Tragic Indeed, I forgot water intoxication was even possible. I wonder why the people hosting event would even come up with this kind of contest. Shouldn't it have been consulted with a doctor or someone first?

Some idiots at a fraternity at my University hazed with water chugging. This nursing student (who you'd think would know better) had to be rushed to the hospital for water intoxication. I don't remember if he did or not, but if he didn't, he was in serious condition.

Go human race!

Once I think we're doomed, someone does something like this and redeems my faith in our survival.

I'm just hoping she didn't pop out a kid.

having already passed on her genes ( she had three kids ) she is ineligible for a Darwin Award - it is for people who have removed themselves from the gene pool

Hopefully their father provided them with a little common sense, but I doubt it.

I hear what you say. However a certain 55-year-old Marko was joint winner of the 2005 award. Although there is no specific mention of offspring, he could well have had (grown-up) children at that age. Heaven forbid, he might even have been a grandfather.

Water contains sodium, too much of it causes an imbalance between the sodium and potassium levels which have to be within relatively normal limits for the heart cells to function properly. Technical term is electrolyte imbalance which can cause cardiac failure leading to death.

There's something about radio stations and ill judged competitions... in this case it's tragic, and for such small reward.

Others in the hall of infamy

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2691229.stm

"A Birmingham radio station has been fined £15,000 after four people were left with severe frostbite after a competition stunt went wrong.

BRMB challenged contestants to sit on blocks of dry ice - carbon dioxide frozen at temperatures of -78C - to win tickets and back stage passes for a music festival in the city."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/262403.stm

"A British couple who met for the first time on their wedding day have gone ahead with the marriage ceremony.

They completed their vows at Birmingham's Hyatt Hotel in a strange "blind-date" style wedding despite strong protest from church leaders that their plans were "a dangerous and immoral experiment".

Carla Germaine, a 23-year-old former model, and sales manager Greg Cordell, 28, won a competition, Two Strangers and a Wedding, organised by Birmingham's BRMB radio station."

Ten people have been fired over this.
Radio show pulled after woman's death

SACRAMENTO (AP) — A radio station fired three morning disc jockeys and seven other employees Tuesday after a woman died from drinking nearly two gallons of water in a contest.

The hosts of KDND-FM's Morning Rave were fired a day after the station announced it was suspending the show and investigating the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Lea Strange.
