Inconsiderate Drivers Are One Thing...

Sun Jan 21, 2007 8:11 am

This morning, while out getting a couple things for lunch, I saw something that made me sad to be a human being...

the place: Yonge and College/Carlton Intersection (for those of you not familiar with Toronto, Carlton and College are the same street, the name changes at Yonge, and a streetcar line runs down Carlton/College).

Around 11:30 AM, not rush hour but not dead either...

I arrive just as the lights change on the e-w direction so i cross n-s 1st. Now standing on the SE corner, i witness a white pickup make a right onto College, double park, turn on his 4 way flashers, blocking the streetcar line and the driver calmly got out and went into one of the entrances. There are open parking spaces maybe a half block down College in front of (get this) Metro Police HQ... While this is going on i cross Yonge. Now just as im entering College Park i hear a streetcar pull up at the Carlton Subway exit.

FFWD 10 mins

Come back out to see:

Truck still where it was
Streetcar right behind truck
cars trying to sneak around both
another streetcar at Carlton Stop obviously stuck there
Police Officer trying to direct traffic around pickup
TTC Operator and another Police Officer writing down the truck details
THIRD Police officer buzzing building where driver went in
Horns going crazy everywhere (Yonge/College intersection is a mess of cars trying to turn onto College an having no where to go... of course they are too stupid to go straight...)
THIRD streetcar about 6-7 cars behind the 2nd

So i walk over to the crosswalk, and finally the driver of the truck appears.
while im crossing the street he calmly goes over to the pickup and tries to get in... Luckily one of the Police Officers starts screaming at him long enough for him to be grabbed by another one. The 1st officer takes the guys keys, pulls the truck off the street and into a spot (blocking an alleyway but better than where it was before) while his partner reads this guy the riot act.

Massive Applause from the assembled crowd as the guy is taken away and the streetcars get to move on...

Question: How can ANYONE be that inconsiderate to others? SERIOUSLY??? He can't walk 50 paces from a parking space? yeeesh, he must of caused delays and problems for 200-300 people!

end rant...

IIRC, blocking a streetcar or street-running railroad track carries a nasty penalty in most cities. Trains have the right-of-way over cars and trucks.

Agreed -- quite inconsiderate.

But this is par for the course these days. Freeway rage is one example of how the rules have changed.

I hope that this guy gets a serious fine.

I have to agree I will not even let people park in my driveway and block the sidewalk. I hope they towed him.

Im somewhat confused here. So you let strange people park in your driveway as long as they dont block the sidewalk?

Peter....ah, I hear ya!!! But this wonderful city of Toronto....has become somewhat of a dump due to the people who live here.

Peoples attitudes have changed from being kind and courteous to mean and ignorant!!! Like you, I see it every day...even the apartment building I have lived in for 10 years has gone from a very high class building to a dump! People have no respect for others and they walk around with a don't give a dam attitude. The part that really makes me sick is that they think we owe them something.... I won't keep going on as I might just blow my stack...hehe

That is why I will be moving out of Toronto in the Spring.....I need to move to the real "Canada"....

From my brief experience in Boston, this double parking and blocking random lanes of traffic while one goes to get groceries or something from a local store is commonplace. Can't even count the number of cars we saw double parked down near the Symphony Hall, in downtown, and in the North End. Of course, quite differently from Toronto it appears, there are abso-freaking-lutely no parking spaces to be found anywhere in Boston  Silly
