Dual SIM Cellphone

Thu Jan 11, 2007 12:49 pm

Hey guys, I need some help I know there are different options out there but I need some help with a dual-sim cellular phone.

Is there a modern cell phone produced that holds two SIM cards?

Also, I have a Motorola L6. Can I use one of those adaptors on my phone without having to turn off the phone to change networks? Can I use one of those adaptors without having to open the lid and change the cards manually?

Thanks for any help or expertise.

no there is no phone that can hold 2 SIMs. SIMs are carrier specific and are part of the GSM standard. There are however phones that you do not need to power down and take apart to change the SIM in, the Palm Treo series for example. The SIM goes in an easily extractable tray, all you need to do is turn the wireless on after inserting the new SIM.

I remember the days of Dual NAM analog cell phones. I guess with the nationwide service by most companies nowadays, it's no longer necessary.

There is in fact. The other Finnish phone maker Benefon has the Benefon Twin, but they don't seem to actively market other than GPS solutions nowadays. The frequency band is not North America compatible, however.

I have one, but I'm going to keep it as a speciality. You select the card at powerup.

I use a dual sim adapter on my phone (K800i), you can get adapters which feature a 'sim toolkit' which basically adds a menu somewhere in your phone that allows you to switch the simcard in use without turning your phone off. Others without the sim toolkit alternate the sim in use with every restart of the phone.

Look out for the different types of adapters. The one I use required me to cut out the chip from the sim card and place it in the adapter provided (they come with stickers you stick on the sim, and just follow the cut lines). The ones that don't require cutting simply have two sim holders connected to a simcard circuit chip thing that goes in the phones sim holder, but these can be tricky if you have a small/slim handset.

Here are some that require cutting of SIM cards:

Here's another design that does not need the SIMs to be cut:

(hope the links copied from EBay work fine - otherwise just open ebay and search for dual sim).

I've never used these (nor know anyone who has)!
