8 Hours Of Pre-Game? Gimmie A Break!

Mon Feb 05, 2007 4:25 am

This is my Super Bowl rant:

I love watching football. I love the Super Bowl. But my question is this: WHy on earth does ONE game require 8 hours of pre-game crap on TV???? I just don't understand... We spent an hour on Phil Sim's All Iron Team. While the stories of some of the players, and the community projects they've taken on is nice, and cool...An hour? Then there's the Pre-Pre-Game show...Where we chronicle the teams' journies from their team hotels to the stadium. Oh, and we had to devote time talking about the Colts changing hotels last night. Oh, then we need to interview guys and ask them how they slept last night like we would a child on Christmas Morning...."Jimmy! Jimmy! How'd you sleep last night knowing Santa was coming to town??? Were you excited, Jimmy???"

Why can't we just do a 2 hour pre-game show 2 hours before kick-off, and stop wasting so much damn time on useless crap???

Good question. The TV here is going on at 6pm, and not one minute before.

Just tune in an hour or two before game time. Simple. There are other channels.

I'm watching 8 hours of pre-game. The local PBS station is showing nonstop Red Green episodes all day.  cloudnine

S12, they make this little gizmo called a REMOTE CONTROL so you can change the channel . . . you don't have to watch 8 hours of pregame. You don't even have to watch 1 minute of pregame.

Of course, failing the possession of a remote, you might have to actually walk over to the television and push a button . . . .

You guys are missing the point, intentionally I believe. He is not saying that he is forced to watch it. He is questioning why they have it. 8 hours is pointless, and you all know it. So why not contribute and discuss it rather than make him look like an idiot? Come on now.

I agree 8 hours is way over the top. I am doubtful anyone would sit around and watch the game after all that. That would require 11 hours or so of TV watching, and yeah, not many people are suited for that.

Even the most basic cable packages have like 163 channels. If you can't find something to watch, it's your fault. Or, you could get your lazy ass off the couch and do something productive.

Actually,
8 hours is not pointless. It's quite obvious that CBS (FOX and ABC included), put on the 8 hours of pregame because it makes them a ton of freakin money to be able to pay the NFL to broadcast the game! All those commercials add up to lots and lots of bucks.
And another thing, if people didn't watch it, they wouldn't be able to sell ads for it, now would they? So if S12 doesn't like it, it's his choice, but plenty of others ARE watching it.
AND besides that, what exactly would you rather be watching on the first Sunday in February? Thug Ball (NBA)? Hockey (Meaning the horrible Flyers or maybe the slipping Red Wings like are always on NBC)? X-Games? Texas-Hold'em Poker with washed up Hollywood types? NBC's presentation of the Detroit Car Show? I mean really, come on, there ISN'T anything else on so today you get 8 hours of Pre-Game.

Someone must be... and besides that, I know it's not allowed, but if it was, how many people would be tailgating outside the stadium from 10AM to game time, watch the game, and then go back and tailgate afterwards? Plenty.. I'm sure.. to some, 11 hours of Football is like sitting here on A.net for a day posting stuff...

It wouldn't be such an issue if he wasn't a chronic bitcher.

That said I am sure CBS figured out they could generate more revenue by running an 8-hour long pre-pre-pre game show, than having 4 hours of infomercials, maybe a golf game, then maybe a 2 hour pre-game show. So in the end it doesn't much matter what the OP thinks,

I understand where you are coming from when it comes to CBS wanting to make money off ads, it does make sense. But, I will be surprised if they get the ratings they are expecting. Most people will be out getting ready for the parties and what not. Most people don't really tune in at least 2 hours or so before the game, from my experiences.

Thug Ball (NBA)

You obviously don't know much about the sport then. NBA players are just like NFL players. Furthermore, care to compare the amount of actual fights/brawls with that of other sports hockey or soccer for example?

I agree with S12 that 8 hours definitely is ridiculous, and I cant think of a single circumstance in which I would want to watch that much pre-game coverage...but, as others have said, just watch something else...right now Im watching FSU-Duke basketball, for instance, and when game time comes, thats when I will switch over to CBS...

Haven't a clue to be honest. There's one poster already who says it's just fine. I turn on the TV a minute before the game, and a minute after it's over, myself, mainly to watch the commercials. I just never watch the pregame, so I don't know what's appropriate.

Isn't that twice as long as the game?  bored  Enough other stuff to do with my time, then watch a highlight show later and you got the whole game in about 3 minutes.

Could be worse. Ever since the Bears won the NFC Championship, the local news stations have some story practically every night on Brian Urlacher. They have just about interviewed the entire town of Lovington, NM (where he when to high school) by now. Today is even Brian Urlacher Day in New Mexico. Granted, he may be a good football player, but this is just ridiculous.

Maybe CBS intends the pre-game bullshit to be used as background noise in bars and at private parties. I can't imagine anyone listening to those blowhard washed-up former athletes as they spew their useless monotone commentary for eight hours straight.

I guess any of you didn't see ESPN of the NFL Network during the past week then? Every time I went by one of those channels, it was Super Bowl stuff. I can't understand why anyone would watch that. They just repeat things over and over to fill time. That's why I went by and kept going. All I care about is the game, not some ex-player's predictions.

And 75% of it was about black head coaches. I don't know how many times the following line was repeated:

"It shouldn't be an issue, but these are the first black head coaches to lead their teams to the Super Bowl, good friends Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith." [cut to shot of them hugging]

Followed by four white commentators talking about how great it is.

And to add to that, now Doug Williams is blowing up because he was the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

So much for it "not being an issue".

Well, Westy....Just to clue you in...The Super Bowl is the only game that has an 8 hour devotion the day of the game on TV. No other sport has 8 hours to discuss the game. None.

And it's still over the top. What did we have today? From my memory:

The season in review. Followed by-
The Super Bowl Today. Followed by-
More Super Bowl today... Followed by-
The Super Bowl pre-game show. Followed by-
The Super Bowl Kick Off Show.

Finally they fit in the actual game. The teams were so worried about the length of the pre-game festivities, and half time, that they worked a meal into half time to ensure they players had enough carbs in them for the game. That shouldn't have to happen. This has become an event, more than a game. We've forgotten that there is an actual game to be played for the championshiop, and focussed more on entertaining people. I want to watch the damn game, NOT Prince strut around on stage singing songs that aren't even HIS!

By the way, I just opened your profile and got this really loud/high pitched beeping. Just curious as to what that was?

Because after the first hour of the 8 hour pregame I was pretty wasted and didn't care what I was watching. I don't know exactly what I watched, but I watched it. So there is a market for it.
