Tony Blair Questioned By Police

Thu Dec 14, 2006 10:51 pm

Breaking news on TV now. Not surprising that he is being questioned in the "Cash For Honours" investigation. What is surprising is that he is being questioned whilst he is still in office. It was generally expected he would be questioned after he stood down from office next year.

Well, looks like the great legacy Blair was so keen to leave us will be nothing more than sleaze, corruption, and a disastrous military adventure in the Middle East that nobody in the UK wanted!

Did Putin already offer a job to him? If not, he can ask his friend Gerhard how that works.

he might become a professional speaker, giving nice speeches at openings of homes for elderly people and of schools, or at family meetings, funerals, marriages, company celebrations, carnivals, or openings of new airline-routes.

I would like to see Mr Blair pay a visit to the family of each and every British serviceman and woman killed in Iraq, and explain to them exactly what the hell we are doing there, and what their loved one had to die for.

That's what they all do, but their fees start at 100K.Clinton receives at least 200K$$ per speech plus expenses, however, he's worth it. Schroeder not, Blair may be.

killed in Iraq

Why is any armed force in Iraq? Saddam is caught, so whats the point now? Countries sticking their nose for the wrong reason, and no reason really.

Don't be daft. Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of invasion, they're now there under UN auspices and at the request of the Iraqi government.

Back to the issue at hand: This should be massive news around the world. It's the first time a serving Prime Minister has ever been questioned as part of a police inquiry. It wasn't under caution (that would have meant he was a suspect and almost certainly forced his resignation), but it's mindblowing nevertheless.

This whole episode was treated as something of a joke to start with politicians who thought it'd be a two minute wonder. Imagine their shock at the police undertaking a full-blown criminal investigation? And look at the positive side of this: There aren't too many countries where the police would investigate the head of government while still in office. Indeed, in many countries it can't happen.

Very good point. If I recall correctly the police have been in touch with EVERY member of the 2005 Cabinet, and Tony Blair was the only person they had not spoken to. Until now. Interesting to note several political figures have actually been arrested as part of this investigation.

I imagine this will come to nothing in the end, but Blair will always have this hanging over him - the only British Prime Minister in history to be interviewed by police as part of a criminal investigation. Rather ironic as one of his original election platforms was anti-sleaze, and portraying himself as whiter than white.

I do not understand German so I'll take your word for it, but TB strikes me as a pretty effective speaker from the bit of parliamentary sessions I've seen on TV.

The Prime Minister has to be. He couldn't survive if he wasn't a consummate Parliamentary performer. It's the difference in structure between the US system and the UK one. People talk about the difference in the way Blair handles tough questioning compared to Bush, but the US President doesn't have to be brilliant at it to either get elected or stay in office, the British Prime Minister does.

Well it would have been massive news if it wasn't for the fact that the interview coincided with the day the Diana report came out. Coincedence or planned - who knows.

Seems like diana is the front page news - but i know which should be the bigger story.  Yeah sure

Oh, it's definitely been a case of using other news stories to cover it. I mean, it is it really co-incidence they waited until yesterday before including Monty Panesar in the England team?  Wink

Damn. You mean this government was even prepared to risk losing the Ashes in the most pathetic way imaginable by keeping him out until now.

Outrage. Outrage I say. Down with the government. Never mind ever higher taxes, runied pensions, poor health services - this is a national disgrace. How dare they tamper with the national sport. Time for a revolution !  mad

Lots of big stories happening at the moment. As has already been mentioned, the Diana Report was published yesterday, followed by the various news outlets wheeling out all the loons claiming its a giant conspiracy by "The Establishment" to cover up her murder.

Then of course the Suffolk murders are also headlining the news recently...

If I were cynical I would say Mr Blair's questioning by the police was deliberately timed to coincide with several other major news stories...

It's takes a lot of attention off the government when the PM was questioned by police on the same day the report into the death of Diana was published, and a serial killer is on a murder spree in Suffolk!
