What Is Going On In The NBA?!

Tue Jan 23, 2007 3:29 am

Is this becoming a thug sport now?! Kevin Garnett of Minnesota was suspended for one game for fighting with a Piston's player (I think..)

The game of basketball has become much more dangerous than ever before. What gives?!

And those gawd awful tattoos! Ughh! Poor taste, who would really want to permanently mark themselves with disgraceful tattoos? Not me.

I can now safely say I am no longer a fan of the NBA, those people are killing the amusement of the game. If they want to fight, go to join a kickboxing club or a fight club.

Stern (NBA Commissioner) is a wuss, he can't even control his league. Go figure!

Now that I have ranted, flame away. I'll stick to football and baseball any day.

Indeed he could be. I remember reading this article about the new Spalding ball, which was specially designed to improve the game in the NBA, but then Stern got into trouble with the players, as they hate the ball and feel that it doesn't improve anything at all, which is why soon they'll switch back to the old leather Spalding Ball. Seems like Stern is unable to stand by what he did when he's under pressure.

And while I like playing basketball every now and then (though I haven't played in years), the NBA has become way too boring for me. It's just not the same as it was years ago, with players like Gary Payton, Detlef Schrempf, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing and the Karl Malone-John Stockton combo. Those players, along with Dream Team I, were who awoke my interest in the NBA. Now it's all about LeBron James and him being the future Michael Jordan this, Kobe Bryant and his sex scandals here. It's almost like a soap opera.

I'm sticking with American Football, Hockey and regular football.

Didnt they already go back to the regular balls Jan 01?

Meh...after watching NHL, I almost can't stand the NFL or NBA anymore. The game is so fast-paced that it almost makes watching the NFL right on par with watching Nursing Home walker races. NBA...shudders. I've never really cared for it anyway. Baseball, well, it's a slow game, but to me there's still something entertaining about it. It's the boys of summer, it's always on the tube in the summer evenings, it's old timey.  Silly

What's this about a new design of basketball for the NBA?

What's the difference between the new Spalding ball and the old balls? Is it in the physics?

Synthetic versus leather. Enough folks complained about the synthetic ones they have gone back to the leather. Not sure about the physics of it but the players said they didn't like the feel.

Steve Nash complained about the cuts he kept getting on his hands while Shaq complained about them making his free throw percentage get lower (as if it really could go any lower.)

That's because Stern was a moron for forcing the ball on the players without getting their opinion or "field testing" it. A majority of players complained about the new ball, and in the end one of the factors with the recall was that the ball being much dryer and of a different composition was actually giving cuts on player's fingers.

Quoting SmithAir747 (Reply 7):

The "new" ball had two interlocking panels as opposed to the 8 (?) in a traditional basketball. Also the main difference was that this ball was synthetic and made of microfiber. It also took on less moisture, which was also another complaint, along with the feeling among the players that the ball was basically forced on them with little time for adjustment.

Also, why do people seem to always criticize the NBA? The NHL has practically a minimum fight per game and nobody seems to make any outcry about that; in fact it's condoned.

Unfortunately, in every major sports, you have your idiots, like Ron Artest, who live to make a bad rep for themselves. I'm surprised at KG going off. He's been one of the good eggs since coming into the league, and I think it was out of character for him to do what he did-same for 'Melo, to be honest.

But the NBA has a lot of positives going for it right now-so many great young players, like D-Wade, LeBron, Josh Howard, Gilbert Arenas, 'Melo. They have a lot of incredible vets as well, who, for the most part, give the league a positive image: Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzke, Paul Pierce, Tim Duncan. The league is in an upswing right now, and the positives outweigh the negatives at this point and time.

