Have You Had Your Tonsils Taken Out?

Mon Dec 25, 2006 10:46 am

Hey, here's my question. I always get strep throat, maybe 4 or 5 times a year, so my doctor told me I should think about getting them out.

Wondering what the procedure is, how long it takes, time spent in the hospital, and how much time off of work i'll need.

I'd greaty appreciate it. (I'd say Merry Christmas but this thread would probably get locked too.)

Had them taken out in 1998. Missed one of the most important matches my soccer club played in years (but got it on tv instead). Altogether maybe a week in hospital.

A friend of mine gave me a variety selection of magazines, which I read front to back - all of them. Including "Playboy." If anybody ever tells you that they read "Playboy" for the articles or interviews, they're lying!!! Dead boring stuff. The pictures weren't too bad though. Maybe NOA_people though.

Anyways.... I used to have tonsillitis about 4 or 5 times a year. Ever since I got rid of them, I only suffer from a massively sore throat once every time I get into a cold climate. Vast improvement.

Merry Xmas.

Good call, the older you get the worse it is . . . .

Do it as soon as you can, if they are presenting a problem.

Reason #1: My ex-wife (#2 - and I don't wanna hear it  wink  ), kept hers and had, as do you, strep, three four, five times a year. Finally, the doc says the tonsils have to go. Should have been an hour in surgery. Turned in to five. Complications getting them out.

Note she's never had strep since.

Reason #2: Ft. Hood TX, 1979, I hadn't had mine out. Always getting a sore throat. I go to have them removed and the docs find a tumor growing on one . . . said I should have had them removed long time ago, would have saved me ten days in Darnall Army Hospital . . .

No complications, in and out in a 24 hours . . .

Get to it troop.  wink

FutureSDPD -- get the things ripped out. I waited until I was 22 and there was a lot of infection to be cleaned out of cavities that had built up over time. Recovery was not that easy -- the pain was pretty intense during the first week. But like TransIsland it was a vast improvement. And be aware that these infections drift around in your system and have the possibility of causinng heart valve damage amongst other maladies. Go up to Pill Hill and let the boys at Mercy do the work.

I had mine out at age 29.......
I went into the hospital in the morning and was home by 5pm. The doctor wanted me to stay overnight but the insurance company said no way.

I was in bed for a few days with some good pain medicine. Actual procedure is not long at all. The older you are the higher the chance of complications. But overall it is a safe procedure.

No strep or sore throats since. It was worth it.

Good luck...

Yeah you could drive home, after a night in the hospital to let the anaesthesia wear off.

Mine were taken out when I was 5 so its different as a kid then an adult. But my friend just had his out 3 weeks ago. He had a bad raction to the meds but other then that took him a week to get back to his normal thing. First couple of days he was miserable. Make sure you can take Vicadin and things of this nature.

I discussed this a year ago with my doctor rather thoroughly as mines in a way are crap. But he told me that he only would favour to have them taken out if really necessary and required in case of REAL problems. He told me that it in the 1950ies/60ies/70ies had been "in fashion" to take them out, but that they in fact have some REAL functions. He compared it with the haemorrhoids which also were readily removed in the past while also having some functions. The answer to your question from MY side would be a clear NO --- and that in spite of the procedure being short with one or two days in hospital only .

Well isn't that just a whole lot of information I didn't really want to know about on Christmas morning  Wink

I had mine out, went into the hospital around breakfast and was out by dinner, most of that time was spent in the lobby waiting for a ride home (I didn't have a car). Just get them out, simple operation, well worth it, I haven't had strep in a long time.

I had them removed in 1994 when I was three years old. It was my birthday present. I don't remember it at all....though maybe that's a good thing. Not a fun present but probably worth it.

People in this thread have been talking about strep throat, and right above the posting area there is an ad about strep throat and natural cures. Hmmm  scratchchin

You should absolutely have them out. An increasing reliance on anti-biotics to flight strep throat throughout the 1980s and 1990s is one of the main reasons for all the anti-biotic resistant bacteria and alergies to the drugs we are seeing now. I had mine out in 5th grade, only after they found a massive peritonsillar absess on one of them and I developed juvenile osteoperosis because of the strep. This was a couple years after my pediatricians convinced my parents to just keep using anti-biotics even after I had 9 strep throats in 1 year. Pull them.

