Virgin Mobile USA Cell Phones

Fri Dec 29, 2006 7:12 am

Hi,

Does anyone know whether it's possible to use a Virgin Mobile USA SIM card in a non Virgin "unlocked" phone ? In the UK I can use my Orange SIM card in my unlocked o2 phone, but on the Virgin Mobile USA website it says you can't use their SIM card's in any other type of phone ?

When I go back to the USA in the new year I want to take my UK handset and use a Virgin Mobile SIM in it. My UK phone is quad band (850/900/1800/1900 Mhz) and as far as I can see Virgin Mobile USA use 850 Mhz so I don't see why it wouldn't work but just wondered if anyone's tried it... I used to use a cingular SIM card and it worked fine but if anyone's got any clue then I'd appreciate it as my knowledge of US cell phones & networks is pretty much zero !

Virgin Mobile is GSM in the USA. They use the T-Mobile network.

Yes, you can use a Virgin USA SIM in an unlocked phone, as long as the unlocked phone is a dual band GSM phone.

Virgin Mobile,at least on the West Coast,
says Sprint CDMA network right on the package.
I'm not aware of Virgin having a dual network
system.

Actually they piggyback on Sprint's PCS network. The only MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that uses T-Mobile's network in the US is TracPhone, and that depends on what part of the country the user is in. Most MVNOs use either Sprint's or Cingular's network.

Found this on their site. I used to use Virgin Mobile about a year ago. I thought it was a waste of money for me, but it could be good for teens... once their out of money on their phone they're out, no more texts or calls until they can "Top-up" again. Maybe that's just my opinion.

Virgin Mobile was a waste. Hell, you didn't even have coverage in Apple Valley...

For teens, I recommend T-Mobil To Go. Prepaid, but with a real phone, and real network.
