Do You Know Your Country National Anthem By Heart?

Wed Feb 07, 2007 4:11 am

hi folks,
I wanted to make a survey with my fellow a.netter's.
Do you know your country's national anthem by heart?

For what concernes Costa Rica, I know it by heart, but for Switzerland I only know the first passage (here in Switz, if people know the anthem they just know the first part).

Regards

I do... something rather rare in Belgium... I also know the Flemish anthem by heart, although I totally don't support the idea of a Flemish state...

I know the first verse by heart, but not the others (which are very rarely sung in the U.S.)

Actually, the rest is so rare that I'd bet out of any random 100 Americans, 50 wouldn't even know there is more than one verse  duck

I knew 3 the US, the Canadian and The Barbadian. Having been born in BGI, served in the US Navy and lived in Canada for the last 30 years. I learnt them all, only trouble is before you start singing you have to remember where you are, otherwise you will come out with the wrong one

I learnt to sing the Swiss Anthem by hard thanks to the World Cup  bigthumbsup

I also used to know the Mexican one from the days I used to live there. We had to sing the Mexican Anthem EVERY Monday morning.

For my country I know both "Oh Canada" (English and French) and "God Save the Queen". I also know the US national anthem, mostly because it is sung so frequently at hockey games.
No matter how random things may appear, there's always a plan.

I learned all three verses of the Star Spangled Banner in elementary school. It was a required rite of passage in the 1960's. I also learned the national anthems of Canada, Great Britain, and Isreal.

I doubt kids even learn the Pledge of Allegiance in today's schools.

Hmm... I think I do. Of course, only the third verse is (rarely) sung as the others gained a bit of a controversial meaning after 1933. But with Germany's unusual take on national pride, the anthem really isn't very popular even though it does sound good and sort of different, e.g. less pompous than many others.

Oh, and the EU anthem is instrumental! Big grin

In Latin America and the US (not sure bout Canada, kids learn their national anthem in school and sing with their hands on their heart!
If you are in Switerland, know your anthem by heart and sing with your hand on your heart, you will most likely be seen as a far rightist !

I find the melody of the Swiss national anthem very slow and boring. If you listen to many Latin american national Anthems, they are faster ,more lively and thus more interesting

I had a CD full of national anthems so I know how many of them go. I like listening and recognising them. Once I met a greek guy, and sang him the melody of the Greek anthem, and he was very happy !

EDIT: Did you know that before, the Swiss anthem was based on the same melody as god save the queen ?

The National Anthem is something which isn't taught in Swiss schools (as you know), but IMHO it should be.

BTW: Have any of the German members ever heard the fourth verse of our National Anthem? It's not part of the original lyrics from August Hoffmann von Fallersleben though, because it was created just after WWI.

Nur im Unglück kann die Liebe zeigen, ob sie stark und echt.
Und so soll es weiterklingen von Geschlechte zu Geschlecht:

Of course I know both verses of my National Anthem. It´s not something many people brag about here, sometimes one is almost obliged to apologize for knowing the entire National Anthem. You see, there is a widespread, mainly leftist, belief in Swedish society, that anyone who sings the National Anthem except in connection with sports events, is an Extreme Nationalist and a Racist, possibly a Militarist.

Well, there was another song which was also used as national anthem - "Die Wacht am Rhein". "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" was a kind of the royal anthem.

I remember a few years ago being at a summer concert in the park in the Domain in AKL - at the end of the concert they played the national anthem and had the words up on a screen karaoke style with a little ball bouncing along the words so that the majority of us who had no idea of the words could manage . I felt very comforted by this as I have always found extremes of nationalism very cringeworthy ( and more than a little frightening ) . No banners and flags or national anthems for me Big grin

Yes, all of it.

Interestingly, while visiting my daughter's choir practice last week in Iowa, I was surprised the Choir Director started the class with the US National Anthem. She made mention to me later she does that because as she put it "I'm disgusted that so many people in this country don't know the words to the song"  bigthumbsup  for her.

