Why Don't People Respect Fast Lane Anymore?

Wed Dec 20, 2006 5:39 pm

In the last two days, I have driven more than 350 miles for work related meetings. I only live 2 miles away from work, so I usually can't stand traffic. But I have noticed this getting worse as the years go by and is something that I absolutely HATE about California.

Is the g**damned people who drive in the faster lanes at slow lane speeds!!!  banghead

I mean, here in SMF, it is FASTER to drive in the slow lane during rush hour! I mean, WTF? And some are driving slow in the slow lane, and then shift to faster lanes! Or you have 3 cars lined up on 3 lanes going at the same speed...

So, I confirmed it with a guy from Indiana today, that here in California there is hardly any respect for driving FAST in the FAST lane.

Rant off...

Find the same thing here in Ontario. One province where the fast lane is respected is Quebec, they know how to drive well. Down the highway 401 here on a trek that I make routinely I find people going side by side at the same speed, quite annoying, I'll normally flash the high beams until they get the picture.

We usually only have 2 lanes in Switzerland, and we have the exact same problem: people drive slow in the fast lane and vice-versa. Maybe people think that driving slow in the fast lane gets you there quicker  Smile

Same thing in S. FLA. If there's a good gap, a good bet is that the person slowing things down is yakking away on their cel phone. You flash your lights so they can move over and they give you the Hawaiian Good Luck Sign (You're Number 1).

That is really a Northern California problem.
Go down to LA and drivers fully respect the fast line. If you go any slower than 85 on any unclogged SoCal freeway, you WILL get ran in to the center divider or rear-ended.

As far as Indiana goes (my homestate), it's illegal to stay in the fast lane. It's called a 'passing lane' so nimrods like the drivers out here don't form these slow moving road blocks.

Dude, you're joking, right?

I'm so f***ing glad I never had a car when I was in LA. I probably would have started running people off the road out of sheer rage. All the blond-haired soccer moms in their friggin Expeditions don't have a friggin clue. I swear, they are all unaware that there are actually other cars on the freeway.

Road lane disipline is very low in the USA in general. The left or far left lane is for passing per law. I have driven in the UK on their motorways and found they follow this law (in their case the fast lane is the right/far right lane).
In reality, on a 3x3 divided M-way in the UK, I found that slow lane was for trucks (lorryies), vehicles towing trailers (like caravans, utility), those with small vehicles, wanted to drive at or below the speed limit or about to exit the motorway. The center lane were mostly those driving at or slightly above the speed limit. The fast lane was for those passing those in the center lane and/or generally diving over the speed limit. I only wish USA drivers (I live and mostly drive in the New Jersey - Metro NY City area).

I mean, here in SMF

Sacramento is something of an anomaly, even in California. It probably has the greatest variance between the faster cars and the slower ones of any place I've driven. I've seen people cruise right past CHP on I-80 doing 80 or better, but you see a percentage of the cars doing 60-65. Every time I drive through Sac I see a pair of ricers averaging a hundred or better, going from the diamond lane all the way to the exit lanes, back and forth getting around slower (80-85mph) traffic.

When he was 16 my son got a ticket and I went to juvie traffic court with him. I was expecting the judge to scold him and maybe show him dead-teenagers pictures. Instead the judge minimized his offense, completely trivializing a 16 year old with thirty minutes' driving experience doing 75 mph on a city street. I was furious. Anyway, the judge told him about driving into Sacramento on I-80 and being passed (he was doing 80) by a woman READING A BOOK. Not a glance at a map or something, she was reading a Danielle Steele paperback!

I prefer to use the fast lane only as a passing lane but it is just not practical. Around Reno the acceleration lanes at the various interchanges are far too short or blend right into an offramp in about 300 yards. It just becomes necessary to drive in the fast lane to allow cars onto the freeway at all.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 12):

One of the few good things about "Exodus - Phase II, the evacuation of California by business and professional people" is that they are crashing their cars in record numbers. In the light snowfall of last weekend there may have been as many as a thousand fender-benders on the streets of Reno, almost all involving people who moved here from California last summer, many still had their California plates and were ticketed for that. Fifty on one uphill stretch of city street in one evening. Bad news is these morons will run MY insurance rates up.

I drove about three hours across Texas a few days ago, and people do the same thing here. A few cars I noticed would not budge from the left lane for anything. I seriously think people just don't know that the left lane is for passing.

That, and the fact that a lot of the folks that do know it's for passing will STILL stay out there, and sometimes even speed up when you try to move around them on the right..... it's plain and simple lack of courtesy and manners.

I have found recently that people don't care how they drive.

The last couple of days it has been really foggy here, and the amount of people who are not driving with their headlights on. My mum flashed her lights at someone yesterday because they hadn't got their lights on... and she braked  Yeah sure

And also the ammount of people who sit in the fast lane after overtaking and don't go over and there is nothing in front of them.

The problem is that NOBODY has any respect for lane laws. Take a drive anywhere along the 5, 405, 605, 57, 55, 91, 60, 10, or 210, and count how many people lane weave. Not because people are going slow, but because they are impatient.

Example - I was passing two trucks and a slow car in the fast lane the other day. I was doing about 75mph on a 3-lane part of the 5 between Buena Park and Norwalk - a 55mph zone - and was in the 'Fast' lane. Yet, even at that speed, and even with me clearly passing vehicle in the 2 lanes to my right, some punk decided to ride about 6 feet from my bumper, then went lane weaving over the carpool lane and right back in front of me again, all because he didn't want to wait 5 seconds for me to finish passing and pull over to the right.

