Super Bowl Or World Cup?

Fri Dec 08, 2006 9:53 pm

Hey Everyone,

While browsing through the Net I just came across a rather interesting Topic in one of the community Forum, the Topic was "What's the Biggest one-Sport event in the World - World Cup or Super Bowl?"

The answer to that question is quite obvious to many of us, but I was rather surprised that many americans think that the super bowl (I guess that's the american football final?) is bigger than the world cup final. How many people in the world watch the superbowl? and why do americans think it's a bigger event? (I think more than half the world watches the world cup final, does the same amount of people watch the superbowl?)

Many of them though I don't have actual numbers.

Quoting Bambicruz (Thread starter):

Because soccer sucks and is a girly sport of wandering aimlessly up and down the field kicking a ball with very little scoring and the more than occasional tie which is like kissing your sister.  stirthepot   duck

Perhaps also because the American media goes on and on every year about how big the Super Bowl is and how many people watch it in so many different countries and how many members of foreign media are there broadcasting it in their local language that maybe it could possibly be true.

Quoting Bambicruz (Thread starter):

Most likely not though I wonder if viewership for the Super Bowl is on par with the World Cup Final though the total viewership of the entire World Cup matches is more than the NFL Playoffs.

I believe i heard that over 300 million people watched the final game of this years World Cup.

And i think 141 million watched the last SuperBowl.

You obviously have never watched a world class soccer game. (and I don't mean MLS either)

The WC is even bigger than the olympics. It is the greatest even in the world.

You obviously missed the little pot stirring thing after my sentence. Yes I have watched many a world class soccer game and I can appreciate the sport. Where it breaks down for me though is the long spells without scoring and the way they always kick the ball backwards trying to set up another play when the first one goes just a wee bit wrong.

I played "American" football for many years and as an offensive player on an explosive team who scored points at will the thought of going backward on the field just doesn't make sense. It's a cultural thing between the Americans and the rest of the world. We seem to be brought up to appreciate offense and attacking the other team in the hopes of throwing more points up on the board where other countries and cultures like to see a defensive game with more of the strategy put towards stopping the scoring. Neither is right and neither is wrong. It's just the way it is.

Amd that's why I prefer college football over the NFL. Especially my Gators of the 1990s when we would routinely throw 70+ points on the board on any given Saturday.

I never really got into College football.

Even the NFL, yes i watch it, it interests me and i do get somewhat emotional when my team wins/loses.

Not to stir the pot, but i don't think i have ever watched a complete Super Bowl game from start to finish, but i have watched every WC final (if my team is in it or not) except maybe one game a few WC ago. Why?, i don't really know. Soccer is not interrupted by commercials?

And for the record, i appreciate the America version of Football.

You are trying to compare apples with oranges as we say here in the USA. The American NFL's Super Bowl is played every year of a sport only played in the USA (Canada has it's own version of American Football with it's own minor differences in rules, field size, time of year played, fewer teams and it's own Championship - The Grey Cup). The teams are based in cities, but almost all players are USA citizens or legal residents.
The World Cup is a playoff series and final played every 4 years. The rules of international Football (what we call soccer in the USA) are universial throughout the world, including where played in the USA. Teams in the World Cup are based by Nations, all their players have to be citizens of the country they play for (although their coaches are not required to be citizens of the national teams they coach for).
With that understanding, I would still say that outside the USA and throughout the world, The World Cup is much bigger overall.

The World Cup is a lot bigger. Although I'm sure that there are no "wardrobe malfunctions" during the broadcast of the WC. LOL!

But more often than not, the final score in an NFL game for either team is in the 20's or 30's.
The final score in the Bengals-Chargers game this season was 49-41, or approximately 7-6 (well, 6 touchdowns and 6 extra points would be 42 points; I assume the Bengals had two field goals in there).
Low scoring games in (American) football are the exception not the rule and are considered "close games" yet in soccer, 2-0 seems like it's considered a blow-out, while 14-0 in (American) football probably wouldn't be considered one.

The question has an obvious answer, so beyond that I only have to say what I thought was a completely laughable argument I once heard made by some supposed 'sports analyst' from the United States, which tells me the education level in his university must be equivalent to the local 3rd grade.

He said a reason football soccer was not well seen in the United States was because it was thought of as 'communist'. What was the reasoning behind that? Of course he didn't say!

But the funny thing is that in reality, American football and baseball are far MORE communist sports, as an Argentine sports commentator on TV well illustrated. Think about it: in those sports, those who become professionals have trained for years and years in only one particular position: ball thrower, blocker, kicker (in American football), or pitcher, catcher, etc.

It is literally impossible for a ball thrower, or a heavy framed blocker, or pitcher to be anything else, once they are locked into that spot. In the actual playing of the game itself, in American football, many players cannot receive the ball in a throw since it's penalized, or cannot run the ball. In Baseball, players have to stand in a single spot, and cannot move from it...

It does sound a lot like the communist way of 'lifetime employment' by directed command on what your occupation will be from the day you are born!!

As opposed to stopping the game, watching some 300 lb dude adjust his jock-strap, then get a good look at the players' bench where we focus for 30 seconds on the Gatorade bottle... and then breaking for a Ditech commercial for the 10th time since the game began.

So I'd take the Super Bowl anytime. Although I'm biased, I love football.

The World Cup, because no one outside of the US gives a sh*t about the super bowl.  duck

Maybe I am just bitter after the Seahawks got screwed in the SB (we in SEA say Referees-21, Seahawks-10), but I find the world cup more exciting. It is a much bigger world event, and the passion surrounding it is second to none, even in the States.

My two cents.

No doubt there is tons of passion surrounding the World Cup. But then there's people like me who just plain can't stand soccer, so for me it's the Super Bowl, although there's no doubt in my mind that the World Cup is more popular. During the world cup this summer I had a flag that I put on my truck at work with a soccer ball and an X through it, I think I got more honking horns than the people with real flags.

