2006: Your Year In Review

Mon Dec 18, 2006 8:40 am

So how was your 2006?

Like everybody, I had good and bad times.

Good:
Mr. Harlot (  couple  )
Good curling friends and going to curl in New Jersey
Visiting Mr. Harlot's family's home country of Portugal
At work, a promotion and successfully leading a very difficult project to completion
Healing from my back problems and being able to curl again
Having another year with my three dear furry children
Seeing the Pet Shop Boys in concert (another Barenaked Ladies concert too, which was excellent)
Meeting more A.nutters in April (YYZ) and August (SEA)
Managing open houses at our curling club after the Olympics (CRAZY - 1200 people in 3 weekends) and being recognized by club members for my efforts

Bad:
Herniated disc in my back (while in New Jersey, at that)
Our curling friend Sommar's death (she was 31, her first child was a week old)
Watching another friend endure his dad's death, and the death of several fellow police officers
A summer of forced leisure due to my back problem and the resulting weight gain  Sad
Wild fall weather here in Seattle, including last week's windstorm - I have never been so scared for so many hours in my life

How about you?
But that was when I ruled the world

Good:
- Got hired full-time at P&W
- Got my health going the correct direction, finally
- Went to the Staind/Three Days Grace/Soil concert in September
- Now have my own (technically, 'inherited') place
- My grandfather, who was likely days away from death after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's (wrongly... it was pain-killer induced dementia), got the knee replacement he needed, and can now move about like he was 20 years younger.
- My entire family is happy and healthy

Bad:
- Money is really tight (hospital bills, student loans)
- Can't find that special girl I met 4 years ago (when she was engaged... she never married that prick, I know for a fact)
- My friend now doesn't like to do anything that doesn't involve drinking or selling mortgages, and literally is incapable of going to any social setting without trying to do either.
- I only get to see my sister once in a while now that she lives in England
- My dad is still having issues finding full-time work
I'll rassle ya for a bowl of bacon!

RE: 2006: Your Year In Review

Mon Dec 18, 2006 10:18 am

I'm going to approach this in a different way...Rather than just list the good & bad separately, it'll be more of a timeline:

The year started out great. Received my first DSLR in late January, and I couldn't have been any happier. February rolled around, and to celebrate my mother's 50th birthday, I booked us on a seven-day Caribbean cruise for late April. Life was good.

Jumping forward to Easter Sunday...only a week to the day before the cruise was to set sail. Murphy's Law must have kicked in, because as I was playing a game with my nephew outside, I dislocated my right shoulder.  Sad Needless to say, we had to modify the shore excursion reservations on the cruise from anything requiring upper-body strength (climbing Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, swimming with the sting rays in Grand Cayman) to those less demanding. However, after some last-minute thought while onboard the ship, I made the decision that I was a strong enough swimmer with my three other extremities to complete the stingray trip safely. I was right, and it turned out to be a great trip nevertheless!  Smile (Pics on request  Wink )

May and June were relatively uneventful, other than the fact that I had limited physical capabilities at work due to the injury. July was just about the same, except I had a good deal of my strength and movement back.

August...bad news. Cutbacks at the job, I was the least senior person in my role, I had to go. That sucked. But it also showed me just how stressed out I really was, and didn't even realize it until that point. So it was good to finally get a break...

September and October were also relatively uneventful, and then came November. What better way to start the month than with a phone call from my old college roomate telling me that one of our good friends from back in school had just died in a plane crash that morning in a training accident.  crying  That hurt. But I'm sure it was nothing compared to what his family was feeling...  frown

I also got the opportunity that month to visit Fort Knox, Kentucky, to see my brother graduate from Army Basic Training.  Smile It was good to see him, and I'm sure he was even more thrilled to see us! Big grin

Finally, here we are in December. I couldn't think of a better way to finish off the year than with a call from my new employer, informing me that I had gotten the job! I've been on for a week already thus far, and I've got no complaints whatsoever (with none in sight).

All in all, it's been a rollercoaster year, and I'm hoping 2007 will be a little more tame.  crossfingers

Happy holidays!

I'd have to say that the greatest highlight was my sister's wedding in Sedona, AZ. Not only was it a beautiful wedding and time to meet my brother-in-law's wonderful family, but I also revisited Sedona for the first time since I've been in remission from chronic depression. It was like being there for the first time, because I could actually enjoy it, see and understand the beauty, feel the sun on my face, and all of the glories of it.

And I finally took the plunge into the medical field... I'm half way through the nursing program and I love it!
Up, up and away!

