Are Carbs And Fatty/greasy Foods Really That Bad?

Mon Dec 04, 2006 6:11 pm

Check it out: I'm vegitarian by religion but my primary diet is what people regard as fatty foods that have loads of calories, like pastas. (Please don't gimme crap about being vegitarian or correct me for what I eat and call me vegan, I'm into that PC crap, I go by my religion)

When people see me with donuts or a bag of chips they do ask me how can I eat it and look so thin. Well it's not my fault, but then I wonder how do most o'ya'll who have eaten high-calorie foods get big in those areas?

Genetics has a lot to do with physique. I'm not saying diet has no impact, but genetics is a big factor.

Genetics, metabolism, your actual diet has a lot to do with your physique indeed. If you don't eat meat, you won't consume the carbs, fat, colesterol found in some meats. So you are kinda balancing it off, with your bag of chips or your dount. At the same time, some people are blessed with a high metabolism, so eating alot of 'unhealthy' foods does nothing to their body.

Be mindful though, that you don't need to be fat to experience colesterol problems. Of that I would be wary if I were you, as the body doesn't break down colesterol easily, and it builds up on the walls of your vascular system causing problems.

Nothing like setting the thread up for failure from the get go!

That said:

Eat what you want, I think your genetic make up and family history will have more to do with what ails you than what you eat . . . of course, your diet and life style can make your genetic problems worse - or better. I wouldn't center my life around what I eat or drink. We're not on this planet long enough to in the first place, might as well make the one go 'round you have fun!

You seem to have pretty much made up your mind about this subject. Is there a question there?

Out of pure curiosity, what religion requires you to be a vegetarian?

I don't suggest you try this. It's just an example of how you can get large if you really want to:

Start by counting your calorie intake for a typical day's worth of eating. A 2000 calorie daily diet isn't abnormal.

Then go ahead and double or triple it, with all those extra calories coming via things like chips, chocolate bars, cake, donuts, ice cream, fast food, soft drinks/pop, etc.

Eat this way consistently for say, 6 months to 1 year, and I'll tell if you still look thin after it all.

That's only half the picture. While eating this way won't do you any favours for your heart, joints, immune system and sleep patterns, it's not the be all and end all of gaining weight.

Exercise is the key factor. If you eat like this and sit around all day doing nothing, you will certainly gain weight. But eat like this and work out hard 5 or 6 days a week, rotating work out regimes through the major muscle groups, and work on cardio regularly, and you could sustain that diet and not put on a great deal of weight.

As important as exercise is (I agree it is massively important and I do it 5-6 days per week), it is not the key component. In order of importance, diet comes before exercise.

Take one measly plain donut (forget about those with icing/filling/etc.). This little "treat" pumps about 200 calories into you in seconds, whereas eliminating these calories takes roughly 30 minutes of brisk walking.

Now say you eat 5-6 of these donuts and wash it down with a litre of Coke. And just for good measure you scarf down a Big Mac with fries for dinner, and a half litre of Ben & Jerry's ice cream for dessert. Sorry, but exercising "hard" to eliminate that crap just isn't going to cut it.

I wouldn't say it's the key factor... but an important component. In the end, it's all about how much you intake vs how much your body burns off.

If you have a high metabolism, your body will burn off more calories than your typical everyday person... and therefore, you will stay thinner than normal. That said, not everyone keeps a high metabolism forever... and the weight will pile on unless there is a shift in the balance of diet & exercise.

If you want to eat like a pig continuously and not workout... then you will certainly pack on the pounds very quickly... these are exactly the reasons why so many people are obese today.

Working out but maintaining an unhealthy diet may keep your weight consistent, but you're also clogging your arteries and robbing yourself of essential vitamins and nutrients to stay fully healthy... not a good idea.

You can also eat very healthy and lose weight without exercise... but that does nothing to keep your muscles & bones in top condition.. things you need to rely on when you get older...  Wink

It's all about moderation... keep the food intake at regular intervals and the portions small. Exercise a few times a week and ensure there is lots of cardio in your routine as it is by far the most effective. Always be sure to allow yourself the occassional donut or ice cream or whatever you crave... after all, you do need to enjoy life too!

Like I said, you're only on this planet a short time . . . and you can either worry every day about what you eat, where you go, whether you'l lget hit by a train tomorrow on your way to the office, or you can live life hard, fast and fun.

It's your call really . . . I'm opting for the hard, fast and fun. If by some chance I get plowed by a train tomorrow, at least my list of "Gee I wish I'd done more of this and that" will be a hell of a lot shorter than someone that watches out for every little thing they eat, drive, drink, etc . . .

Hey, it's all good. You're obviously free to do whatever you wish. People have differing opinions on what they consider "living it up", but you'll excuse me if I don't consider eating shit-disguised-as-food as an example of it.

Probably the same religion that means he has to spend a cold night freezing his bollocks off with his computer outside to try and clock the speed!

Let me put it this way. I almost completely removed carbs and fatty/greasy foods from my diet. In little over 2 years, together with exercise I went from this:
