Any A.Neters From The D.C. Area?

Mon Dec 18, 2006 12:29 pm

Hey guys, I was browsing the forums and saw what a huge response the A.Neters from Chicagoland thread got so I figured why not try one for the Washington D.C. area. So where are you checking in from?

Checking in from Alexandria,VA

Falls Church is pretty nice. I just stayed with my buddy for a long weekend in Reston, VA. It's about 5 miles east of IAD.

Relative to DC in the regional sense, I have no business in this thread.

Relative to DC in the global sense, Chesapeake, VA - about 200 miles away.

I live 30 miles south of IAD. I get all of the traffic inbound to 1R and 1L coming from the south. Every morning when I go to work, I see one of UA's 767's from Brazil low and slow.

When the traffic is bad, ATC sometimes routes the heavies from Europe down our way.

Yeah, there are a few, but none quite as up-close as Gravelly Point. My favorite is the top of the Daily 2 Parking Garage.

Hey united767,
York, Pa here. About 2 hours from DC. Not really "local" but have spent some quality time at Gravelly Point. Was just down at IAD on Sunday. Went to the museum to pick up some aviation themed Christmas gifts for Jr. (and myself, of course)

Did some spotting from the museum parking lot. Unfortunatly, traffic was departing from 19L, and 30. Arrivals were using 19R, so not too many good photo ops. But, an enjoyable day, just the same. My holiday schedule doesn't permit another trip to DC over the break, but anytime you fell like going down, let me know, and I'll see if it's doable. Maybe me and Oldman55 can carpool!

Have a great Holiday!

You have a great holiday as well! Mabey we can all set up some spotting time at Gravely Point in the spring when it gets a little warmer. Just an idea.

I'll stick with the much-maligned I-95, thank you. At least the HOV lanes move.

Ugh! that whole road...as well as the entire section of 495 between Tysons corner and the American Legion Bridge... (MD/VA border)..... always full of traffic. Not surprisingly... DC was rated as having the worst roads/traffic in the country by an article in Car and Driver magazine.....

I was born and raised in SoCal, and learned to drive in that traffic. Having lived in the DC area for the past 15 years, I can agree with Car and Driver. Our roads here suck big time.

Even though VDOT is on the verge of completing a major reconstruction of the busiest interstate intersection in the country, all they will have succeeded in doing is moving the daily I-95 bottleneck down the road a few miles. What we need are more lanes and more mass transit options, and neither are in the pipeline.

It seems that people keep moving south. The Fredericksburg area seems to be growing alot faster than it can handle. The housing prices there are outrageous. I think there should at least be 5 lanes on both sides of 95 from Fredericksburg to Dumfries where the HOV lanes start. From there on though, I don't think there is much room to expand, or there would be 2 HOV lanes going in both ways at the same time instead of 1 at a time. I don't imagine the Springfield/Woodrow Wilson construction really takes into account the growth the area is going to have. With what they have gotton completed with the Springfield interchange, it does seem to help, for now.

VDOT has plans to add a fourth lane from Springfield to the Occoquan - there is room. No plans yet for a fourth lane each way south to Fredericksburg that I know of, but it is desperately needed. There is room...

Quite well. The northbound 95 flyovers to the inner and outer loops of the beltways are in operation, and they are just about ready to open the new lanes for the outer loop to SB 95. SB beltway to 95 flyovers have been in operation for a while. Still working on the connector from the outer loop to NB 395. If nothing else, the days of a jackknifed big rig shutting down the entire intersection should be over.

When it was planned, we were warned by the gloom and doom folks that the next 7 years would be a commuting nightmare. But it wasn't - at least very little could be blamed on VDOT, which has done a magnificent job in rebuilding a huge intersection while encountering massive traffic loads.