I don't pay attention to hoops so much anymore, so I can't comment on KG, one way or the other, but he seems like a decent man. I live in Portland and have watched the last deacde and some produce a long list of law crossing or not so law crossing incidents that were media frezies. You had guys dropping ounces of weed in airports, guys raising fighting dogs in their backyards, guys getting pulled over in their Hummers between PDX and SEA, not to mention the occasional "on court" escipade. I think even Cliff Robinson got nailed for a weapons violation while he was still here. Our woes go back a long ways, but the overall state of the league is equally trashy right now and until Stern or whomever else can instill something positive, its going to be ugly.

Allen Iverson, 'nuff said.

He was a convicted felon in prison and the Governor of Virginia overturned his conviction so he could be released and get a scholarship to Georgetown. Never mind all the trouble he has gotten into with weapons charges, wife beating, etc. since he turned pro.

If that isn't Ghetto Trash then please enlighten me to what is.

The morning paper this morning raises the question if it wasn't for that snowstorm in Denver last month, the Suns might be going for their 33rd straight win tonight. They pointed the game at Denver would have been right after the trade, so Denver would have been short of players, and the Suns wouldn't have been trapped in Denver for several days, and only getting back to PHX 2 hours before tipoff with the Washington team which finally beat them. I wonder if the Washington game wasn't on national TV would it have been postponed, since the NBA has a rule about being in the next city X number of hours prior to the game.

That's probably because NHL fights have been going on for so long that they have developed unwritten rules around them. To quote Wikipedia:

"The hockey fight is like professional boxing, a somewhat ritualized affair with clear rules (not always written) between acceptable and unacceptable behavior.

The acceptable form is boxing/grappling between a pair of players. They will maneuver themselves to either tie up their opponents' arms, or free an arm for a punch to the opponent's face/head. This form of combat is known in hockey parlance as the "dance," as the players will often circle each other in a grapple, looking for an advantage. When a pair of well-matched opposing players engage in a fight, the action of the officials is to back off while blows are actively being thrown. Usually very quickly one or both of the combatants will clinch the other so that punches can no longer be thrown, often falling to the ice in the process, or one of the combatants will "turtle" -- this is when the officials will enter the fray and carefully separate the combatants.

The "unwritten" rules outlaw any form of kicking, punching the stomach, touching the groin area using equipment or other forms of cheap shots to gain an advantage. It must remain similar to a boxing match on skates.

It is not uncommon for one or the other combatants to be bloodied, but significant injuries are rare. The most common injuries are facial lacerations, bruises, and broken noses. This partially has to do with the poor balance a person has on skates. A devastating punch is more difficult to land when one still must focus their balance and weight to some degree on their feet. Thus, some significant injuries have occurred when the unwritten rules are broken and one player has a significant balance advantage (for example, a punch on a player who is being restained by officials, or a downward punch on a player who is already knocked down and lying prone). The NHL often suspends players who take this course."

You rarely see bench-clearing free-for-alls in the NHL, like what happens when there are fights in other sports.

Why are people in basketball who fight or scuffle "thugs," while hockey or baseball players are not? Garnett threw a ball and sorta punched a guy for shoving his teammate (Madsen), while hockey players have broken people's necks and seriously hurt them. If these people were in a predominantly white sport it would be completely fine to fight, or would actually be cheered on like in hockey. It's sad the double standards that exist in our society....

But hockey fights very rarely devolve into serious injuries or all out brawls, while fights in other sports often do lead to brawls. I'm not saying that fighting in hockey is a good thing, but it isn't as much of a problem as in the NBA. NHL fights are a lot more controlled.

As a side note, my sister's friend's brother is trying out for the Washington state youth hockey team, and they actually test them to see if they know how to defend themselves in a fight.

Pure delusion. How many people have been seriously hurt in NBA fights? There are only like 2-3 a year anyway, but it's more of a problem than in the NHL?!?

NBA isn't that common either considering how many games are played.

Sports are sports and especially when there are people making contact, there will be incidents. Singling out the NBA as a bunch of thugs is bias especially when theres fighting going on in every other pro-sport.

Today I saw a video of a brawl between the Ducks and Calgary flames. While it was entertaining, nobody seemed to be shocked about it.

