along with any chance of buying it if that chance hasn't passed already due to an end of sales point.

For vendors who use embedded OS in their products the answer is yes. I noticed that a bomb sniffer device being used by TSA in ATL last week was rebooting and showing a Windows98 (not even Second Edition) startup screen.

Yes, but not through the official channels, check eBay.
Any standard PC offered today will accept DOS and earlier Windowses as the operating system. For many system chipsets, such as the later nVidia family, there'll be no driver support, but the system will run in a slower compatibility mode (win95).

I still use my computer with Windows 3.1 every so often, but I doubt you can find that software readily.

The high school that I graduated from earlier this year was still using Gateways 2000s, with Win95 on them. Due to the lack of funding from the state of Ohio, which itself is broke, I don't believe those things will be replaced anytime soon.

As far as I know, yes, the A.net servers do indeed still exist. Wink duck
