PS3/BluRay Or XBox 360/HDDVD?

Tue Dec 26, 2006 5:04 pm

I will be buying myself a (late) Christmas present, and am looking at HD gaming systems. I am not a die-hard gamer, but I do enjoy a couple of games and would probably use it every now and then. What I think I would use much more is the HD capabilities to watch movies.

My TV is a 60" HD Panasonic LCD. I currently have a Samsung DVD player which upconverts standard DVD's to 1080I (not TRUE 1080, but much better than standard DVD resolution).

I was at Ovation a couple days ago (an upper-end audio/video store in my area), and saw a Blu-Ray demo on a 60" HD screen - and it was jaw-dropping.

So my question is - do I buy a PS3, or an Xbox 360 and the HD-DVD drive? Which is better - Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

While looking over the games at Best Buy, I noticed one PS3 game specifically said "True 1080P Resolution!!" on it (I think it was NBA 2007). Does that mean some PS3 games are NOT in "full 1080P"?

Right now I'm leaning towards the PS3, but I thought I'd get the opinions of some die-hard gamers / home theatre folks out there.

Thanks!  bigthumbsup

Well, that's always the option when you're lucky enough to have more money than sense.  Wink

PS3 has a blu-ray drive built in so no need for a second system.

Personally, I would go for the PS3, but that's because of the games, not the movies. Like Bill142 said though, PS3 is ready to go out of the box.

One thing to consider though...you can go to the store TODAY and buy the 360, while as a PS3 still has a considerable wait.

Blu-ray is the better of the 2 HD systems. Holds more and is more technologically advanced. PS3 is newer than XBOX360 and is a significant leap in console gaming. Expect Sony to still be selling the PS3 in 6 years time!
Sony has learnt from its mistakes re the Betamax vs VHS war and this time has itself backed up with powerful allies... In the industry Blu-ray has more supporters, manufacturers, studios than HD-DVD.
Blu-ray is also able to be upscaled to about 200GB using multiple layers... there is talk that HD-DVD might one day make it to 80GB but that it just doesn't have the bandwidth to handle the extra volume of data.
As of this moment however there is little difference between the 2 standards and if you are looking at it for games then it comes down to XBOX360 vs PS3...

I recently picked up a PS3 at Target - just like that.

It's the best and cheapest Blu-Ray DVD player out there.

As for Betamax comparisons, remember Sony is now a major studio too, and 7 of the 8 majors have signed on for Blu-Ray.

On the downside, not many titles out - movies or games (It comes with Talladega Nights in the box).

There are also some reports outhere that the HD Drive in the XBox 360 is more demanding on system resosurces on the machine than the games are!

My videophile friend also tells mes something about the actuall connections between the HD add-on are not the best.

IMHO- Blu Ray's additional storage capacity will be an asset in the (near?) future. Just look at the growth in terms of capacity of flash cards, Ipods and hard drives!

The 360's HD capabilities are good no doubt, the PS3 will be just as good and i don't think there will be that much of a difference. It really depends on how much you want to spend. The PS3 is expensive, £450 and £600 (USD equivalent). The 360 is at least just as good as the PS3 but almost half as expensive. They are both fantastic machines and i doubt you will be disappointed, infact i'm close to buying a 360 myself as i can't be bothered to wait until the PS3's price comes down. The 360 is much cheaper and is available.

I started looking around, and Best Buy has PS3's in stock. Plus they are now selling on E-Bay for right at or even slightly less than they cost brand new.

I'm sold on the PS3 and Blu-Ray. I'll try to pick one up in the near future. Thanks for all of your replies.

One more thing - can anyone tell me about the "true HD" games on PS3? Are they ALL in "true HD"? Or is it just certain ones?

Thanks!

Without knowing if there's anything about it, I'd suggest Game Spot. They usually have pretty good reviews and everything else video game related.

Apparently, not all games on the PS3 are viewing at 1080p. I'm pretty sure some of the larger game sites have been covering that in depth. Plus, the up-conversion from older PS2 games hasn't been pretty either.

On the other handm, all X360 games output at 720p (1080i) regardless are look amazing good. I beleive a recent software update allows the system to now up-convert to 1080p over VGA cables if your TV accepts that input.
