Article On Iran And The Israel Lobby

Tue Jan 30, 2007 1:12 am

No conspiracy theories here, but the author does pose a relevant question.

Quote:
Is There A Kosher Way to Criticize the Israel Lobby?

By Matthew Yglesias, The American Prospect. Posted January 26, 2007.

Wes Clark is the latest to be caught up in the rigged rules for discussing Israel-related issues in America.

Thoughts?

I think that a valid point is raised. People need to realize that because one does not support Israeli policies does not mean that they are anti-semitic. John Mearsheimer wrote a comprehensive piece on the same topic: I'll see if I can dig it up.

Of course not, but when one says that he fears "New York money-men are bringing the US towards war with Iran," it no doubt has anti-semitic undertones, whether intentional or not.

John Mearsheimer basically blamed Jews for the war in Iraq, and just about all of the other ills the US currently faces, while repeating "I am not an anti-semite" ad nauseum...If you have to say that over and over, chances are there is some truth to it...His article was criticised by fellow academics, journalists, politicians, and most people who shape US policy as being outright wrong.

This statement is precisely what is being argued in the first article. Nowhere does Mearsheimer blame "Jews," he blames the Israel Lobby. There is a difference. The argument is that AIPAC, being the second most powerful lobby in Washington, influences American policy to support Israel.

Blaming AIPAC does not mean blaming Jews, just as blaming the NRA for a policy does not mean blaming every gun owner. The line is blurred, which is why such vociferous criticism arises, and the dreaded 'anti-semitic' label is applied.

Is it the same dude? And if so, why are you even quoting this guy?

"So Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons and missiles to deliver them. Under the circumstances, wouldn't you? Don't you think a little deterrence capability would serve the country well under those circumstances?"

(Is he justifying Iran having nukes or did I misread him?)

They're 2 separate articles. I saw the first one that I posted, my Matthew Yglesias, and it reminded me of the one by Walt and Mearsheimer that I read.

Ok, but that's not the article I cited in either of my posts, and is not by the same guy.