Are you kidding me? They should be bloody ecstatic you didn't major in Party 101 during freshman year. Unless you're another Einstein, most kids don't come back with a 4.0 freshman year. Freshman year is a stressful time for kids...adjustment to new living conditions, roommates, college-level courses, no parents around to do the cleanup/laundry etc...

I think you should be proud of your 3.33.

Thanks. Want to e-mail that entire post to my parents? haha.

They made another thread last month, before I began my final exams. They told me that if I did not come back with a 3.6 this semester (what I need to get onto the Dean's List) they will refuse to pay for me to come back and will send me to state school. I think its an atrocious threat but knowing my parents, it's completely possible.

Anyway, not to hijack the thread.

All in all 2006 has had up's and down's. I would say overall it hasn't been bad but I would like to forget about a few things.

Good:

Work is going extremely well
Trips to Miami, Los Angeles, St. Maarten, San Juan, Key West, New York, and various places in Europe etc
Got a new family car
Met some amazing people and regained friendships with people I've missed
Met a celebrity who is friends with my Dad's friend
Got it on with an old flame who is lovely

Bad:

Aunt diagnosed with Cancer
Partner left me, bitch
Garden was burgled, bikes stolen
Lost a friend due to a disagreement
Debts increased, reviewing in 2007

Probably more, but I'm not thinking straight.

Good
Getting the '59 Les Paul I've wanted since I was 14.
Adopting a new cat.
Buying a new house.
Being able to expand the business and hire 3 more people.
The business having it's best year ever and post-tax profits doubling from last year.
A fantastic holiday with the missus in England, part of which was celebrating the old man's 70th birthday.
My dead cat returning home (there's a thread around here somewhere)

Bad
Wife's last remaining grandparent passing away.
Having to fire my best programmer.
Spending several days grieving for a cat that we thought had died (but came back again, see above).

Generally, it's been a pretty good year for the IFE household.

Bad Times

-Being sick all year with endless coughs, colds and the flu
-Failing GCSE ICT (passing the rest)

If you can play your Gibson then you need to come up to Placentia and jam with us some Friday night.

Sounds interesting! What sort of stuff do you play, and where?

The Good:

-Started out the year with a really great month in New York;
-Was accepted as a patient at a pain clinic, so there won't be any further complications receiving pain medication, and they were able to take me off prednisone (this was a major accomplishment);
-Had my new doctor ask "How much valium do you want? Just tell me and I'll keep the prescription going";  bigthumbsup  (Westy loves Mother's Little Helper.)
-Discovered that a few people I'd previously considered close acquaintences turned out to be really great friends;
-Reconnected with a number of people from my past;
-Out of the blue got a great offer on my car that I wasn't using much, and it turned out to be a no-hassle sale; and
-Discovered I can function just fine without a car until I get my life rolling again (Safeway delivers!).

The Bad:

-Lost my workers' comp case due to an oversight by my attorney that was discovered too late;
-Was diagnosed with gout (ouch!); and
-Wasn't able to attend the Vegas or B'ham a.net meets.  Sad

2006 (Where did it go?)

Good

• Another year together with Mrs. Click.
• Good health.
• Financially solvent.
• My son bought a place nearby. We see a lot more of them now.
• My son and his wife are expecting. (She is pregnant, he is expecting)
• Visits and very nice phone calls from all my siblings.
• A friend for 35 years who lives two timezones away stopped by.
• Bluffed my way out of a lawsuit which I probably would have lost.

Bad

• One of my brothers died. One of the finest people I've ever known.
• His ex-wife died days later. She had introduced me to Mrs. Click
• Another brother's wife died.
• Daughter and her family moved fifty miles away.
• A couple of ill-considered business ventures. Lost a little money.

Hard to Classify

• A whole year without so much as sitting in an airplane.
• Another whole year in a single time zone.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Told my old managers where to go and what to do when they get there.
Went to San Francisco on my old job's dime.
Went to Seattle to vist a long lost friend.

GOOD THINGS:
1) Trips- lots and lots of trips Big grin
2) Attended my first and second a.net meet.
3) Met a lot of friends on this page who're becoming very special to me.
4) Finally got a job-case solved. Has taken 2 years to get anywhere with that.
5) Got a horse  Smile
6) I get out a lot more than I used to.
7) Realized what friends I should keep and who aren't really friends at all.
8) Finally finding out how many hours of work I can handle a day, and heading towards getting a job that I can manage.
9) Relationships.

