"Colorism": Should The Law Protect Against It?

Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:37 am

According to the following, lighter-skinned blacks receive better treatment than darker-skinned blacks.

Given this, do you think that legal protections afforded blacks should also be extended to cases in which there is shown to be discrimination in favor of lighter-skinned blacks over those of a darker complexion? In what way?

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):

A woman of my acquaintance presented a post-graduate research paper that pretty thoroughly demonstrated that ALL races, ALL societies on earth quite commonly discriminate in some degree against even their own darker-skinned members. It represented a couple of year's work on her part, was quite exhaustive. If you placed your hand on the map anywhere on the inhabited parts of the earth she had studied examples from that region.

The prof. told her he would not accept the topic and she had to start over.

There is no doubt whatever that taller people are treated better than shorter ones or that "pretty" people are favored over the rest of us.

Good luck on trying to change these things.

^^ It's human nature, I suppose, in that case.

But wouldn't this take away some of the impetus from protecting against discrimination on the basis of race, since "visible minorities" are often the ones that the law is determined to protect?
