Utility Co. BS

Fri Dec 22, 2006 5:45 am

So, when folks decide not to pay their own bills, I have to pick up the tab?

This is BS of the first order!

Unpaid bills will cost MichCon consumers 55 cents a month

Residential customers of Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. will have to pay a monthly surcharge averaging 55 cents to account for the company’s uncollectible expenses.

The Michigan Public Service Commission approved the surcharge for MichCon, a unit of DTE Energy, to be effective Jan. 1. The annual amount of uncollectible expenses reported by MichCon total $37.3 million for 2005.

Uncollectible expenses are monies that a utility is unable to recoup from customers who fail to pay their bills.

So, you pay uninsured motorist insurance, right? The price of everything you buy includes a surcharge for theft (shrinkage). Your utility is just telling you what it's costing you when your neighbors fail to pay.
When seconds count...the police are minutes away.

You think 55 cents is bad. The Florida legislature just approved an 8% surcharge (on top of the existing 2% surcharge) on all property insurance coverage in the state to cover the losses of bankrupt insurance companies.

Therefore the people who chose to go with el'cheapo insurance instead of one of the more reputable and more expensive insurers get their cake and to eat it too. The pay lower premiums up front and get their fellow Floridians to make sure they get 100% of the benefits their fly by night insurance company promised them.

Responsible homeowners paid higher rates up front to insure with State Farm, AllState, Travellers, etc . . . and now take it up the a$$ again to subsidize those who CHOSE the cheaper policy. Where's the personal responsibility there? Every day we slip a bit closer to socialism in this country.

I have no problem with anyone choosing whichever insurance company they want but you get what you pay for. Don't ask me to subsidize your crappy insurer OR to help subsidize the insurance premium on your ocean front condo. If the insurance is too much for you to stomach, move elsewhere but if I don't have the million dollar view, I should have to help it make it affordable for you.
Hypocrisy. It's the new black for liberals.
