Yet Another Favorite Restaurant Closed!

Sun Jan 14, 2007 10:23 pm

I was walking down the Zitna Street in Prague yesterday, and found out that what would be my favorite Czech-type restaurant, Aba, had closed at the end of 2006. This is a real pity, as this was about the best restaurant of its kind that I know of. Not only was there a very good selection of well-made food, it was also not particularly expensive. The service tended to be good, and they had on tap Svijany, a particularly good beer.

This is not the first time I've seen a good restaurant close down. In the mid-1990s there was in Toronto across the street from Honest Ed's bargain store a Hungarian restaurant and deli called Balint. Those people could cook! I have warm memories of going there, particularly with my grandmother, as a teenager. But by 1997, the restaurant had closed, and I found on its place a book sale, with books literally being in the kitchen on the stove, as I recall it.

Similarly, on Yonge Street near the city limits, maybe a kilometer South of Steeles Ave., there was a number of years ago (c. 2002) a seafood place called Pickfair Family Restaurant. A small place, but with a classic, simple restaurant atmosphere, and good fish and chips-type food. I managed to go twice to their takeout. The next time I felt like having dinner there, it was closed.

Actually, there are/were a lot of attractive restaurants in that stretch of Yonge St. (between Finch and Steeles and nearby). In the early 1990s, close to Laterna (a restaurant that still stands near Centerpoint Mall and Steeles Ave.,) there was a nice Italian place called Gepetto's. Once, circa December 1990 if I recall correctly, I went there with my parents. We waited a long time for the food, but when it came, it was excellent. That restaurant too is long good. Similarly, close to Finch Street, just North of the Xerox Tower, there was a restaurant called Tony's. Also had good Italian food. It was still open in 1994 under what seemed to be new owners, at any rate it was renovated. Now it's gone. I think that some of the changes in that area may reflect the different ethnic makeup of that part of Toronto.

What favorite restaurants of yours are now kaput?

Tony & Ann's Pizza, 39 Tyngsboro Rd, North Chelmsford, MA

Absolutely nothing compares to those pies...  cry   crying
Mega-thin crust, super sweet sauce, and a mountain of cheese. It was so sloppy, you almost couldn't pick it up!  drool   yummy

My dad grew up across the street and just up the hill from it, and got me hooked at a young age. When I would drive up from central CT to Boston for hockey & football games, I'd almost always 'swing by' (it was 50 miles out of my way!) just to pick up pizzas.

The building is now a Chinese restaurant, I think.
I'll rassle ya for a bowl of bacon!

Laterna @ Yonge/Steeles is still there. They have a great Souvlaki and Greek Salad!
Support the beer and soda can industry, your recycle old airplanes!