I think that when the words "Super Bowl" were coined, the only country that had TV's was the US. Now that TVs are world wide maybe soccer is bigger. But then again alot of nations talk about the Super Bowl even though they dont have teams playing. So what is bigger? Or should the question be "What has more hype".

Plus soccer is a pu$$y sport.  stirthepot

In the US and Canada, I would think the Superbowl is a much bigger (and better) event than the World Cup.

I don't know very many people that can stand watching soccer on TV. Most everyone watches the Grey Cup and Superbowl.

Very true, I was working in a very Korean area of Toronto, down by Lawrence during the world cup this summer. I was sitting there on the John Deere when a plethora of people came marching down the street, and I mean probably close to 2000 people. Apparently South Korea had just won a game, I've never seen anything like it. Waving flags and honking horns, just insane. Somewhat like what I would do if the Leafs were to win the cup.

Now, that being said, I don't know a single person who is Canadian born with Canadian or American parents who cares in the least about soccer. But with Canada's immigrant population, there's no doubt it's a big draw.

Last time the Leafs beat Ottawa in the playoffs me and a bunch of guys went out driving down Yonge with the horns going, then pulled off into a parking lot and one of my buddies spun hard right into a median and flipped his car onto the side, he was fine, funniest thing I've ever seen.

But these Koreans after they won a game in the world cup, good Lord, it scared me at first, I thought I'd died and landed in South Korea. It was actually unreal to see.

The only reason the rest of world doesn't play real football is because they're too scared to play against Americans.

Have you heard of a game called rugby???

Quoting Basas (Reply 39):
wonder if these same immigrants would have the same feelings towards Canada if our team was in the World Cup.

What feeling? In case you didn't know, Canada is made up of immigrants, be it first generation, second, or fifth...

I don't know, I sure don't think I'm an immigrant, my parents were born here, their parents weren't, but still, I was born here, parents are here, I'm just plain old Canadian. There comes a point when people need to identify with the country they live in, not the country their great grandparents or even grandparents came from. Just my .02

Screw the Vince Lombardi Trophy and screw the FIFA World Cup Trophy, this is the only sports trophy that matters:

There is no trophy with more history and stories than the Stanley Cup. Remember folks, the Stanley Cup does not float!

Whilst that may be for Soccer/Football, the same can't be said about Rugby... much tougher than American Football with all its pads and helmets and breaks every few seconds etc.

You obviously never been sacked by a 350 defensive lineman or a blitzing 250 pound middle linebacker or even tackled mid-air by a strong safety while running a fade route unprotected across the middle of the field. Come back to me when Rugby players pack that weight and bring that much speed at the same time.

I'm not saying Rugby is a wussy sport but the hits that are delivered in American Football are much more devastating than rugby and at a much higher speed. My knees and various concussions can attest to that as well as the broken arms and legs I dished out to opposing teams when I played.

That's really exciting... I think the only good thing about American Football are the cheerleaders Big grin

USER PROFILE tSEND INSTANT M

American Football has to be the worst sport to watch, all it is is a money grab, but i will agree they do seem to haev good cheerleaders, i went to a CFL game once, watched the cheerleaders for a while, and the game on the field was done, i went home. Baseball, is not much better.

n the US and Canada, I would think the Superbowl is a much bigger (and better) event than the World Cup.

This is not true, in the US i am sure you are right in Canada it is not. When the world cup was happening at the airport where i worked, everyone gathered around TV's ever one was watching, or at least knew what was going on. It was not the same for the "Super"Bowl first off i do not know what part of the year this game is played, is it happening soon or have we already had it? This i think is the biggest indication, i have always lived in Canada, born here as were my parents and I have never watched an American football game, but nor have I heard of one. Watching american TV channels you hear about them but nothing more. There is no big rush to watch the game anywhere. Another interesting note, I lived in Vancouver, and there was a poll in one of the local papers. The BC Lions who were playing in the Greycup, and just a regular season game of the struggling Canucks, who do you think people where more interested in, well it was a draw, that goes to show you the level of support American football has up here.

HAHA, I disagree, first of all you are right american football players are heivier, it is one of the few active sports (ignore darts and bowling) that being overweight/inshape is not a big deal. I know some of the players (catchers, and quarter backs) are in shape but how about the Defensive and offensive lines... in a sport such as rugby all the players are in shape, and thus not 300 ibs... The game of rugby is much tougher for a few reasons, first how much padding do you think they have? second, how much stopage in between plays do they get inorder to catch a breath or walk something off? thirdly how much faster do you thing these guys are going to be running (whilst this is the cloest ill still give the nod to rugby). Now so you think american football players are tough eh? I know hockey players wear padding, it is actually nessasary in the sport, the ice is alot harder then grass, and players are moving MUCH faster in hockey then they are in any other sports, besides cycling, speed skating etc.
Keep the shinny side up!

Already addressed that... Rugby is better than American Football. lol

Quoting Scottieprecord (Reply 37):
I'll give you that one... I've been convinced of that since I saw the Jackass episode where Johnny Knoxville went to a pro rugby team and played with them at practice... He got the sh*t kicked out of him. Haha

World cup would be much better if it was annual instead of a 4 year event.

I would rather miss the World Cup than the Super Bowl. I don't like football so much and I think the Super Bowl is more entertaining to watch.

Even so, I tend to watch both  Smile

A very important one. Rich with history.

You'd think that the St. Lawrence and it's pollution would be enough to keep it afloat.  Wink

Then let them wear a Habs or Sens jersey at a bar beside me when I'm drunk, they'll hear a lot of unkind words, they might not make sense or be in a coherent order, but the words will be there!
