I thought conservatives believed in self independence and self perseverance? I also thought they believed in small government, with the right to self determination... and to live life free of interference for government or other people?

At least... that's what I believe myself... and I always thought I was a conservative.  Confused

So why do some of my fellow conservatives believe they have the moral superiority to dictate how other people should live their lives?

If two men want to get a civil-union, what harm does it do to you?

And if two women want to put one another on a single healthcare policy, what allows a person the right to interfere in their lives?

I just don't get it. Let them have health insurance, let them have the right to live life free of interference from the government... or from your ideas of how they should live.

Your men have to follow your orders. They don't have to go to your funeral.

Thank you UH60, that's the key of this whole issue: what harm does it do to you?. I really don't understand why some people feel threatened by civil unions, as if it changed their lives directly.

It's not that everyone must become a homosexual and that straight families are banned... just crazy.

UH60, well said. You're a real stand-up guy. Hat's off to you. Stay safe out there!

Exactly -- this is why I said in Pt. 1 that I have a problem calling myself a Republican anymore. At least according to the politics test on my MySpace profile turns out I'm a Libertarian.

There are ways in which current Republican government is starting to make the Dems look downright conservative by comparison -- the PATRIOT act being one of the best examples at the federal level.

As long as my decisions aren't directly and measurably harming another citizen, why should the government meddle?

As a former President once said, one of the scarriest things you'll ever hear is "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

But that is just my opinion, of course.

Let's focus, people.

Again, this is not about "who you f***" because straight unmarried couples are not getting coverage under partner benefits. Gay, straight, bi -- you're not getting benefits unless you are married. Unless you work for a place that allows "domestic partner benefits" in which case gays get them too.

Now, if you want to argue for gay marriage, that's another story.

Actually you are more of a Libertarian for thinking that way.

Conservatives - less government interference fiscally, however more government interference for social/moral issues

Liberals - more government interference fiscally, less government morally

Libertarians - Less Government fiscally, less government for moral issues

Statist (Which Dubya actually is) - More government fiscally, more government for social.

The Conservatives have always been for getting the government involved in moral/social issues such as banning abortion, stopping gay rights, bringing back prayer in schools. Have little government for fiscal issues, but have it in private lives. For example - cutting welfare, and banning gay rights.

Libertarians - Want little government interference both fiscally and privately. An extremist libertarian is an anarchist. You can have libertarians in both the democrat and republican parties. Libertarians would be for cutting welfare, allowing Howard Stern to say what he wants on the radio without fines, allowing people to keep their guns and not have to register them, allowing gay rights, no national I.d. cards. Less taxes and less spending.

Statist - Which many Neoconservatives like Bush and Cheney are. They are for big spending and government across the board. Hitler was an extreme statist leaning right, Mussolini was an extreme statist leaning left. (on a spectrum Liberals are left, Republicans are right, libertarians are up, and statists are down). Bush has created big government while in office, while also trying to get the government in personal lives - wire tapping, trying to ban gay rights etc, National I.D. cards, first amendment abuses etc.

Liberals- Big government fiscally - keep welfare and other programs. Pro Choice, pro gay rights etc... of course you knew that one.

If you aren't sure what you are, take the worlds shortest political quiz.

Any opposition to the platform you describe above is indefensible. Just another shining example of what a fantastic representative you are for all who call our America home.

The sad thing is that any of that needs to be said at all.

I would also like to point out that marriage is not a guaranteed lifestyle for straight people, either. You have to have someone want to marry you before you can actually get married and get the marriage benefits.

My point is that a lot of straight people who are in long term relationships (until recently, me included) have not had the ability to get partner benefits, even if they wanted to get married because their partner didn't want to get married.

Gee, really? Boy, that gets to the bottom of THAT one! I mean, what a revalation, that you have to get MARRIED to get MARRIAGE benefits!

Boy, I'm glad you cleared up that one!  Big grin
