It's Official - 2007 Birmingham Planning Underway

Tue Jan 09, 2007 6:05 am

To The Airliners . Net Community -

You are all cordinally invited to attend "The Second Great Birmingham Shoot Out 2007."
Strong tentative dates for this year's meet are October 26, 27, and 28.

Details and cost ideas are as follows.

Those involved in organizing and participating in "The First Great Birmingham Shoot Out" in 2006 have all agreed to meet again this year and to extend the invittation to the rest of the A.Net community.

During the weekend of November 3, 4, and 5, 2006, approximately 12 members of the website and their guests traveled nearly 23,500 miles from 8 states into Birmingham to attend the event.

Unlike most A.Net meet events, the main event is not a spotting trip to the airport to watch airplanes. Instead, the event mainly focuses around a trip to a gunnery range that went way out of their way to be accomodating to the group in 2006. The trip to the range will take place on that Saturday roughly from 11am until about 4pm in the afternoon.

If you are a die hard fire arms owner, you will enjoy yourself. If you are not, you will still most likely enjoy yourself. They aren't here to turn you into a gun nut, they just want a chance to enjoy their hobby and share it at the same time.

While your enjoyment is important, SAFETY is the number one priority for the entire weekend.

There is still plenty of time and opportunities at the range to be social and meet new friends. Drinks and snacks will be made available.

However, the traditional dinner/social sessions of most A.Net meets will still take place. Nothing will be confirmed until the first of October but in 2006, that Friday night was a meet 'n greet near the airport for everyone as they arrived in Birmingham. Saturday morning was a breakfast gathering followed by the shoot out, and then a few hours after the conclusion of the shoot out, everyone met downtown for dinner at what many of the attendees called "a very very fantastic restaurant." Drinks and cocktails followed as the A.Net community went and made its stamp in one of Birmingham's more affluent neighborhoods. Sunday was a "option day" with everyone departing Birmingham per their convenience.

We realize that sometimes costs plays a part in the decision of whether or not people are able to attend the meets.

The trip costs about as much as you make it cost.
A rough idea from 2006 *MINUS* airfare -

Friday Night Meet 'n Greet - $20 - $25

Saturday Night Dinner - $50

Shoot Out - depends on what your needs are. The situation on whether or not attendees are willing to share their fire arms with you depends solely on them and the situation, but for a good full afternoon of shooting, a $100 in ammo is a safe bet.

Accomodations - $50 to however much you wish to spend per night.

Transportation - depends on what you make it. you can pay for your own rental car or fork up some gas money and arrange to share transportation options with others once you are there.

Keep in mind you can bow out of any event or activity at your own discretion.

There are bound to be more posts on this throughout the year. But we encourage and invite everyone who might be interested to mark their calendars now and to let us know what your plans, ideas, and thoughts are.

Sincerely yours,

Go ahead and put me down as well. There's plenty of time between the LAS Meet and this one to save up for it and start the saving up for the 2008 LAS Meet.

Well crap. I sold my USP .40 to my buddy the other day, as I just don't have a place to store it anymore, haven't used it it in over a year, and my mother just negated the 2nd ammendment in my folks' house. Sigh...

We'll attend this year as well. Bring some more ammunition this time. We ran out and had to buy more at the range...

This is a great opportunity to meet some nice people. Again I'll give props to BHMBAGLOCK for his hospitality last year and to ilikeyyc for setting it up.

For anyone who interested in this meet, I suggest that you bookmark the following web site and check it periodicly for updates:

http://www.freewebs.com/bhmshoot07/index.htm

MiamiAir has set this web page up and it will be updated with more information between now and then. Any ideas on what to post (besides the obvious information) are welcome.

Good job promoting the meet, STLGph!

So far the list is as follows:
ilikeyyc
miamiair
queso
stlgph
kaigywer
adopim88
srbmod

And its a good bet that bhmbaglock and dl021 will attend again. I think bmiflyer said he would attend this year.

So we're looking at Oct 19-21. Fine by me, I have nothing else scheduled in october or november

November doesn't because of sweeps. There's a 50% chance that I can ultimately end up making it, but it's not fun to chance it.

You don't have to shoot, you can just watch, but we will have plenty of guns and experienced shooters that can help you get started correctly and safely if you want to. And after you watch for a little bit, you'll want to! I'd be glad to help you if you'd like to give it a try.

Shooting the gun is not the hard part, like throwing a baseball is not the hard part, hitting what you're aiming at is the trick.

Of course you could always take bayonet lessons if the shooting part doesn't interest you....

actually, yes i had.

He meant a gun with metal bullets  wink

Quoting Queso (Reply 34):
Not sure if that was from the range visit or from sticking your head in the monkey though.

Surface, surface.....

thought you had, but I wasn't sure. I know you left BHM being a lean, mean, fighting machine!

Strong tentative dates for this year's meet are October 26, 27, and 28.

Hmmm.....Those dates happen to conviently fall on the weekend that our Three Day Homecoming Weekend is scheduled (Fri-Sat-Sun), so I may be able to come up from DAB for the weekend. I imagine BHM is about an 8 hour drive or so from Daytona. (Or maybe find a decent fare MCO-BHM-MCO, though I'm not old enough for a rental car; I'd be dependent on a ride if this were the case).
So depending on the dates, I may be able to come up. I don't own a firearm, and I've only shot an M9 and M4 on two seperate occasions (though I will be qualifying with the M9 this coming summer at Field Training with ROTC). But given the list of a.netters who plan to attend, I'm at least "interested" at this point, so mark me down as a "Maybe", and I'll see what happens as the dates draw closer.
If there's an email list being generated, I'll send a PM to whoever's in charge of that with my email address.

I don't have a firearm, either. I just owe a couple of people a few drinks or what not next year for being so kind for letting me use theirs.

The range was very accomodating ... so you never know ... if a few people from there dont own firearms and feel like getting their own for the day, there may be the possibility of a slight discount for the group ... but don't quote me on that.

And if you want to fly up, Southwest flies nonstop into Birmingham from Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa. Not an airline of choice perhaps given by your screen name, but it keeps it simple ... gets you there in about an hour and there's a couple of departures a day to choose from.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

I'll see what my schedule looks like for the Fall Semester (wont know the actual class schedule till we register for the fall in April, but I'll still know well in advance, minus a specific test or something.)

Eh, I'll fly Southwest. Flew them over Thanksgiving because my first choice of airline wanted nearly twice as much.   .
I did punch in MCO-BHM on Delta though for the dates listed so far (couldnt on WN because you can only book through May) and MCO-BHM (DL also goes direct MCO-BHM) was $216 or so and via ATL was $237.

I did forget to mention that my cousin has a wedding on the 20th of Oct in Ohio, though I don't know if I'll be attending that yet or not. But certainly don't plan the meet around that.

I'll be planning a class schedule so that I'm done early on Friday anyway, so getting an early afternoon flight wouldn't be a problem. Plus, I just remembered BHM is Central Time, so I gain the hour going there.   Makes getting there at a reasonable time on Friday a little easier.

I just put down on the vacation calendar at work to be off so I can attend October 12-15.

FlyDeltaJets87, is that going to work OK for you? Not sure if you had seen the discussion earlier in the thread, but looks like October 26-28 are a bust and it's moving to October12-15.

Anybody checked with the personnel at the FOP range yet to make sure that date doesn't conflict with any big shoots happening there that weekend?

I wonder if FOP would let us send some ammo directly to the range and hold it for us, maybe even for a fee or a donation. It looked like they have a pretty secure place there and they store ammo anyway. And we're only talking about a few thousand rounds (for me, anyway).