You're only saying things about basketball and ignoring other, more ruthless sports when it comes to fighting, and I think we can make only one conclusion as to why that is.

Surely Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki aren't thugs. What about Tim Duncan? Kobe? Shaq? Garnett? Lebron James? Yao Ming? Dwayne Wade? Jason Kidd? Wow, TOO many thugs for me...

Were you hinting that fighting is for some reason exhibited due to the player's race, or was it something else?

No, you brought the race card into it, not me. Thats what I bashed you about, sir.

Quoting SESGDL (Reply 31):

I never said that, I was anwsering this question you asked:

Quoting SESGDL (Reply 27):
What does a "gangsta" act like...

You asked me for ONE person, I came back with one person.

Quoting SESGDL (Reply 30):
You're only saying things about basketball and ignoring other, more ruthless sports when it comes to fighting, and I think we can make only one conclusion as to why that is.

If Im reading the thread title correctly, I believed that I was mainly taking about the NBA and only that. I wasnt the one that brought hockey or basball into the mix until somebody else did. Now look who's being ignorant, Mr. SESGDL.

People act as if race can't be used as a reason for things or actions, when in actuality it often is. In this case, I think it was completely warranted to mention that race may have something to do with people's reaction. I also wasn't the only or first person to bring race into the conclusion, but was the third. I guess we're all wrong...

It's ignorant to compare the NBA to the NHL and to compare the main difference between those who participate in the two? I disagree, I think race is a motivating factor in the way fights are regarded in the NBA, and I'm not the only one. I guess everyone who's come to this conclusion is "ignorant."

Lets agree to disagree. I was talking about the NBA, not even the NHL, MLB, NFL or any other sport for that matter. I could care less what went on in other sports.

The rules are the rules: you cannot start a fight. Thats not what basketball is about.

You brought it up, nobody else did. IMO, race has nothing to do with it. We are all human beings and so are the NBA players.

Absolutely. However, I wasn't the first to bring up race, see reply 13.

I'm no great fan of the NBA, but I just something today, the Warrior's Jackson was found in violation of his probation by discharging a fire arm outside of a strip club. Well at least he won't get the citizen of the year award.

Because the majority of the NBA players are from the 'hood, or lack therof. They act like "gangsta's". Its a no brainer.

There's a fact that so many in the politically correct crowd refuse to accept. When I was working the Chick-Fil-A LPGA tournament one year, before the golfers teed off, the caddies were chatting with each other. One caddy asked another what his wife did and he said she worked in marketing in the NBA. He also said the NBA has been having trouble the last few years, and cited that fact that so many of the players are "hoodlems" as being part of the reason.
The selfish attitude of so many of the players doesn't help matters either. There aren't NBA teams. There's 5 guys out there who happen to be wearing the same jersey. This attitude is the reason I much prefer college basketball, where I think the players play more as a team than they do in the NBA.

Quoting Mdsh00 (Reply 9):
Also, why do people seem to always criticize the NBA? The NHL has practically a minimum fight per game and nobody seems to make any outcry about that; in fact it's condoned.

As many others have cited, it's more accepted as part of the sport. It's also part of the culture. Also, in most NHL fights, only two players are involved. In most other sports, benches clear during a fight. In the NBA, the fight often times ends up in the stands, with spectators and fans getting injured in the fight, and that's a HUGE factor. That doesn't happen in hockey, or even other sports.
In hockey, two players fight, they go to the Penalty Box, serve their five minutes, and nothing else happens from it. The two players go back out on the ice and continue playing as if nothing happened. In other sports, two players fight, they have to be drug off the court or field because otherwise they'd continue fighting. You can see this in the post game interviews when it does happen in other sports.

NBA Draft Checklist

1. Declare for draft
2. Get an agent
3. Buy a handgun
4. Get a grill
5. Start a brawl

Often?? I think that's quite an overstatement. Part of the reason the Pistons-Pacers brawl was so condemned was that it went INTO the stands...which rarely ever happened before in the NBA.
