New Year : What's All The Hype About?!

Sun Dec 31, 2006 7:32 am

Since I've been old enough to remember, I've never really understood the point in celebrating New Year.

Ok, fair enough, it's a great excuse to go and get pissed out of your minds, but why?

Personally, I treat it as any other evening. I just wake up next year  Silly

Can someone shed some light onto this for me? Does anybody else feel the same?

The ending of year and the greeting of a new one. More or less everybody has something bad happen in a year so this is time to forget that and start afresh in a new year  Smile

I will be going out and celebrating new year!  drunk

I'm not working at all New Year's Eve or New Year's Day (I love paid holidays!) But I'll be staying at home by myself. Don't feel like going to my friend's party and getting a minor just 7 months before 21. Nuh uh! I'll stay home and post on a.net!  Wink

Yep. For me, it marks the end to all the silly antics of December and a return to normalcy.

For some reason, my brother invited me over to his house tomorrow for dinner. I can't figure out why.

I totally despise New Years (New Year's Eve, to be precise). Seems there is always something going wrong on that date. Countless fights with my mother, my last day of work (in an airline, mind you!), my grandpa's passing away...  Sad It must be a curse or something...
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

As I've gotten older, I've become less thrilled about New Years or
celebrating New Years Eve. I've always looked at it as amateurs
night. Way too many drunken idiots acting stupid. Wifey and I
usually stay close to home.

Back in the day, I never needed an excuse like New Years Eve to
tie one on. Monday morning at 2:30 was excuse enough to party.

I've just got in from a well....somewhat dull evening at a club - It was dead! Probably everyone saving themselves for tomorrow - i've got tickets for a club - but can't drink as I'll be marshalling planes at 10am the next morning!  Sad

Oh yes!  Wow!

The only 'good' thing about this 31/12-01/01 is when I can fire some fireworks (not much, compared to other Icelanders. I ain't that crazy  angel  ). I find the hype however strange.

Because wherever you go tonight there will be the best buzz of the year. There's no other night out like it. You'll see people you haven't seen for a long time, and meet new ones too. It has an atmosphere all of its own!

The real question is: WHOSE New Year is it ? 2007 is in the Christian scheme of things. It's a different year by the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Jewish, and Muslim calendars (and others that I did not include for which I apologize). And, for those following the orthodox calendar, it won't be New Year until Jan 13, 2007 (by the Gregorian calendar).

Confused enough by now ?

My plan is to cook a very nice chicken curry, basmati rice, nan, have a very nice meal with a beautiful lady and retire while we're still up to performing.
Ooooohhh....almost forgot to mention the strawberry & passionfruit tort.

To all: celebrate as you wish, and may peace follow in your footsteps.

It's the only winter holiday designed around friends instead of relations, and has no ties to bind you (unless that's your thing, of course  Wink ).

It's also a good excuse to drink up the leftover Christmas and Thanksgiving booze so it doesn't go bad.  champagne

I'm seventeen now and I have grown to treating the 31st December like any other night. When I was a child, the whole family used to be together and set off fireworks etc... now the whole family is dispersed. I have work at 5am tomorrow!

The best thing about the new year is the new year's celebrations, i just watched the pyrotechnics in London, it was pretty good.

To me, New Year's is about either A: having fun with friends (not this year) or B: watching Bruce Willis movies until my brain oozes out of my ears into a puddle near my feet.

However, this year, I may just pull out my joystick and play some FS to waste time until midnight hits here in the Mountain Time Zone.
I need a drink.

I've got to agree with you totally (Tupolev154). It's nice to leave one year behind and look forward to the next, but when it comes down to it, what changes? You're still in the same situation and nothing changes once you get back to normal after the celebrations. I can wholeheartedly say 2006 was an inspiration to me and I wish it never ended, but time moves on and things change. Call me a party pooper, I don't care, new year is a huge build up to an antic climax. After the celebrations, you find yourself in the same situation as the day before.

I know what you mean. I felt similarly about my birthday in recent years. First the 2003 earthquake in Bam, Iran, then the Tsunami in 2004. I started asking myself the same thing. Fortunately, these last two years there were no natural disasters anywhere on my birthday.