Total agreement. Then again, that even applies to the young. I was 10 when mine came out and the 6 year old sharing the room with me was in a lot better shape than I was.

You may not believe this, but I was actually born without tonsils. At the age of three, I had tonsils, recovered from a donor, implanted.

Had mine taken out earlier this year at age 45 and it wasn't nearly as bad as everybody was telling me it was gonna be. Went under at about 10am, woke up about 2:30pm and was heading home at 4pm. They will give you a prescription for liquid pain killer and make absolutely sure you have this filled at the hospital pharmacy before you leave because you must stay on the regular every 4 hour schedule. For the first 24 hours, the only thing I consumed was iced orange Gatorade. After that, started adding some chicken broth and soft bread. Within a couple days was eating shredded chicken and macaroni and cheese. After 2 weeks, I was back to nearly normal eating except obviously no tacos or chips with sharp edges. I was on a leave of absence from work so was in no rush to get back, but would think a week off work would be plenty; maybe get it done on a Wednesday and you should be back at work the following Monday. My throat never really hurt that much and I was off the pain killer after about 3-4 days, but you do feel the scabs forming and they are a little annoying when you swallow. I could talk perfectly normal, although quieter than usual, after about the 3rd day.

Like you I was always getting strep throat, sinus infections you name it. Since April when I had it done, I have had 1 cold and as a test I never went to the doctor or took any antibiotics. After a few days I felt better and within a week it cured itself. This would have never happened before and would have turned into a full blown sinus infection. For me, I think removing the tonsils has been a big help and I feel much better.

I had mine out when I was 6. I don't remember much about it, but I know it was no big deal.

As for strep and the like, I don't get strep, and one flu shot per year keeps me fairly healthy.

Good luck, feel better. You'll be better off without them!

those are often referred to as egetations. Its lymph nodes just as the tonsils that are located on the upper respiratory tract behind the nose. They are usually removed at early childood

To add to RootsAir's answer about adenoids, they are usually removed at the same time tonsils are, as they are usually infected too and it is much easier to remove them both at the same time.

I wish I could get mine out...sore throats are almost commonplace in my life, but whenever I mention getting my tonsils out to a doctor, I'm looked at as if I was asking for something that was done during the Dark Ages. Then again, it could be because I'm overweight, and my doctor thinks that I might overdo it with ice cream...

As with other organs of the lymphatic system, the tonsils and adenoids act as part of the immune system to help protect against infection. In particular, they are believed to be involved in helping fight off pharyngeal and upper respiratory tract infections. That's why they are not automatically removed when one has troubles with them .

thanks. Think it was something like that my doctor mentioned, it must be some 4 years ago. I do NOT have REAL problems generally, but they apparently are not in a splendid shape, so that surgery might become inavoidable possibly, but apparently a good chance that it will stay as it is.

Had mine taken out back in 1982.

Don't recall much of it though. IIRC I stayed in hospital 3-4 days afterwards. What I do recall is waking up with a severely sore throat  Smile

Tonsillectomies are outpatient procedures. It will be done at an ambulatory surgery center or a regular hospital. They will do the procedure and move you to an area called the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). A nurse will ensure that you aren't having any problems with recovering from the anesthesia. Then, you will have to have someone drive you home.

I had mine removed when I was 3 along with my adnoids. I like most people kept getting strep throat and ear infections. I have not had either since then

It was an out patient procedure and I was put on a diet of ice cream and jello for a few days.

Yup! About 55 years ago. One of only two stays in a hospital in my life. My mother had hers out at the same time. She thought she'd die! I ate potato chips as soon as I got home. Do it early.

Sore throat - very rare event. When I'm getting a cold I'm more likely to feel it first up in my eustachian tubes. Wish I could do something about that.

I also had mine removed at around 4 years old. Strangely I can also remember quite vividly the hospital experience including the ice cream after the surgery.

My parents told me that this was a very common operation for kids to go through back in the early 70's and this was why they had honoured me with the surgery. Aparently it was not because I had tonsilitis or infections.  Yeah sure

I'm glad they had the operating table the right way around  Big grin

I had mine removed way back in 1973. IIRC I was in hospital for 3-4 days, living on ice cream, tomato soup and orange ice lollies (popsicles for the US contingent of A.net!)

I remember the lollies and tomato soup annoying my throat even more than it was already

I understand they now try to avoid removing tonsils from young children. I don't know if my case was severe, or if it just wasn't a big deal back then.