BAD THINGS:
1) Health. Bwah. Should get better in 07.
2) Finding out who I can and can't trust- the harder way.
3) Looking forwards to something, then, seeing it all come crashing down more than once- not that it doesn't happen to everyone  Silly
4) Relationships  Wink

I think that's it. Then again, it's late.

Good:

- Made some fantastic friends
- Having a great time at uni, pretty much have a new lease of life as a result
- Earnt the respect of many people (have been told I'm too nice for my swearing to be taken seriously)
- Quality of spoken German has improved even more
- Finally got to San Francisco to visit Vik (WindowSeat)
- Got to Michigan to see some good friends of mine after 3 years of not seeing them.

Plus a few other, more private things.

Bad:

- Hate Heathrow and airports generally as a result of working there and working with crap people for a crap capitalist company

I actually can't think of anything else bad.

Think to look forward to in 2007:

- Fantastic ski/snowboarding trip in January with my uni's club (something which I'm part of organising...mainly the piss ups)
- Year abroad in Germany or Austria (plus one month during the summer)
- More money than I had this year, meaning I won't be worrying about paying hideous student rent etc
- Chance to visit the other side of the pond a few times to see different people

2006 has been a phenomenal year for me as well. Let's go through the list:

The good:

1) Kicked off my year by attending the SFO meet.
2) Made more money than ever before.
3) Was able to reconnect with a few important people from my past.
4) Made my first visit to Asia a few months ago.
5) Spent a month on-and-off in Miami.
6) Enjoyed more time off than ever before (but god, did I ever work for it).
7) Met a very nice and beautiful Russian girl in Miami.
8) Took a road trip to Vegas, Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon in September.
9) Logged over 73000 flight miles this year alone.
10) Met tons of new people all over the place - on and off a.net.
11) Went to more hockey games this year than ever before!
12) Paid off my car!
13) Enjoyed a glorious getaway in Hawaii.
14) Still working for United - 3+ years and going strong.
15) Celebrated my 10th anniversary of moving to the USA.
16) I am able to save money and still enjoy a rather nice lifestyle.

The bad:

1) Have not moved out just yet - roommates flaked out on me.
2) I am burned out from working so many hours on the ramp.
3) I need a long relaxing vacation.
4) I need to self-improve.
5) The girl situation is uncertain. Can't say it's too bad.
6) I need to travel more.

That's about it.

Alex.

RE: 2006: Your Year In Review

2006 has also been amazingly good for me:

Good
- Continued success in my Master's Degree program at Seattle University. Switched to the Int'l. Business program also. I now have a 3.54 average and am almost half completed.
- Went to Italy for vacation, and then a study tour in Tuscany for my degree program. Vacation included Rome, Florence, Sorrento, Mt. Vesuvius, and 5 AMAZING days on the Cinque Terre, and a short side trip to Portofino.
- Flew on a new airline to me (US Airways), flew through PHL and FCO for the first time, and flew on an Airbus A330. Also sat in Envoy Sleeper Class (1H) on the FCO-PHL flight, and also got to visit/sit in the Captain's seat of the A330.
- Experienced only the 2nd perfect landing of my life, on US Airways #2, PHL-FCO.
- Sold my townhouse in Everett, WA and moved in with a friend for a month, then moved into my new larger townhouse in Mill Creek, WA (a few miles away from the old place) in late July on the hottest day of the year.
- Finally bought a component stereo system after waiting many, many years. I got an NAD integrated amplifier, CD player, and Image 25 speakers.
- Discovered the music of Pink Floyd: favorite albums are "Wish You Were Here", "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Meddle. I have "Animals", "The Wall" and "Obscured by Clouds".
- Turned 33 in early July, and spent the day in Central Oregon, where I love it.
- Joined the eBay craze, and have won some CD's at great prices and just started selling as well.
- Bought a Creative Zen in February, dropped/broke it in July, and replaced it in November.
- Met my girlfriend Becky in October. We really click together, and are taking things slowly, but we really like one another and I think I may have finally met the right girl for me.
- Surprised my grandmother on her 90th birthday last month with a party.
- Spending a week with my parents in Oregon at Christmas.
- Have seen approximately a 13-15% increase in my 401k and IRA, and currently have about $55k total, not bad for 33!

Bad
- Found out my job at Washington Mutual Bank was going to be eliminated on 12/15/06. This is actually good in a way, as I never fit into the "big bank" culture. I'm unemployed right now, but have several leads.
- Almost lost my grandfather in early September, and found out after I got home from Italy (well, actually at PHL after clearning customs) He hasn't been well, and had a pacemaker installed before then, but he's much better now.
- Still struggling with my weight.
