I Hate Mary Poppins

Sun Dec 24, 2006 9:17 am

For years, I've felt intense hatred toward the Mary Poppins movie, but I couldn't put my finger on why. So, while channel surfing, I came across it on ABC Family Channel. Then it hit me. It's Dick Van Dyke's horseshit fake Cockney accent! It's so bad that it's embarrassing.

How the hell could the director allow him to do something so f*cking awful?

The Swedish version is pretty good, though.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Wasn't Dick Van Dyke nominated for an Oscar for his role in that.

So he has a fake accent. Kevin Costner didn't even try to sound like he was from the Isles in "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves."  Big grin

IIRC, the Dick Van Dyke accent was so bad, he was told not to even attempt it when he landed a role in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

MARY POPPINS!!!! MARY BLOODY POPPINS!!!!!!Don't talk to me about Mary POPPINS!!!

I have a son who is now 22. From the time he was 3 until he was 6 he watched THAT BLOODY MOVIE EVERY SINGLE DAY, at least once and sometimes over and over  banghead

He literally wore out three copies of the beata tape and one set of vcr heads doing it. On the other hand he sings pretty well and plays a musical instrument very well, so I suppose we cant complaine too much.

But I am so sick of THAT MOVIE!!!

This is what you spend your time on? A grown man, criticising one of the all time best children's movies? I'm not a betting man, but I think it's safe to say, 99.9% of kids could care less about an accent when viewing the classic Disney film.

What a waste of bandwidith. ??

As a kid I really loathed the film with a passion, and every Christmas for years it was played, and every year I would find something to do so I could avoid watching it. That feeling has stuck with me as an adult.

FWIW: "Poppins" has made the transition from film to stage, first in London and now in New York.

http://disney.go.com/theatre/marypoppins/

Has anyone seen the stage version?

Edit: To keep this post on topic... Apparently P.L. Travers, author of the "Poppins" books, didn't care much for the movie either....

THAT BLOODY MOVIE EVERY SINGLE DAY

When the movie first came out my sister got the soundtrack on an LP. (That's a long playing record for the youngsters.) She put it on her little record player in her bedroom set so it would play the side over and over again.

I got tired of it, and then sick of it. It became an issue in the house. I'm sure there is a part of my brain that is seared with those songs.

I thought then that I'd never be able to laugh about it, but now I do get a chuckle.

Without a doubt "Poppins" was Disney Studios crowning achievement. I think the only thing they've done in the meantime that even comes close is "Beauty and the Beast".

Says a lot that many of those complaining about the film here are doing so because they saw (or heard) too much of it.

Dick Van Dyke's dire attempt at a cockney accent is the paradigm for terrible film accents over here. It's THE worst attempt at an English accent of some description. Ever.

If memory serves, at the start of the film he also lands near Hadrian's Wall, then goes to Nottingham via London too - which is certainly an interesting route!

And not forgetting all those mid-nineteenth century set films about London that highlight a Tower Bridge not yet built, or Krakatoa East of Java (it's west). Ah, the movies....  Wink

I like the The Sound of Music much more than Mary Poppins'. Infact I can't stand Mary Poppins'. I like the Captain Von Trapp character in the sound of music. If it wasn't for the singing in the movie I would like it.

Quoting AsstChiefMark (Thread starter):

In the sound of music there is a bit of bad accent too. You have to have a dirty mind to pick it up, but it is there. After Maria goes back to the convent and is talking with the Reverend Mother about what she can not face in the world a bit of bad accent pops up. The reverend mother asks Maria "What is it you Cun't face? I always laugh when I hear that part. I was watching it with my parents the other night I pointed it out to them and they got a laugh too.

Maybe they could make a new version of Mary Poppins in put in some Nazis. They are the perfect bad guys. Imagine Mary Poppin's verse the Third Reich!

Don't get me started on Nazis speaking English. Do they expect us to believe they really spoke English? The right thing to do is have them speak German and add English subtitles.

Then there's blue-eyed, fair-haired Jesus Christs that speak English, but that's for another time.

One thing that Hollywood has taught us is that all people speak English when they are alone and begin speaking their own language when they are around Americans.  Silly

This isn't just US films. I have seen Russian, German, and Spanish films where everyone is speaking the same language even when they probably wouldn't be.

Her accent was actually quite good: it wasn't the awful stage-Irish accent usually associated with Hollywood, with John Wayne ("The Quiet Man") and Tom Cruise ("Far and Away") probably being the worst offenders.

Kate Hudson got it spot-on in "About Adam". I hadn't heard of her before that film and actually thought she was an up-and-coming Irish actress (or is it "actor" now?). Chris O Donnell was also spot-on in "Circle of Friends".
