Experts Vexed By Teenage Abuse Of Legal Drugs

Wed Dec 27, 2006 9:43 pm

(Fair Use Excerpt)

Quote:
Federal officials are concerned that teenagers are abusing prescription medications and over-the-counter cold remedies even as their illegal drug use continued a decade-long decline in 2006, according to a government survey released yesterday.

Illegal drug use by teenagers has fallen 23 percent since 2001, but their use of prescription narcotics, tranquilizers and other medicines remains at relatively high levels, government investigators said.

What's more, researchers for the first time asked whether teens were using cough or cold medicines to get high and found reason for concern there too.

Questions:

1. Do you believe that federal concern over the "relatively high level" of use of legal drugs by teenagers is warranted?

2. Does it surprise you that drug abuse has been on the decline for a decade?

3. Do you believe that laws against the use of marijuana or other drugs should be repealed?

Thank you in advance.

Yes. Theres this girl (name with-held for identity purposes) at my school. Last school year she was in I.C.T and had some headache pills with her. A friend of hers dared her for a joke to take them all (there was 12) at the time she didnt take them but later on did, she was taken to hospital and they stomach pumped her, they still thought she was going to die. She didnt and shes still at our school and looks back on it as a learning experience.

The fact is give any irresponsible person a "drug" regardless whether its legal or not they will consider trying to take them to take high.

"Despite such concerns, Walters sad the news from the survey was good, showing continued long-term declines in teenagers' use of marijuana and alcohol and alcohol. "

So what were the proof readers on?

Don't know if it's me or what, but I've never felt any compulsion to go out and get high on any narcotic, and alcohol either has little impact or sends me to sleep (well a good Cotes du Rhone rouge does). Maybe I've got enough to keep me occupied during the day to not need mental readjustment.

Why do people do it? I would expect that there are as many reasons as users. Escape, excitement, peer pressure, boredom, "well everyone else is doing it."

As to your points.

1) Certainly the government should be interested. It's not as if drugs are a minor issue. There are more than likely to be health, social and welfare issues related to abuse of drugs, especially if people become dependent.

2) Hard drug use is still on the up over here in the UK, and most street and house robberies are related to this. I presume the use of such in the US has declined because of the very strict enforcement and long sentences.

3) In some ways it would be better for illegal drugs to be controlled and issued by some responsible authority, if only to stop the $billions in revenue going into the pockets of criminals/terrorists. It will never happen though because of the negative PR. A government as a drug dealer is not a label anyone would want, though it would be the lesser of 2 evils.

Replies:
#1 - Yes, but this isn't a new problem. There is a need to allow for reasonable adult access to 'legal drugs' but yet keep them away from minors. Everybody had the need to show responsibility. As to alcohol, strong enforcement of the age limit laws of buyers and stronger host liability laws upon homeowner parents can help. As to both alcohol and over the counter (OTC)/prescription drug abuse, parents must take action to either limit the quanties of and access to them in the home. Everybody should throw out prescription drugs after they stop taking them to limit access to others. Many teens are stealing from their parents, other siblings or adults in the home their alcohol, OTC or prescription drugs for their own use or to sell to others, with great risks. Many teens steal alcohol and drugs from stores or buy them from other teens whom have stolen them.
#2 - No, due to a number of factors. Greater pressure from parents, even if they used drugs or abused alcohol. Improved education of the risks in schools and among the general public. Tighter enforcement of DUI laws along with less overall acceptance as to the use and abuse of alcohol or drugs. Drug testing by many employers and at schools as to athletes and related activities (like Cheer leading). Zero-tolarance of possession or use or under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the workplace and schools. We must continue to be on the watch for the changes in the drugs used and continue to enforce reasonable laws.
#3 - Reasonable personal use amounts of pot should be tolerated and legally available if approved by a ligament medical professionals for their patients where it is effective (like those with persist ant pain, undergoing cancer treatments, have AIDS related diseases, etc). Perhaps too, legal prescription access to hard drugs like Heroin as done in some countries but with channeling of such persons into long term rehab.

Great answers, everyone! Very informative, and lots to read.

Here are my answers to my own questions:

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
1. Do you believe that federal concern over the "relatively high level" of use of legal drugs by teenagers is warranted?

No, I do not. I don't think that the federal government should be interested in such matters, as I don't believe that this is a major concern at the moment. State authorities should monitor the situation and, if necessary, take appropriate action.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
2. Does it surprise you that drug abuse has been on the decline for a decade?

It does. I think that society has become more permissive over the years and that the stigma attached to illegality has diminished.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
3. Do you believe that laws against the use of marijuana or other drugs should be repealed?

I do not. However, they should be enforced in a logical manner and not in a way that could destroy the lives of those who may have made a few mistakes here and there.

It'll be because in school the price of weed has gone up but the price of ciggarettes has gone down, so they go for the cheaper.

^^ Cigarette smoking also has its deleterious effects, I must admit.

I'm generally not a smoker, and as I've said, I've probably smoked about seven or eight packs in my entire life.

The only time I smoke is when I'm in Vegas, and even then, almost never.

Partaking of fine cigars was a particularly popular trend a few years ago among those who don't usually smoke them; I think that Rush Limbaugh must have had something to do with it. You can find cigar lounges at some of the best shopping malls even here in health-conscious Southern California. I've never gotten into this habit, although I've tried a number of cigars.

Which reminds me: A few hours ago, I saw an archival clip on the news of President Ford smoking a pipe while being filmed as he was working in the Oval Office, I believe. When was the last time you saw anyone smoking a pipe in public?