Well here in the Madera and parts of Fresno area they do not recite it any longer. My class stopped doing it after the 3rd grade. There were quite a few Jehovah Witnesses in the classes and soon teachers decided not to do it anymore because so many students were upset that they were not showing respect to our country. Fair argument but it is against their faith to do so. So I have not heard this in quite some time. I remember even that my Great Uncle (who served in World War 2) used to come in every friday to salute the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance with us in his old uniform. Once a month he would also hand out small flags to us on sticks on the last friday and always gave us a little history about our country from Kidnergarden threw 6th grade. Myself and all my friends were extremely grateful for that.

RE: Do You Know Your Country National Anthem By Heart?

Wed Feb 07, 2007 5:47 pm

Quoting Braybuddy (Reply 29):
No. Like 95% of Irish people, I only know the first line of Amhrna bhFiann. Nice tune though.

Unfortunately Braybuddy is right and I'm also part of that 95% figure he gives! Funny though I was only thinking over the weekend that I must learn it, so I went onto the internet to get the lyrics along with their English translation (so I could also understand it). I also agree that it's a nice tune.

For those of you who are rugby fans you're probably aware that at Irish rugby matches we have another anthem, "Ireland's Call". The reason for this is that in rugby the Irish team comprises both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. For matches in Ireland both our official anthem and Ireland's Call are played, while at international matches played abroad, they only play Ireland's Call. This anthem was commissioned by the IRFU (Irish Rugby Football Union) for the above reason and to represent both countries.

In case any of you are interested (probably not), here's the Irish national anthem with the English translation below:

Amhrán na bhFiann

Seo dhibh a cháirde duan Óglaigh,
Cathréimeach briomhar ceolmhar,
Ár dtinte cnámh go buacach táid,
'S an spéir go min réaltogach
Is fonnmhar faobhrach sinn chun gleo
'S go tiúnmhar glé roimh thíocht do'n ló
Fé chiúnas chaomh na hoiche ar seol:
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Curfá:
Sinne Fianna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,
buion dár slua
Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
Fé mhóid bheith saor.
Sean tír ár sinsir feasta
Ní fhagfar fé'n tiorán ná fé'n tráil
Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil
Le guna screach fé lámhach na bpiléar
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Cois bánta réidhe, ar árdaibh sléibhe,
Ba bhuachach ár sinsir romhainn,
Ag lámhach go tréan fé'n sár-bhrat séin
Tá thuas sa ghaoith go seolta
Ba dhúchas riamh d'ár gcine cháidh
Gan iompáil siar ó imirt áir,
'S ag siúl mar iad i gcoinne námhad
Seo libh, canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Curfá

A bhuíon nách fann d'fhuil Ghaeil is Gall,
Sin breacadh lae na saoirse,
Ta scéimhle 's scanradh i gcroíthe namhad,
Roimh ranna laochra ár dtire.
Ár dtinte is tréith gan spréach anois,
Sin luisne ghlé san spéir anoir,
'S an bíobha i raon na bpiléar agaibh:
Seo libh, canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Curfá

TRANSLATION:

The Soldier’s Song

We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus:
Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
The long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Inisfail
Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
So chant a soldier's song.

Chorus

AND THE LYRICS OF IRELAND'S CALL:

Come the day and come the hour
Come the power and the glory
We have come to answer
Our Country's call
From the four proud provinces of Ireland
Chorus

Ireland, Ireland,
Together standing tall
Shoulder to shoulder
We'll answer Ireland's call
2

From the mighty Glens of Antrim
From the rugged hills of Galway
From the walls of Limerick
And Dublin Bay
From the four proud provinces of Ireland
(Chorus)
3

Hearts of steel
And heads unbowing
Vowing never to be broken
We will fight, until
We can fight no more
For the four proud provinces of Ireland
(Chorus)
Long live Aer Lingus!