This happens all the time. Especially with many...how shall I say...non-natives who are from countries where driving is pretty much ruthless (and the insurance demographic reflects this). Nobody respects the rules of the road, and part of that is the lane hogging epidemic.

Yep...it boils down to 2 things..DRIVER TRAINING and ENFORCEMENT of existing laws...here is a thought, do what the German police do..fine the heck out of the offenders. Once the State discovers how much of a revenue enhancer this could be..and they would make tons of $...the left lane would be wide open most of the time. How many times have you folks seen a person poking along in the left lane and a state trooper a few car lenghts away not enforcing the "Delay Of 5 Vehicles" signage?

Cheers...

In the Uk destricted roads have 60mph (1 lane) and 70mph (2 lanes) limits.

But this system seems to confuse 65-70% of people, as they all drive at 60mph in the outside lane of derestricted roads, and 50mph on even straight 1 lane roads.

I think maybe because motorways have a 70mph limit, some people have this "10mph below" thing in their heads.

It's especially annoying when these people won't move over, and only check their mirror every 10 miles.

The route I drive on frequently has patrol cars on it, which always drive at 55mph, to let people overtake without worrying about getting pulled over, but you still get people in BOTH lanes who will not overtake the patrol car, which creates a roadblock, even though they see others overtaking at 70mph.

Yup it's true. For the most part, there are only two grades of drivers here in SoCal:

One is slow and clueless (think Soccer moms, illegal aliens, cripples, Asians, and folks with one foot in the grave).

The other is fast and reckless (pretty much every one else).

I don't think it's a coincidence that there is a brake and tire shop on every corner. Everyone in the second group drives in the following manner: floor the accelerator....lock up the brakes and screech the tires.....floor the accelerator...lock up the brakes and screech the tires....floor the accelerator.....

You can see this behavior on any freeway offramp. Traffic will be moving along at a brisk 15 mph. Someone will exit. They will take it up to about 60 only to again lock the brakes in a cloud of blue smoke caused by the screeching tires as they try to avoid blowing through the red light at the end of the offramp that is maybe a 10th of a mile from where they were going 15 mph.

I don't get it. I just don't.

Strangely, it's usually faster in Ontario to drive the speed limit in the right hand lane, rather than fight the slow pokes and brake Nazi's in the left lane.

I always go by the common sense rule of: If the lane to your right is vacant, why aren't you in it? (reversed of course in UK etc).

Good rule. If I'm gonna be able to cruise in the lane to my right for more than, say, 10 seconds (estimating), without having to pass someone, I'll switch into it. Or if someone really wants to pass me. For some people, though, even 10 seconds is too long to wait. MUST GO FASTER NOW!!! It's pretty stupid, really.

I-80 is just a few years behind 50, it is going downhill fast. In Roseville, it narrows to just 3 lanes for about half a mile, something CalTrans was supposed to widen years ago, but for some reason never did. Typical. Now, adding a 4th lane won't even be enough. The one that I really believe has gone down the shitter is 99. If there is the slightest accident or build up of traffic, it is toast. Especially up north near the airport.

As for drivers, pretty much all that can be said has been said. It's really too bad.

Try driving on the higways here in Arizona...expecially in PHX and Scottsdale (Loop 101). People have ZERO respect for the road, hence as to why its the crash capitol of the world, high auto insurance rates....go figure!

There is a legal issue going on between the State of Arizona and Scottsdale about posting traffic cameras on Loop 101. The state admired the idea, but ended up not liking it due to the profits were benefiting the Scottsdale Police rather than the state. Loop 101 is a STATE HIGHWAY, not a city highway and it boils down to that. Currently the cameras are shut off.

People have been speeding 102 to 144 MPH through that one particular zone. Several people have been arrested as a result of it, not just for the excessive speeding (above 86 MPH in this state is considered criminal speeding). I never drive down Loop 101 anyway, but I do drive down the new Loop 202 to go to school on a daily basis. I cannot believe how people drive. Im cut off on a daily basis. We need more DPS officers on the freeways, not cameras.

I liked how things were in WA State when I was living there...born and raised. I'll be home in 3 days for Christmas! Yippee!!

Edit add: I got this 45 year old chick from Iran in my A&P class. She thinks that speed limit 65 means you cannot go slower than 65mph and there is no maximum limit. I keep telling her shes kinda corret in the former, but incorrect on the latter. Then she goes off telling the class how parts of PHX is 100% crime free. Go figure!  sarcastic  banghead

I'm definitely not the poster boy for that comment, but I'll tell you this.....I knew I would be able to handle driving anywhere when, on the night of my first driving lesson when I was around 16 my California Driving School instructor came tooling up to my house in a dual-steering wheel car, put my on the driver's seat, he took the passenger seat, he drove us down to the San Bernardino Freeway at 5:00pm, got us onto the freeway, then said "it's all yours".

Not that I'm a great driver, because I'm not, but I'm here to tell you.....we got our share of out-of-control drivers down here in New Orleans, the main difference here being: no one uses their blinker before they cut in front of you. At least in LA, they blinker you before they cut you off.

As for the place I hate to drive the most.....gotta be the Stemmons Freeway in Dallas. Everybody, and I mean everybody drives 85 down that freeway.
