Maybe it is my American influences, but Stadio Olimpico irritates me!
Would it be a fair statement to say England, Germany, and Spain could teach Italy a thing or two in constructing a fan friendly pitch?
I guess the part I dislike the most, is the European (Italy) habit of putting a track field between the stands and the pitch...so at Olimpico for example, if you sit down low, the view is just terrible. It seems to be this way at most places I've visited.
Don't get me wrong, not all football stadia in Italy are bad, San Siro is fantastic, if one lives up there, but Stadio delle Alpi is awful! (Juventus)
My usual, Cagliari Sant'elia has be the worst! Again, that stupid track around the pitch, in my opinion, makes almost half the seats worthless - might as well stay home and watch it on television!!!!
Why does Italy have such mediocre facilities, when the sport is so popular?
I have heard, that on the Continent, Hamburger SV AOL Arena, and Koln FC are maybe the best.....but the best places to enjoy a match are still to be found in the UK. (Just my opinion, based on visits to CellNet-M'Brough, City of Man, Coventry-Ricoh, Derby-County, and the grandest of them all: Villa Park)
And then there is Madrid, that place is brilliant! And HUGE! (Doesn't hurt that there is a TGI Fridays just outside!)
Find my butt in Dortmund frequently, but refuse to see a match there....Too big, too far from the pitch....kind of like Berlin.
What's the consensus of the best Football stadium in Europe? (UK/Ireland included...as well as Poland, Finland, Turkey, those places most people don't think about.)
Would it be worth it for a football stadium junky like myself to go there and visit? The only places I can think of would be Luzhniki and Dinamo....but are there any others? Zvezda? (Not the A.Net user, but the Perm stadia!)
And before you send out your flamethrowers, consider I'm an ex-Pat from the USA, and have only just recently, in the past 2 years begun to embrace World Football as superior to the North American version....more of a rugby rip off, with helmets. To be honest, I think I am possibly addicted! I'll watch anything at this point, whether or not I have any interest in the sides involved.
What are considered by the experts as the best and worst? Maybe not in Europe as a whole, but maybe best and worst/nation by nation?
If you had to select ONE Stadium for the rest of your life, which one would it be....regardless if it is the home pitch for your side...Try an be objective!
(Well, there I go again, inflicting a painful prolixity on you folks just to squeeze out an answer!! Please accept my apologies for this horrible novel!! Forgive me, I have a lot of time to make up for...considering not even 5 years ago I could not care any less about European Football!)
And while we're at it, can ANYONE explain "off-sides"? I have tried to wrap my head around it but to no avail
