For Car Buffs: Tranny Problem...

Sun Dec 24, 2006 4:04 pm

As i was stopped at a stop sign in Drive(Automatic), when i pressed the gas, the car just revved up. No movement or anything. The same thing happens in reverse or gears 3,2,L. The car acts as its in neutral since it can be pushed while still in "gear". Park is park tho, no movement there. I do hear a tappig noise, but im not sure if its the tranny, or me being paranoid.

Anyone have any ideas what it may be. Do i need a new transmission, or is it a gear alignment problem.

If it helps its an 01 Sebring V6 3.0 and its ether a dodge tranny or a mitsubishi one

I remember many years ago when that happened in my mum's Ford Granada the ATF was low, I topped it up and it was fine.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

G'day MNeo,

The first thing to check for is that the automatic transmission fluid is at the right level. An automatic transmission uses oil not only for lubrication, but as a hydraulic fluid to make and transmit pressure to operate the internal clutches and bands. Also make sure that the fluid level in the torque converter is adequate if this is separate to the transmission fluid.

If the fluid levels are low, you will not get enough hydraulic pressure to operate the transmission. You may also cause damage due to inadequate lubrication. The park function should still work, as this mechanically locks the transmission, and does not rely of hydraulic pressure to operate.

An automatic transmission uses combinations of what is known as a planetary (epicyclic) gear-set, which has all the gear elements in constant mesh, so gear misalignment is unlikely to be the problem. The bands and clutches hold various elements of the planetary gear-set stationary to achieve various gear ratios.
