A Football Coaching Rant

Mon Jan 08, 2007 4:22 pm

I remember years ago when Tom Landry was coaching the Cowboys and Don Schula was coaching the Dolphins. That was the big rivalry in our house. But, I remember all the coaches wore suits. They looked more dignified and respected. Now, they all run around in shirts and pants and look like the towel boy. What happened? Will football coaches ever go back to looking respectful?

Believe it or not, the NFL does have a dress code for coaches.
I bet a big factor could be the conditions each sport is played in. EG, basketball is played indoors, where weather is a non-factor so the Coach can wear a suit. But when you're exposed to the elements, such as in football, you probably don't want to be wearing a suit. Heck, baseball managers where the team uniform.

Yes, but back in the day, the coaches wore suits even when playing in Chicago, Green Bay, and Buffalo

But, I have heard that is a nod to the olden days when the manager was also a player, so that I can kinda understand. I don't like it, but I can understand.

Mike Nolan the SF 49ers HC, and Jack Del Rio the Jaguars HC both wear suits. They are made by Reebok, but all NFL coaches and players must wear Reebok-only gear on the sideline.

They each wore suits for 2 games this year, which is apparently the maximum number of times a head coach can wear a suit per year. It has to do with the apparel liscencing bullshit.

Was the last coach to regularly wear one Dan Reeves?

IDK JPetek...
Howard Schnellenberger isn't allowed to wear a suit in the NCAAs anymore..it was his trademark outfit at "The U" though.

If they want to wear suits, they should be allowed to.

The same thing has happened here with Aussie Rules, again mainly to do with promoting the licenced apparel but also the coach's shirts usually have the logos of the major sponsors on them as well as part of sponsorship deals. The Port Adelaide coach (boo, hiss!) Mark Williams is proably the last coach who wears a suit on the ground, but the sponsors logo is on the collars of his shirt!

For comparsion, The Collingwood (boo, hiss again!) coach, Mick Malthouse, this time the logo is of the team's major sponsor, Emirates

And finally, the coach of Essendon (my team!), Kevin Sheedy, major sponsor is 3.

Yes, Sheeds is a strange person, with some unorthodox methods (he has been accused of coming from another planet!), but he has produced results, winning 4 premierships, and finishing another 3 years as runners up during his time as coach. He has been coach since 1981, when other teams replace their coaches almost yearly (or sooner!)
