The Official Congrats Michael Irvin Thread

Wed Feb 07, 2007 10:26 am

It's about time the Playmaker got in to the NFL HOF. You can bag on his life outside of football all you want, but his results on the field spoke for them self:
750 Receptions
11,904 Receiving Yards
65 Touchdowns
47 Career 100 Receiving Yard Games
(11 100 Yard games in a row, NFL Record)
87 Postseason Receptions
6 100 Receiving Yard Postseason Games
3 Super Bowl titles (Dallas)
1 MNC (University of Miami)
1st Round Draft Pick

He was a Hall of Fame WR. Best of the 1990s.

Good job Michael...you deserve it!

Sort of off topic but I read a Sports Illustrated article in the early '90's that said Irvin still poured water over his Corn Flakes. An old habit since childhood when his family couldn't afford milk.
You're only as good as your last departure.

Best of the 1990s

Copa...while I don't discredit his achievements, he was not the best of the 1990s. Jerry Rice, anyone?

I think Michael got in with his ties to Miami, what with the Super Bowl being played there this year. Timing was right.

I was a bit shocked, though, that two players didn't get in. Ray Guy deserves to be in the HOF being the best at his position, ever, and didn't make it past the first round of voting last week? And Art Monk. Mr. Consistency for well over a decade. Set many records himself during his playing days and could always be counted on. That he continues to be overlooked is a shame.

This year's class that the folks were voting on (17 people, 6 chosen-the max) was very talented. Guys like Gary Zimmerman, Richard Dent, Paul Tagliabue, Andre Reed, will all likely get in like Irvin, but that Roger Wehrli of the mediocre St. Louis Cardinals got in over them shows how deep this group was.

Monk and Guy not being in is a travesty. Dent needs to be in as well.
Maybe my bias to the Playmaker is that he is a U of M guy. a true Hurricane.

If his life off the field has ANYTHING to do with his entry, he would be denied. He was no role model, and he still isn't. He is a lousy commentator, his playing days were above average, but not Hall worthy.

Who is hall worthy if Mike Irvin isn't then?

Agreed. He was good, but like you say, not HOF material in my book.

I actually think he is better than some of the other mouth-pieces on the tube every Sunday morning.

So without a doubt by these rules since character doesn't count, Barry Bonds and the others like him (Iverson in basketball) deserves a automatic pass into their respective HOF's.

Just played in the right system at the right time. I thought that there were several WR's (Rice, Brown) that were better during that period and they were never arrested.

Irvin was a great player. He benefitted from being part of that monster Cowboy's offense and while I believe he probably should be in the HOF, I think his outgoing personality is what sealed the deal for him in the long run. Ordinarily someone with all his off the field problems (that still pop up now and then) would have kept other players out, but becuase he is loud, bold, on T.V. and fairly media accesible/friendly, it helped him out considerably.

Who is Hall worhty? A ton of guys! Troy aikmen is worthy, Walter Peyton was worthy, Dick Butkis, emmitt smith is worthy, Terry Bradshaw, a ton of people. They dont get caught in papers for doing drugs, they arent ghetto huggers, they're so many people that conduct themselves in a professional manner, they are instant role models.

Barry would never see the hall for his dance with the steroid needle. Iverson? He is a thug, but isnt a lime light off the field guy.
