BitTorrent Problem

Sun Jan 28, 2007 10:46 pm

I have just downloaded a TG episode, for the first time via BitTorrent (First time of using BitTorrent) and the file only took about 3 1/2 hrs to download, I have just opened it in WMP and it just plays the audio not the video, instead of the video it plays the weird pattern generator thingy.

What's wrong, or what am I doing wrong.

You are probably missing the necessary codec's on your computer.
For checking this file is not corrupted just burn it in a CD and stick it in the DVD player, they usually have most of the necessary codec's pre installed, certainly for movies or TV shows downloaded from the net.

if you downloaded it from the net it is probably in DivX format. Goto www.divx.com and download the codec.

And if all else fails, download VLC Media Player which will play virtually anything, straight out of the box without having to download add-ons, codec's etc.

All this trouble to download a television show? If 3.5 hours isn't long, then how long does it usually take?

Is this a legal download? How do you make sure you aren't downloading viruses or data miners?

Reason I'm asking is that I just now got an Ipod and was thumbing through Itunes and Audible.com, and was referred to a site that said they had thousands of television shows, but to be careful to avoid the dangers I mentioned earlier as well as make sure not to violate copyrights. Are these sites similar to Napster (pre-lawsuit)?

Do the copyright holders gain or permit this downloading?

Probably not. But in my opinion, he is British, thus (or he SHOULD anyway!) have a TV Licence, so I have absolutely no problems with downloading TV programs that were shown on the BBC. It's not like the adverts have been cut out. You have still paid in essence to watch it.

I've heard about that. I'm pretty sure that here in the US the same is not true since we don't pay any licensing for our television and there are warnings at the end of most show (verbals ones on sports programs).

Varies, also depends on how many people have the show downloaded, how fast uploading speed, etc etc.

I'm downloading a series (its unavailable in the US) which is 11 gigs, and so far its taken me 10 days to just download 42% of it.

OTOH, a episode I recently downloaded took no more than 40 minutes at 136 megs.

Then again, same size episode have taken me 3 days once too, so it all depends.

Most (at least half) downloads available on Bit torrent are not legal. Then, your chances of downloading a virus or anything else is high, its a risk/gamble.

For me, I download the series as its unavailable in the US, but once it becomes licensed, I stop my downloads and delete the rest of them. I then go out and buy the DVDs if I like it enough.
Every problem has a simple solution; finding the simple solution is the difficult problem.

I am downloading via Finalgear.com, so they are proper.

And the next question how the heck do I get them onto a DVD which will then play on a normal DVD player not a DivX one.

I use DVD Santa, though you could use something like Ulead DVD Workshop.

Do you pay for DVD Santa or is it freeware.

Pay for it. It's pretty good though for what it costs.

For sure there will be something out there that will do the job for free, but it's just finding it.

I don't think so, no body is selling anything. I do have to agree though that most of the DVD movies are illegal copies. The problem with p2p and bittorrent is that there are literally hundreds of millions of people around the world that use them, no government is going to stop that.

For most of your codec needs, I can recommend googling for CCCP (short for: Combined Community Codec Pack) which has all the major codecs as well as some unknown ones. The good thing about the CCCP is that the codecs have been redesigned so that they won't interfer with each other or cause slowdowns, something that can happen if you download loads of independent codecs.

As for the Beeb's view on torrents, they are pretty aggressive when it comes to chasing down clips that are available on places such as Youtube & Google Video. However, it would seem that they've chose to more or less ignore the torrents that are being hosted on Finalgear.

Finalgear host nothing. If you read their disclaimer they emphasize this quite strongly. Mininova do the actual hosting.
