The roof of BC Place Stadium (in Vancouver) has collapsed on 05JAN07 around 1240LT.

BC Place Stadium is the planned venue to host the opening and closing ceremony of 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver/Whistler.

Before the collapse, and after...

Yikes, hope nobody is hurt, that is a pretty major structural failure! Were the winds up, or was there maintenance being carried out? Something shouldn't just fail like that all of a sudden!

Isn't the top similar to the Metrodome in Minnesota? Foster City, CA had a shopping center that had a roof similar and it to rip a hole in it and collapse. Shouldn't take that long to repair.

just learned..

No one hurt.

It's a 'fabric' type roof, held up by air. A section of roof failed, and the roof came in on itself as the air pressure dropped in the stadium.

Replacement panel is on its way.

Not a big deal apparently.

Thank goodness!

I hope that there were no people inside when it happened. That is one huge place and your right it was to be used for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

How is the Olympic committee dealing with this setback?

It's not one..

It's not unusual for this type of stadium to have this happen at least once.

WOW, I am glad it can be repaired fairly easily. My heart immediatly sank when I saw the topic title because I knew it was going to be instrumental in the 2010 olympics. Which I am planning on attending. Also anyone know when tickets will go on sale?

IIRC it is about 10-12 years old. So fairly new if you ask me.

It's a lot older than that. I saw US there in 1987, so it has certainly got 20 years under it's belt. Looks like a marshmallow in bondage

Thanks for the update! Glad to know no one was hurt and this can be easily fixed.

Not a real big deal unless the support structure itself is damaged. Then it's a bigger deal.

Snow/rain load + strong wind gusts caused the live load on the fabric to exceed ultimate limit = big tear and poofing sound.

Admittedly, though, Lower Mainland in BC has had a _terrible_ autumn/early winter due to El Nino. Back here in the East people are golfing. Usually the other way around.

Still think it's  redflag  that the opening ceremonies will happen indoors. Oh well, @ least it didn't happen during a Lions game, concert, etc.

Concerts are generally held at GM Place, just a block near by

My thoughts exactly. The opening ceremonies should happen outdoors. The only reason why not to is because of rain... Well now that i have said that looks like I answered my own thoughts it is Vancouver after all.

Wasn't it built for Expo 86 originally?

The entire Pac NW is getting slammed, we've gone from temps in the teens, to a foot of snow to hurricane force winds, all in December!

It didn't actually collapse... a panel ripped open during bad weather and to avoid further damages and other risks, the roof was brought down.

True, didn't think of that.

Oh well, maybe the torch will burn the roof off  devil

IIRC, the Metrodome's (Minneapolis) roof has collapsed twice due to heavy snow, and that was an air supported roof. I don't know if this BC place has the same style roof, but this is not as unusual as one would think.
