Your Single Favorite Song Of All Time

Wed Jan 24, 2007 4:53 am

No, I don't want a list of "songs that are up there". Put on your thinking cap for a few minutes, go over it in your mind, and tell us YOUR all-time favorite song. Don't be embarrassed if anyone else doesn't like it. To each their own.

I'll start. It's my favorite, and it's the best song, I think, that I've ever heard: "The Boxer", by Simon and Garfunkel.

Your turn.

"The Pretender" ... Jackson Browne. I purposely never listen to the song , then when I hear it by chance it's special. I can play the song on the piano , but I never do .. its better in my head. I like when I just think about playing it... but when I did it never felt just right.

Last month in Vegas me and my GF were listing to a jazz pianist play in a reastaruant.. I could not beleive that he started playing a jazzy muzak version of the song ... weird but special.

Damn, I hate trying to pick one song.

I'll say "One" by Metallica.

But really, there's a whole bunch I could put down as my favorite song.

Technically a Beatles song, although recorded during the White Album sessions, your mention of Harrison may be more accurate (certainly he wrote it). Clapton played the lead, and I suspect Ringo and McCartney (or was that Klaus Voorman, Don?  Wink ) played on it as well.

Man, no offense to you or anything, I just think its funny someone would pick that song as their faveorite! Simon and Garfunkel can sing, but the music in that song, but the instumental music in that song is, well  crazy   gnasher   hypnotized  sums it up pretty good I think.

Actually, I like the lyrics in that song. I just dont know why someone would pick the Simon and Garfunkel version when the Paul Simon version is so much better.

Cheers,
Kyle

I think the instrumentals-from the flute, through the background in the ending "lai-la-lai", and ending with the guitar solo, is what MAKES the song, along with great lyrics. It presents the story of a sad, tough life. It's just a teriffic song all around.

Because this is a "to each their own", and it wasn't meant to pick apart or laugh at what someone else likes, Speedie.  Yeah sure

Actually, there is a fourth verse, that wasn't in the original song that came out in 1970 on the album "Bridge Over Troubled Water", that they performed in their "Concert In Central Park" Album:

"Now the years roll slowly by
They are rockin' evenly
And I am older than I once was
And younger than I'll be, that's not unusual
Lord isn't strange
After change upon changes
We are more or less the same
After changes, we are more or less the same.."

Love that verse.

I agree. As it happens, I'm in the middle of a DID challenge from a friend. I'm down to 55 songs - out of my current library of over 1800. It's hard. So many to choose from.

Pressed for just one, it would have to be "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2. Ask me tomorrow, it might be "Angel from Montgomery" written by John Prine, performed by Bonnie Raitt.

Yep. The story I heard was that originally, when Harrison brought the song into the studio, no one else was really crazy about it. Then, he went and got Clapton to play the leads, and suddenly everyone was down with it.

Forget where I heard that though.

I can't, I simply can't name only one. Some of them you are already mentioned, like "Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel or "While My Guitar ....." By George Harrison. I could name at least ten of my favourite songs, but naming one is just too difficult.

Really tough to choose one, but "(White Man) in Hammersmith Palais" by The Clash is a safe pick.
