Pro Sports. Best All-Star Game?

Fri Jan 26, 2007 1:36 am

Yesterday, i watched some of the NHL all star game. What a waste of time. So much so i couldn't stand it and watched of all things, American Idol.  sarcastic

Who has the best All-Star game?

1. NBA
2. NHL
3. MLB
4. NFL

I'm no baseball fan but i do admit to watching the all star game on occasion. Also, the NBA has a good one as well.

Even though, to me, the NHL is the most exciting sport to watch, it's all-star game is a joke. A 12-9 game in the middle of the week on some obscure channel that 95% of US homes don't get.....

I'll take the MLB all-star game first, primarily because there's something riding on it.....namely home field advantage in the World Series.

The NFL Pro Bowl is nothing more than another commercial for Hawaii, and the NBA all-star game, including the ancillary so-called skills competition, is nothing more than a television forum for showing off.

To me that's ok because the way i see the regular season games, they're just showing off there as well.

I'm so out of touch. I didn't know that and i like the idea.

The NBA and the NHL's all-star games are complete jokes. The NFL's Pro Bowl might be the worst of all. I would give the nod to baseball's all-star game as being the best, but barely. 6 year ago, it was by far and away the best, but its fallen a bit lately. And just because homefield advantage rides on the outcome now, I think that hinders it more than helps it.

No, a subscription channel called Versus... and what's worse than the fact that the majority of the USA doesn't get the channel, apparently (I didn't watch it on Versus), the coverage was horrible.

OLN rebranded itself as Versus. Also, having the NHL all-star game in the middle of the week were T.V. viewers have a ton of other choices (basketball, NBA and college, first run TV shows etc). A game with no defense is not going to interest anyone, especially not on an unknown channel.

That was when it was held at Safeco in Seattle, right?

I can't stand the NBA, and the All Star Game is a total joke, I agree. It's anothe forum for them to show off, and that isn't even cool since they do it every night, anyway. The Pro Bowl is even worse. I think they have special blitzing rules set up, etc. It isn't even real football. Yeah, they tackle eachother...But it isn't much fun to watch. It's just a vacation for the players, which is all well and good. But if they want a vacation to Hawaii...How about they shell out some of the multi million dollar contracts they all ready have, and go out there for a week on their own, without having to "play a game" on Sunday?

The only real problem with the MLB All Star Game, is that it falls right around when the playoff races are starting to heat up. Meaning, pitchers are going to be less utilized. The skipper isn't going to want his staff ace throwing much, because they're in a playoff race, and can't afford to lose. I respect that, and it ties the hands of the All Star manager a little. Ah well, at least they made home field advantage for the World Series ride on it.

What I can't stand about the MLB, though, is that they changed the Home Run Derby format. It was great the way it used to be. Whoever hits the most, wins. Not, whoever hits the most from each country, gets to slug it out with other winners for a chance at winning. C'mon....

I think they only reason they made this change is to avoid that All-Star debacle a few years back when both managers ran out of pitchers, the score was tied, and the game was ended by the umps without a winner (kinda like soccer, huh 'ROC?  Wink ).

By far the MLB game is the best; I don't watch any of the others.

Same here. MLB All Star Game is the only one I watch as well. I think the players still play the hardest in that one (especially since it means something). The other All-Star games like hockey have all the unwritten rules and courtesies that you don't bodycheck, etc.
Though I wonder if the All-Star Game will continue to determine who gets Home Field in the World Series much longer. The American League has won everytime since they implemented this rule. Personally, I think it should go to A) the team with the better record of the two teams in there or B) the league who had the best record in Inter-League play during the regular season or C) back to the way it was....alternating. But that may be for a different thread.

It also simple to create a team in baseball. the sum of individuals=team, whereas the other sports require more teamwork and timing i.e. football a week for the QB and receivers to get on the same page, ditto for hockey, and basketball what a joke, nothing more than one on one.

Just out of curiosity KROC, did you actually watch the game? The game actually wasn't TOO bad, all things considered. I thought it had quite a bit of defense (relative to other NHL All-Star games of past  Wink ), and the pace wasn't too slow either. Sure, there were times when little-to-no effort was made to give chase, but I was surprised at the pace of the game, especially compared to the YoungStars game the night before. I had low expectations for the game, and it actually surprised me that they played at 3/4 speed as opposed to 1/2 speed or less.

Some players look okay in them, others look retarded. I can't say I prefer them over the old ones obviously, but they're not AS bad as I thought they would be.

Yes he was, but technically, I believe, only the umpires can render the decision to do such a thing on the field, so Bud made the call, told the umps, and they called the game. So, we're both right.  Wink

The best all star game is international soccer. The best from each nation team up against each other, and in the World Cup and Euros, the result actually matters!

I don't watch the HR derby every year, but last year it wasn't by country. It wasn't even by league. Just whoever had the highest totals kept advancing.

Yeah. I'm more down on the baseball version only because it was truly a fans game. Now they are trying to screw with it, and make it mean "something". Jut let the fans pick the starters, have a fun exibition game, then go back to the 2nd half of the season. BTW, I think best overall record should determine home field advantage if anything.

I watched it here and there, however rarely does a real hockey game have 21 goals scored. I wasn't seeing any defense when I had it on.
