Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

1) 1 yr at $16 mil, plus one more year at $16 mil Pettitte's option. Another of the vastly overpriced free agents.

2) The senior citizen starting rotation continues to add blue-hairs: Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, and now Pettitte. Five or ten years ago that trio would have been nails. Nowadays it just means the BoSox have that much better of a shot of winning the East in '07.

I'm happy to have him back, but what the Yankees really need is young pitching. Andy is 34. On the other hand, it's been proven that he can play in New York (and GET batters out  Wink ), so it might just work out.

So much for his self-proclaimed loyalty to his hometown...  Yeah sure

Yea, it's getting out of control.

The guy still has wicked struff. He doesn't have to be on all the time. He can win the yanks 12-14 games and when he wins he goes 7-9 innings (giving the shit NY bullpen some much needed rest as the season progresses) and he is left handed. He is more than good for the Yanks.

Could someone explain how or why anyone is worth this kind of money?

He is not worth that kind of money. Yesterday's team overpaying (again) for another yesterday's star.

The Tigers have plenty of young pitchers. Once they learn how to field, we will win another pennant, and then the WS, in 2007.
Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

Really. Now what will Clemens do?

I'm bittersweet about this one, though. He's a good pitcher, but saying we bring Clemens back  pray , Oswalt, Williams, Clemens, Backe, and either Hirsch, Rodriguez, or Albers?  biggrin
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Yeah, players in the latter half of their careers are washed up and useless.

Signed,
Ivan Rodriguez and Kenny Rogers.

Who knows? It might behoove the 'Stros not to pursue him and let him out to pasture. They've proven time and again that the bats can't back-up the arm. Its surreal. Clemens on mound = great pitching = no offense.

Don't forget Rickey Henderson.

He was taking a shot on Tigers Fan, since Tigers Fan took a shot on the Yankees.

As for the Yankees signing Pettite. It makes some sense due to the lack of quality pitching available, and the fact a 3rd or 4th starter can garner 10-12 million a year on this market bringing back a retread might work. However, Pettite has clearly lost a lot since he was last with the Yankees. His time in Houston was full of a whole lot of nothing. Giving this guy 16 million for one year is flat out ridiculous. When did George see the Red Sox pissing away more money than the Yankees and feel the need to get back on top of this as well?

To be fair, he did pitch over 200 innings and 30 games in both '05 and '06, and had a very good 2005 season (17-9, 2.39 ERA). There was the problem with injuries in '04, but I wouldn't call him over the hill just yet.

to leave his family for $2 mil/yr, what a sell out. I smell another Mike Hampton.

Andy goes 10-17 with a 5.06 ERA. Good riddance.

It is said that Pettite is the best when the team is competitive. World Series year = good. Last year =  vomit

Perhaps one of the three will be able to do a Kenny Rogers imitation in '07, but I can't shake the thought that Mus, the Unit, and Pettitte will be lucky to win 40 games between them next season.
