Beloved to whom? I have not seen many over here, although I do know one man who sold his about a month after getting it.

And yes, that looks like a direct rip-off, but I don't think I'd drive a Chinese (Asian) car made after a European car in North America. Just too many continents involved.

Problem is that the PRC government controlled companies are the biggest ripoffs of patents, trademarks, trade dress and copyrights in the world, and the government basically encourages it. I would suspect that most countries cannot allow the import of these Chinese Smart cars for design copying. Don't forget too that Daimler-Chrysler makes or does CKD assembly of cars in China (mainly Jeep models) in the PRC, so could put pressure on them from that subsidary.

BTW, guess the brand...

hint: no, it is not a BMW or Mercedes

And the rest of the world does nothing about it...
Hey they blatantly steal our stuff but it's ok because Chinese market is too big so we better suck up to them and try to sell them some weapons instead...

What a waste...you see so many Chinese students in American engineering schools, they come home, only to rip off the future work of their former classmates so it seems.

The society that invented gunpowder, is now reduced to hacks.

I'm probably the only one with this idea, and feel free to flame me - but good for them if they manage to make some copies. It's up to the market to decide who's going to sell what: the Chinese clones are usually of bad quality anyway (keywords crash test, moose test, materials, etc), and if someone decides to buy those things it's up to them. Should they be of the same quality like the european original, well, then probably the original manufacturer should do something to make their originals even better, and maybe lower their absurd pay-for-the-name prices.

Edit: who loves the smart car anyway?  Smile

I hope so, because you either don't know what you are talking about or your comments are intentionally assinine. Never heard of something called "intellectual property"???

or maybe why not just turn their employees into slaves, forget about labor laws, work safety, hygienic standards and safe work conditions.
This is not just the case of some huge difficult-to-sympathize-with multinational companies which are being robbed with tacit support of Chinese government but also small and medium companies with few dozens or hundreds employees, which were manufacturing all kinds of products, investing energy, money and most of all their ideas in development and design and then you say it's "ok" for them just steal it, put it through reverse engineering and then dump it on the market identical product for some ridiculous price?

In principle I think things like people paying extra money for a t-shirt or whatever just so it says Dolce and Gabbana or Abercrombie or whatever across the front of it is just sad. Furthermore, in some of these cases, the orginal brand names also exploit cheap sweatshop labor.

However, with engineered material--we're not talking t-shirts here--it ISN'T just a case of people paying for a name. The are not only massive differences in labor protection, safety standards, etc., but also a huge difference in how the things actually work.

Consider it more of a provocation. I'm perfectly aware of what I'm talking about. But this Chinese "we copy everything" issue should wake some (not all, but some) companies up which have been sleeping and busy counting their revenue money.

My father works in the electrical outlet / power switchboard business for a major european company, and their products have recently been copied by the Chinese. Guess what? They have analyzed the copied product, and it turns out it's *better* than their original.

Now, instead of just getting mad and screaming at the Chinese, they took this "provocation" as a challenge to make their products even better, to justify the higher prices. They did, and everything's fine again.

So, let the public/market decide. I doubt anyone in the EU or in the US would buy a Chinese cloned car which kills you in your first crash only because it's cheaper. They will probably only sell cars in China, where Mercedes wouldn't sell many cars anyway.

Again, this was a provocation, I'm very well aware of how these things work. But instead of just jumping around and screaming at how morally wrong the Chinese are, our companies should just make sure that the Chinese won't be able to sell anything in our market, by making their own products better. Some already are.

These cars look similar on the outside, but the engineering isn't so easy, they are probably very different underneath.

It's no different really than .mp3 manufacturers copying the ipod design or something. Just cause they all resemble each other doesn't mean that you won't choose a brand name.

As someone else said, would you really buy one of those over the real thing? they are cheap for a reason.
