what about the blues, for catharsis?

when you're really down, there's nothing like listening to some grizzled old bluesman retelling his woes to put your life in perspective...

i nominate r.l. burnside...  yes

especially 'wish i was in heaven sittin' down'... that stuff could make a grown man blubber.

Doesn't James Brown play mostly soul music?

In this case you could try Joe Jackson's "Body & Soul" or maybe "Summer in the City" for a chance, though the latter one is more Rock-oriented played by a Jazz combo.

I for one have a soft spot for Linda Perry right now (actually I have always liked her since the 4 Non Blondes). What a voice.
There are some "unplugged" vids on YouTube. Always nice to hear "Spaceman":

Wilson Pickett is one of my favorites. "Midnight Hour," "Land of 1,000 Dances," "Mustang Sally," "Hey Jude" and others. Gotta love 'em!
Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious" is great as well.
In the same vein, Sam & Dave with "Soul Man" and "Hold on, I'm Coming."
And then there are the Southern Rock greats: Doobie Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers. Neil Diamond's music also generally picks me up. The others are just random, stupid, happy songs  Smile

Rhythm and Blues can be very cheerful. Listen to the Blues Brothers Soundtrack "I am a Soul Man" or "Everybody needs Somebody to Love".....fits also very well to Aretha Franklin and James Brown.
What about Fleetwood Mac´s "Don'Stop" that always cheers me up when I hear it on the radio. Also Cream "White Room" is a good mood song.......Rolling Stones "Start Me Up",Beatles "Get Back" I could go on forever.......
