Michigan Tops List Of States..........

Wed Jan 10, 2007 4:24 am

....that people are leaving

Well, no big surprise here!

More people left Michigan last year than moved in, continuing a trend that has lasted almost 30 years, according to a survey from a leading moving company released Monday.

Of the 10,325 interstate shipments handled by United Van Lines in Michigan during the year, 66% were for moving people out of the state, putting Michigan in a tie with North Dakota for the largest percentage of outbound moves for the year.

Not once since 1977, when the company began tracking the data, has Michigan had more customers moving into the state than exiting it. But the 66% departure rate was just below Michigan's highest departure level of 66.9%, in 1981

I figured Ohio would be #1. The ultra-conservative legislature here has been finding ways to drive people out for almost two decades now. They've done a good job of it, too.

Between the auto industry and Pfizer, lots of Michigan residents have been getting laid off lately...

What a shame. Michigan is a wonderful state.
It's affordable, has four seasons, lots of wilderness/camping/fishing and surrounded by the Great Lakes.
Michigan is beautiful, especially the Upper Peninsula.

Thats to bad. We used to go to Michigan every summer for vacation when I was younger. Right off the coast of Lake Michigan in a little town called Ludington to be exact. As stated above, it is a beautiful state.

When I was a kid, we lived in Gary, Indiana next to the Indiana State Dunes. .
Indiana sucks compared to Michigan. It was always nice to go drive up to Michigan.
I first learned how to ski up in the U.P. of Michigan.

Michigan is one of my favorite states in the U.S. If the job market was better, then I might make it my home. I actually like the Detroit Area specifically the northern suburbs like Sterling Heights and Utica. The scenery throughout the whole state is amazing and I love the 4 seasons.

Obviously hasn't been to Detroit in a while. I cringe every time I have to cross the bridge back into Canada, and whenever I can, I change the POE from Windsor to Port Huron. Detroit is so slummy these days the seagulls fly upside down over it, since it ain't worth crapping on!

Sad, but not surprising, given the terrible unemployment situation there (as well as Steve Yzerman no longer skating for the Wings). I grew up in Oakland County and it was always touted as being in the top 5 of the wealthiest counties in the country. I wonder where it ranks nowadays. One claim to fame MI will always have over the other 49 states: You can use your left hand, with the palm facing away, as a pretty accurate map of the state. Gotta love da midden state. I hope things get turned around there.

Even better, though....if you hold your right hand palm-up and fingers pointing up, you've got the lower peninsula. Place your left hand above it, palm-up and fingers pointing to the right, and you've got the U.P.

And...when doing so, if you lower your left hand so that it makes contact with the middle finger on your right hand, voila'! You've got the Mackinac Bridge connecting the two peninsulas.

Lots of good camping in the U.P.. Detroit casinos are a joke. DTW is a cool airport. The drive along lake Michigan is neat.

I'm not a snowmobiler myself, but I was amazed to learn just how extensive a network of snowmobile trails the U.P. has. It's an entire lifestyle up there...from what I understand, entire families get on their sleds in the afternoon/evening and head out until the wee hours.

I understand there are restaurants and lodges where all of these people gather and hang out before bundling up and heading back home. Sounds like a fun time.

I like Michigan State Police cars. They still use the same lights, hood sign, and markings that they've used for decades.

Yep, definitely a traditional classic. As you can see from the picture, they've actually ventured into 20th century technology as well with the addition of strobe lights on the backside of the exterior mirrors. Some units also have rear deck strobes as well. It'll be a sad day if they ever decide to deep 6 the hood sign and the single beacon.

Michigan is simply beautiful. Wicked sunsets over the lakes, best thunder storms I've ever heard, but I need plenty of coffee the next day just to stay awake during the day, totally loose count of the number of lakes while flying over Michigan. I hope I can come back in a few months, cause I miss Michigan

It's actually pretty bright, yet slightly effeminate when illuminated. It's two, headlight-sized sealed beams (Mark might have the exact specs). It's not real clear in the picture but there are two circular clear bands in the red dome which, from a distance, give the beacon a pink tint to it. Don't think we didn't have some fun with the Troopers about their pink overheads when backing them on stops .

Which is one of the reasons it's nicknamed, "The Great Lakes State" (the other reason is, of course due to it's 5 Great Lakes). There are something like 12,000 inland lakes in MI and regardless of where you are in the the state, you're never more than 80 miles from one of the Great Lakes. It truly is a beautiful state and it's a shame people are leaving at record rates.
