Films That Have Touched You

Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:01 am

This thread is dedicated to the films that have made you think and made you quite sad.

For me:

United 93
Titanic
Crash

I may think of more.

And Skiddy, this is not about films that made you touch yourself, understood?  Big grin

Well:

Brotherhood of war ('Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo' in Korean). A great Korean war movie, you should watch it if you get the chance, great yet heart breaking strory-line.

Joint Security area (or JSA for short).('Gongdong gyeongbi guyeok JSA' in Korean). Another Korean war film well worth seeing

Black Hawk down (although not as touching as the past 2)

I'm surprised that Apollo 13 has not come up yet. That one always gets me. Also, you all have to see Grave of the Fireflies. It's a Studio Ghibli anime film that shows what happens to two Japanese children following the firebombing of Tokyo. Phenominally depressing film, but it is definitely worth seeing.

Hadashi no Gen is a Japanese anime movie from 1983. I generally don't like Japanese anime, but this one's quite unique.

It depicts the life of six-year-old Hadashi during the first couple weeks of August 1945. He lives in Hiroshima. Here's a five-minute clip:

It's available from Netflix and Blockbuster.

Snow White and the seven dwarfs
at a period in time, long ago, when most girls in their early twenties were still virgins, boys were neatly dressed and decent, the language was spoken and written as it was intended to be. Most of you would not know...

Closer...(early sixties) b/w
"Si tous les gars du monde" by Christian Jacque (only in French AFAIK)
At the height of the cold war, a (basically true) story in which a hard to believe human solidarity chain develops to save a few fishermen at sea.

Almost close... (seventies) intentionally b/w
"The Elephant Man" the (true) story of a man suffering from elephantiasis, removed from his mentor/enslaver showing him around as a circus animal, and demonstrating how nature can produce so much kindness in such an horrible human enveloppe.

I think it's very underrated and everyone should see it. It's a family movie, too. Robin Williams was great in that and also in One Hour Photo, where he played a part very uncharacteristic of what you would expect from him, almost spooky.
