12 Year Old Boy Arrested For Opening Xmas Gifts

Wed Dec 06, 2006 9:19 am

Mother Has 12-Year-Old Son Arrested for Opening Christmas Gift Early

A 12-year-old South Carolina boy got an unexpected stocking stuffer — a pair of handcuffs — after he snuck into his Christmas gifts a few weeks early.

After a mother discovered her son had unwrapped a Nintendo Game Boy Advance that was meant for him as a present from his grandmother, she called the Rock Hill Police and had the young man arrested for petty larceny, according to the police report filed this week.

"He took it without permission. He wanted it. He just took it," the boy's 63-year-old great-grandmother told the Rock Hill Herald.

The great-grandmother said in the filed complaint that she wrapped the gift and placed it under the tree at her house — then specifically told the boy not to open it.

But when she checked under the tree Sunday, she found the box unwrapped and opened. The great-grandmother relayed the news to the mother, who is 27-years-old.

When the boy claimed he didn't know where the present was, the mother threatened to call the cops. On that threat, the boy went to his bedroom and grabbed the $85 Game Boy, according to the report.

But mom still called the police.

And the boy "showed no remorse" when the police came, mother said.

The boy was charged as a juvenile and released the same day, said police spokesman Lt. Jerry Waldrop. He was never in jail.

"We wouldn't hold a 12-year-old," he told the Rock Hill Herald.

On Monday night, the mother said she didn't know what else to do but call the police in hopes it would be a wake-up call for her son.

The mother told police that the boy has a history of bad behavior, including shoplifting from stores and stealing money from her. The mother said he even punched a police officer last month and was arrested for disorderly conduct for it.

"I'm trying to get him some kind of help," she told the Rock Hill Herald.

HERE IS THE POLICE REPORT:

Seriously though, there are a number of (possible) reasons why this happened:

Lack of sex education
Lack of birth control instruction/availability (perhaps)
Lack of responsibility
Lack of parenting skills
Lack of the desire to read rather than own an X-box...

I actually have to hand it to the mother. If she has had problems with this kid, she had to resort to something.

I agree, this family needs sex ed, or at least a package of rubbers drop-shipped to Rock Hill.

The mother is 27, had the kid at 15.

Her GRANDMOTHER was 36 when she was born.

That speaks volumes to me and I don't know about others here, but I'd be extremely embarassed to have to tell anybody that. It amounts to "I cannot control my child." Sounds like the little 12 year old punk needs the slipper or the wooden spoon treatment that I used to get when I did something wrong! Did me no harm apart from the occasional red arse.

This kid was simply being a kid. The mother obviously a psychotic moron wanted to scare the lights out of him. Like who the hell does that .... ON XMAS!

Who puts Christmas presents out at the beginning of December? I guess they skipped a trailer rental payment to buy that Game Boy.

Even funnier is the "description" of the mom

Oh boy, I dont even know where to begin. This sounds like a case of a TOTAL family dysfunction AND very bad parenting combined. I'd begin with the 27 year old mother, which basically this goes to show this is HER fault to begin with. She shouldnt have been out 12 years ago getting jiggy and ending up pregnant knowing the ramifications of having a child is a very huge responsibility. Children are not fish....

Its all on the 27 year old mother. I have no respect for her now, nor will I provide any sympathy if I ever met her.

If a kid has a problem with impulse control (stealing etc.), why would you put a present under the tree a month early? There's some basic common sense issues here. It's almost like they wanted the kid to screw up. Hopefully the police involvement will trigger a social work referral so someone can help these people raise the poor kid.

Great. So, once again, the police have to intervene simply because a parent is too inept to raise and discipline her own kid. Sounds like the mother should have been hauled off, not the kid.

Despite the fact that she opened her legs at 14/15 and what I think of that, I think she did the right thing to try and teach the kid a lesson in respect.

Sounds like this kid is already a total shit - I just hope his family can try and turn that around, but sadly doubt it.

It's not unheard of for police to be asked by a parent to get involved in order to put the frighteners on a kid in the hope that a lesson might be learnt. If it works, then the police might have one less criminal to deal with in the future.

For all we know, that might be exactly what's happened here. A parent at her wits end as to how to deal with him, asks the police for a little help.

Not everybody is a perfect parent, not every life is an easy comfortable one. Rather than just criticising her, perhaps a little thought that a young mother is doing her best in difficult circumstances might be in order.

You would respect your parents.... ok I did as well. But XMAS was that time of year where it was an adventure. If your Mom and Dad had to TELL you to not go looking... then obviously you were looking. Quite frankly, many kids do this and it has nothing to do with bad parenting. Kids are excited over presents and obviously you forgot the mindset of a kid. At 8 or 12 years old, the kid is not saying to himself.... this is morally wrong, I am going to hurt my parents if I do this! Where the hell did you grow up?

Obviously your childhood was incorrectly balanced and at that your advice should have been taken.... that stupid people should not breed.... Exactly. Kids to these things, and should be dealt with by the parents. Here, however, we have a parent who is too lazy/drunk/drugged up/stupid to properly discipline her kid properly. Like others mentioned, ground the kid, take away other gifts, whatever, but sure as hell don't call the police. The police is here to prevent/solve crime, not raise your kid. And calling this a "petty larceny" has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

enroll in writing classes as well? Oh your one of those ignoramuses who are perfect on here..... no spelling errors or anything? However beyond that my sentence made perfect sense Smile ... I am condemning the moronic mother of this child for calling the police in the first place. You have to be pretty sick to do something like that over Christmas presents. I do not care what your opinion is, that is simply sick. As I said in my post above... I am condemning the moronic mother of this child for calling the police in the first place.

So, again, what are you trying to say? Is this bad parenting or not? First you say one has to be mental to call it bad parenting and then you say you are condemning the moronic mother for calling the police in the first place.

The posts above were saying its bad parenting which lead the kid to search for his Christmas presents while my point was the mother is conducting bad "parenting" from the view point of calling the police. I did not think the term belonged in my point until people like you actually took it on a personal note. This can indeed be confusing which is why I left out the word. I am looking at this from a different view then all the others who are making this young kid out to be Satan's child. I stated the "you have to be mental " comment towards the individuals who believe the boy got what he deserved. I even quoted it towards another member.

Why was the mother not arrested for breaking the law and having underage sex?

No proof. Kid could be adopted, sibling, etc.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Please point out those posts. Nobody was blaming the kid, everybody was blaming the mom for calling the cops. We all know kids do these things, and should be punished in an appropriate way.
