Credit Report Transfers

Thu Dec 14, 2006 6:54 pm

My young son is starting school in Phoenix (Scottsdale) next month and my wife is moving with him as he still a minor.

I need to rent an apartment for them, get phones, cable etc and also buy a car. I understand that you need a credit rating to accomplish those in US. I have excellent credit where I live now, Singapore. Is it possible to transfer a credit report from an another country to US?

Any relevant tips, advice etc would be appreciated.

Thanks and happy holidays to all !

Simple answer: No. Americans will not honor anything that is not American.

I would suggest that you contact the school and a bank in the community where he will be going to school for further advice. I am quite sure there are websites with such info as well.
Non-citizens can open and have bank accounts in the USA using other identification information including your visa. Once a bank account is established, then the other issues wouldn't be as much of an issue. You may have to pay refundable deposits for cable, utilities (electric, gas) and rental units that will usually be equal to 2 or so months of expected service to cover any possible unpaid bills. If the bills are paid on time over usually a 1 year period, then the deposit will be refunded, sometimes with a few dollars in interest.
